I've been vegetarian for 17 years and entirely plant-based (vegan) off and on for about 5 years. I'm used to working with plant-based recipes that are boring or use unusual and hard to find ingredients, or rely on fake meat for flavor and texture. I thought a "healing foods" cookbook would be different. Uh, not this one. Almost every single recipe (except some of the desserts and smoothies) call for several tablespoons of oil, and some call for 1 full cup of olive oil for a 2 serving recipe. Seriously? Yes, fat is important. But 100g of fat from olive oil in one serving is rather excessive. On top of that, too many of these recipes require unusual ingredients. I don't have time to go to 4 different grocery stores for one week's menu. Some of the items you'll need: arame, hazelnut oil, alaria, hijiki, wasabi powder, agar-agar, gomasio, umeboshi plum paste, pomegranate powder, yacon syrup, exotic superfood young thai coconut meat (that's exactly what it calls for), maqui powder, date paste -- there's more. And if you're not already vegetarian, there will probably be even more items that are unfamiliar. You'll also need easier to find but expensive things like macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, and saffron. Many of the recipes also call for fake dairy or meat such as non-dairy parmesan and ricotta (it does not include recipes for those) and tempeh bacon. Not only are these expensive but fake cheese is gross and tempeh bacon is only marginally better. Food doesn't need these things to be delicious. As for positives -- The pictures are beautiful and the font is quite pleasing.

Don't buy this is you are expecting something you can feed to kids to be in this book. Don't buy this book if you don't have time to go to 4 different grocery stores to make one meal. Don't buy this is you are looking for something low fat. Don't buy this if you are expecting accessible food. Don't buy this if you don't want to shop at WholeFoods. Don't buy this if you don't have time to research substitutes for exotic ingredients. Don't buy this if you don't want to research how to prepare exotic fruits and veggies.

Good source of information. Recipes are not for beginners, they are complicated, and picture does not match instructions, but I am a vegetarian and always looking for inviting dishes to make and enjoy. I rate this 3 stars.

I have now made 10 of these dishes, soups and salads and loved 9 of them. The recipes are very creative and most of the ingredients needed can be easily found. I have discovered some new foods that I really enjoy that I had never tried before because I didn't know how to cook with them. There is a picture of every finished recipe in the book.

Gary Null has always been an inspiration to me for his research and knowledge in the nutritional field. This book is a guide to help one on the path to wellness. I take it seriously to stay on that path.

Almost all of the recipes in this cookbook are excellent. They all might be but some of them are not to our taste. However, if you like to cook and want to serve delicious and healthy food, you will want to try many of the recipes.

Great, tasty and healthful recipes. Most pleased because good for single households!

good recipes and some very useful information.

From Booklist

Fly Guy and his owner, Buzz, are back! This time they’re on a field trip to the aquarium. With a bit of trepidation (which he loses along the way), Fly Guy agrees to tour the shark exhibit with Buzz acting as guide. Mixing photos of fish tanks with notebook-lined journal pages, taped pictures, and handwritten notes about the predators, Buzz introduces readers to a sampling of the more than 400 kinds of sharks. Readers will learn interesting facts about the skeleton, teeth, skin, food, speed, and life cycle. An added plus for young readers is that when unfamiliar words appear, Arnold supplies an in-text pronunciation inside of parentheses. Near the end, it appears there are more facts to tell than pages on which to tell them. As a result, some facts and photos seem crowded. Slick paper and good photos add to the considerable appeal of the package. Preschool-Grade 2. --J. B. Petty

I just have to say that for the 3 star reviews on here - those people seem to not understand what they were buying. This book is presented as a nonfiction text, with "straightforward facts" about sharks, photographs, and is published by Scholastic REFERENCE. It was never intended to be a "usual Fly Guy Book". It is part of a new series supposed to help bridge kids from fiction to nonfiction texts by using a familiar fictional character to "host" the facts.I think that this series will be excellent for children who love Fly Guy to expand their interests into informational books which are important to read. After all, informational texts are what kids need to be able to comprehend more and more the older they get. (How many fiction books were required reading in college?) This book does exactly what it is intended to do - entices children to read nonfiction by putting a popular fictional character on the cover.

I began reading the Fly Guy series to my boys. After they were done with the books I took them to school to share with my students who love them as much as my family did. Thanks to book fairs I've collected the whole series. I was happy when Fly Guy introduced an informational book. They're great starting points for my students who have difficulty with longer text or identifying important facts. These books are great and continue to be the most borrowed books in my library. Sharks is a welcome addition that may soon need replacing because so many have read it since I brought it to school in May!We're looking forward to the next installments.

My youngest (five) is an avid Fly Guy fan and she took to his introduction to sharks like, well, you know. In typically engaging fashion, and with an early reader vocabulary, Arnold and Fly Guy provide a whirlwind tour of sharks and their environs in a perfect K and pre-K chunk. Mixing Fly Guy into photographs, FG is a charming and humorous tour guide. My daughter learned some things while not being overwhelmed with too many things. It looks like this is the first of a series of science-themed FG adventures and if so, we eagerly await the next one while applauding (and rereading) this one.

Love this book! Great educational for my son. He loves fly guy!easy to read!

My son is in 1st grade and loves these books. He has struggled with wanting to read so finding these books was amazing. He reads them to his little sister or on his own or to me. The pictures are so bright and fun and the reading is fun too.

My son who is seven, and I read this several times. He liked the end of the book. The quick facts are intriguing and make you want to learn more. Thank you fly guy!! From Charles

My son's teacher recommended these for practice reading and site words! He loves these books! Will definitely be ordering the whole series

Great mix of fiction & non-fiction. Interesting facts & neat pictures capture the reader’s attention & the Fly Guy fictional aspect makes it a little easier to comprehend. My son loves these!

To be fair I only got to read a lengthy sample, but I did enjoy it.I would suggest to the author that the book needs a good proof reading. I have experience doing that and will proof your book for 50 cents per page, plus the cost of the book, preferably in PDF format. I found numerous typos, sometimes multiple errors on the same page, which as a former newspaper proof reader, makes my brain stop mid-sentence as I search for my red pencil. No offense intended, but in places, I wondered if you dictated the text into Dragon Speaking Naturally, due to the quantity of errors I noticed, both spelling and grammatical.

Nice, but not really detailed

The Very Worst Missionary: A Memoir or Whatever, by Jamie Wright

Review

“Jamie is the only Christian writer I know who doesn’t filter her thoughts and words through an ‘appropriateness meter,’ so her memoir is original, hilarious, and believable. Jamie shows that a woman can be full of contradictions, full of fire, and full of faith—all at same time. If you find yourself losing your religion, read this brilliant book before you bail. It’s possible to be thinking, honest, inclusive, relevant, compelling, compassionate and Christian—Jamie’s proof.” –Glennon Doyle, author of the #1 NYT Bestseller Love Warrior; founder of Together Rising   “This book doesn’t suck—at all. In fact, it’s one of the smartest, funniest, and truest books on faith I’ve ever read. The Very Worst Missionary will draw you in and keep you thinking. It will remind you that, even when you think you’re at your worst, you’re not alone.” –Rachel Held Evans, New York Times bestselling author of A Year of Biblical Womanhood and Searching for Sunday   "This book might make you clutch your pearls, or laugh out loud, or angry. It might break your heart. Maybe all of the above. But at least you won't remain unmoved by Jamie's profound, wise and funny-as-hell story. Jamie's love for the church is ferocious and refining, and we desperately need to read and heed this book." –Sarah Bessey, author of Jesus Feminist and Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith  "Wright, founder of the Jamie the Very Worst Missionary blog, exposes her disenchantment with missionary work in this irreverent, fast-paced memoir."-Publishers Weekly “Think of The Very Worst Missionary as the literary lovechild of Mother Theresa and Sarah Silverman—a crass-and-light-filled narrative that will have you laughing one minute and looking in the mirror the next. We need this book in the very worst way."  –Matthew Paul Turner, author of Churched and When God Made You   "If you’ve lived and worked abroad, I predict you will nod your head in recognition as Jamie takes on the sacred cows of Christian missions with honesty, humor, and not a religious platitude in sight. Her transparency and courage is exactly what we need." –Tara Livesay, director of Heartline Ministries, Haiti    "Jamie had me howling with laughter and cringing with recognition at her earnest and yet misguided endeavor to save the world. Equal parts memoir and scathing but self-deprecating critique, Very Worst Missionary shows how even our best intentions can go awry, and how we can find our way again." –Kristen Howerton, author of Rage Against the Minivan   “Jamie Wright will have you doubled over in laughter one minute, wiping tears the next. Rip-roaringly funny, brutally honest, and so very endearing…an absolute joy to read from first page to last.” –Nish Weiseth, author of Speak: How Your Story Can Change the World    “We’ve traveled with Jamie into red-light districts in Asia, where we’ve seen how she’s been able to use her voice to advocate for the most vulnerable. In The Very Worst Missionary, she hosts a conversation that globally minded people of faith absolutely need.” –Matt and Laura Parker, founders of The Exodus Road   "Gritty, funny, and thoughtful…all the things faith should be but rarely is. I love Jamie's story, her voice, and the way she looks at the world. After you read this, I'm confident you will, too."  –Jeff Goins, author of The Art of Work   "Jamie writes with eloquence, humility, and snark (no doubt a spiritual gifting). Everyone should read this brave book." –Emily Worrall, co-creator of Barbie Savior    “Never before have I seen a fellow Christian write with such courage, authenticity, and balance. You will come away feeling that your hurts and frustrations have been validated, and motivated to love bigger." –Benjamin L. Corey, author of Unafraid: Moving Beyond Fear-Based Faith    “Jamie brings the wit of Joan Rivers, the pen of Mary Carr, and the spirit of a prophet. This is one of those rare religious books that makes you feel okay with who you are, while inspiring you to want to be better." –Caleb Wilde, author of Confessions of a Funeral Director   “Jamie gives us permission to admit just how screwed up we really are, and accept how much God loves us anyway. One of the best, most refreshing books I’ve read in a very long time. I cannot recommend it highly enough.” –Zack Hunt, writer, blogger, preacher

This was a tough read. Ex-missionary Jamie Wright recounts her five-year experience as an evangelical missionary in Costa Rica to lay bare the nebulous language, lack of accountability, and harm missionaries can wreak upon native cultures - especially if they're unprepared. However, The Very Worst Missionary is not a point-by-point takedown of the modern missions movement - as the byline states, it's a memoir - and Wright makes it very clear throughout the book that she's only speaking from her personal experience and the experiences of those who have confided in her. (If you're interested in more material like this, I strongly recommended the podcast Failed Missionary - of which Wright is a co-host). The first half of the book documents Wright's rollercoaster testimony (that is amazing in and of itself) before it culminates in her and her husband's decision to move to Costa Rica to become missionaries. The Very Worst Missionary should be a wake-up call to the church. Wright freely admits she was not prepared or equipped to move abroad in order to engage in cross-cultural ministry, and that's part of the larger problem Wright is trying to reveal. Throughout the course of the book, Wright gives examples of wasted resources, hypocritical operations, and the utter lack of any real impact.Obviously, Wright is tackling some very sacred cows of American evangelicism, and she points a critical finger at an industry that insulates itself from harsh scrutiny and honest evaluation through the use of vague language like "loving on people," "just showing up," "making disciples," and "hearing from God."Wright isn't arguing for the dissolution of evangelical missions - though she definitely thinks they're in urgent need of reform. She's an advocate for smarter missions. From her perspective, if you're a Christian and passionate about the international community, then move somewhere as an expat, get a real job, and invest in the lives of your new neighbors. Don't plant a church if there's already a local church to partner with. And, for the love of God, don't let "short-term missions" destroy local economies by offering free goods and services that steal jobs from locals. As other reviewers have noted, the use of strong profanity in this book will turn off a lot of people (and, unfortunately, probably the people who need to hear this message the most). I've shared this book with some of my missionary friends, and they agree with a lot of what Wright has to say and acknowledge that a lot of work needs to be done within missions organizations. I'm not a prude, but I'm looking forward to a book that can tackle this problem from a scholarly and data-driven perspective without having to drop so many f-bombs.

The message is worth considering and evaluating, however for those of us who struggle with not letting any unwholesome talk come from our mouths, this book will do you no favors. I’m truly not against well-placed profanity to make a strong point, but I felt she used swear words almost ridiculously to where I couldn’t take her seriously anymore-like when my teenager is just trying to shock me. It came off as immature. It’s too bad because this is a good conversation to have, but I can’t recommend this book to most people. And the very people that I’m guessing the author wants to get this message to are the ones who won’t read it, so it becomes more of a preaching to the choir book rather than one that will start real reform. I hope I’m wrong.

Jamie Wright, the self-described Very Worst Missionary, is the very best human being for asking all the right questions about the Christian missionary endeavor as we know it today. How carefully do we select our participants? How effective is their work? How do we even measure that effectiveness? Are short-term mission projects more harmful than helpful? Her family's experience on the mission field in Costa Rica helped her gain a unique perspective from which to begin asking these extremely hard but undeniably important questions. But that's not even the best thing about this book. While there may be other authors who are tackling these issues in print, including academics and missiologists, Jamie adds the priceless commodities of genuine compassion, complete transparency, hilarious wit, and spectacular levels of profanity. She writes with the humor and timing (& vocabulary) of a seasoned stand-up comic, and includes several laugh-out-loud moments in her surprisingly touching and encouraging life story (not LOL; genuine bursts of audible and uncontrollable mirth).I devoured this title, closed the book, and in the same motion handed it to a friend to read. My friend is a young woman who is traveling to Kenya this summer for a short-term mission project. This is her second trip to this location with this agency, and I helped her edit her "support letter" last week. I'm a short-term mission field veteran myself and I literally cannot wait for her to read it so we can have a conversation about the many intriguing points Jamie makes in this fantastic and incredibly important book.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK! It is the most real and honest and authentic telling of a story ever. It cuts straight to the heart and speaks to the raw humanity in us all. No matter what walk of life you come from, you can glean wisdom from it and find hope in it. Wisdom to help you navigate your faith in a broken church culture. Hope in knowing you are not alone in the brokenness that is life. Jamie challenges deeply rooted, yet unfounded beliefs that have become standard theology among those that call themselves evangical Christians. Her words compel you to take an honest look at the things you believe regarding church, missions, and what it means to be a follower of Jesus. She let’s us see that it’s ok to ask questions and it’s ok to not have an answer. For those of you worried about some swear words, that’s just silly given the truth and wisdom that seep from the pages of this book.

Pros:-Pictures!!-Easy to understand.-Knowledge of direction of movement, what parts of the body the massage giver should use (finger tips, palm of hand, knuckles, etc), pressure amounts, as well as start/finish session techniques.-Covers from lite touch to deep massage.-Lot of pages, you get your money's worth.Cons:-Small physical size of book, would be nicer if enlarged.-Occasionally could use more detail on how to correctly position hands / technique but good overall.Who is this for?-Probably not someone who already has a professional job doing massages but couldn't hurt to add another reference book.-For anyone getting started in massage.-For couples who want to help their significant others sore muscles/relax/release stress.

I love that I can pick the different types of massage based off of what muscles I want to work on. My husband does physical labor for work and it’s nice for him to be able to tell me what hurts, and I just look up techniques that work on that specific area. The instructions are also easy to read and follow for someone inexperienced.

This is a SMALL book, it does not lie open flat, and it doesn't contain all that much information. This is not at all what I was expecting, however I did not read the side specifications. Book would probably make a good stocking stuffer.

Easy to follow and understand. Clear photo demonstration. Covers a wide range of diverse situations, babies and maternity to health conditions and organ function. Many different types of massage explained.

My cousin loved this! She’s trying to be a measage therapist when she’s older and she’s been using this book to practice on the family and we are not mad about that at all! 10/10 would recommend.

Easy reading, simple instruction to follow!

I highly recommend this book. If any of my daughters or husband have a tight muscle, I can easily find a technique that will alleviate the pain.

Wife loves it and I reap the benefits of her practicing although she was already good this just makes her even better ;)

What made this book such an impressive work is the author's ability to integrate all the factors involved from the land, to the weapons, the animals, the Comanches, the Europeans and Americans. This is an era of which I had only a glossed over understanding. While my history texts as a kid tended to stress manifest destiny and recent understandings seemed to focus on the "noble savage" the answers, as usual, reflect a blending of the various points of view. S.C. Gwynne does a masterful job of pulling it all together.

We live in Oklahoma - the middle of modern day Comanche County. My best friend growing up was the great-granddaughter of Chief Quannah Parker. She was even named after Cynthia Ann Parker. She has been my friend for over 60+ years. Therefore, I knew some of the history of the Comanche way of life, but from their side. I still cherish those memories of the stories told to me by her Grandmother (which was really her great-aunt, but called Grandmother by Comanche culture). She told of how afraid of the soldiers they were as children on the reservation near Fort Sill. I was a child hearing these stories, not really understanding... My family (white settlers) had settled in Oklahoma Territory from the Llano, Texas area before the turn of the century. They had lived thru the battles and loss of lives. Some went on to Arizona, but that's another story.EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON really awakened some of those memories - but from both sides. It was a horrible time for the settlers and the Indians! I have read many books on the subject, but this was the BEST, most accurate account, from both sides. It gives true documentation of events as they happened. We have given this book to so many family members and friends. A few weeks ago, we gave it to a Comanche friend. He said he learned so much about his people from this book. We HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to know the true history of the west from both sides.

My only complaint about this book is redundancy. That said, I couldn't put this down. It invaded my thoughts and dreams. There is such a deep sadness about this chapter if American History and this book just crystallized the impossible situation.I live in the area of Texas and Oklahoma covered in the book. I have family papers used by relatives three generations ago to establish Indian connections for the purpose of personal gain. I have visited the forts and parks, missions, and roadside historical signs related to this time period. This book helped me put the pieces together. If you think one group is all bad and the other all good, you will hate this book. If you want to take a hard look at what happens when cultures clash, this book tackles the subject in a compelling and interesting way.

I normally get all books from the library, which is where I first got this one. In the past 15 years I have actually bought to keep in my small "library" 2 books--Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World," & this one. Published in 2010, it is the only book I've ever found that tells the history of American expansion into the west without a strong bias toward whites, and with phenomenal documentation (nearly a quarter of the volume is a listing of citations). The fact that for over 40 years I've lived in the middle of the area primarily concerned makes it more personal to me, as well as that one of my grandmothers was born in "Indian Territory" (as Oklahoma was called at first), & my mother told of some of her childhood memories of meeting Indians in her home town as a young girl, all add to my own interest. But the main attraction is the unbiased telling of the story, "no punches pulled." The author doesn't shy away from the details of the brutallity on both sides, so it can be disturbing at times; but it also shows the admirable aspects of both sides. There is no question that Quanah was a truly great leader, but you'll have to read the whole story to understand just how great.

One of my favorite books this year and an interesting account of an often forgotten person. I read the novel just before my trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, Texas. History came alive as I relived the battles while hiking along the canyon and visiting the highly acclaimed Panhandle-Plains Museum in Canyon, Texas. Quanah Parker is an interesting, complex historical figure whose journey from feared Comanche warrior to respected politician is very well presented here.

After finishing this book, by sheer coincidence I came across Dances with Wolves as I was cruising channels. When you put the movie (about the Sioux) next to the this book - about the Comanches - you begin to realize how good it truly is and how substance it has. You might expect any story about Indians clashing with whites to leave you rooting hopelessly for the natives, but this account doesn't have that effect. The author wants you to admire the "Lords of the Plains", but he makes clear how brutal and ruthless they could be to whites and Indians alike. The Comanches were a ferocious and highly skilled band of warriors that were only defeated because of the better guns the whites had. I never imagined a tribe of 40,000 could have so thoroughly dominated such a large swath of land for hundreds of years. There was no "trail of tears" for these guys. So unflinching is the book that at times I could feel the terror I'm sure existed in the heart of every white that dared to settle near Comancheria. You're left wondering why anyone would choose to risk life and scalp - your own and your children's - to live on the barren plains of northwest Texas. That's an important question that the book leaves unanswered. If you want to learn about cowboys and Indians this book is essential. I read Blood and Thunder and this book tells a very different story. Both are excellent but if you read only about the Navajos you don't come close to getting a full picture of this, our own Hundred Years' War.
