Review

“Highly informed, compellingly written . . . there was a great deal more to the story than its heart-wrenching tragedy.” ―The Wall Street Journal“A fascinating account of a ship, its passengers, and its terrible fate.” ―Publishers Weekly“The deliberate sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-boat in 1915 has been shrouded in mystery and intrigue that continue even as the 100th anniversary of the tragedy approaches. . . . More than a chronicle of the tragedy, this offers a penetrating look at the end of the Edwardian era.” ―Booklist“The Assassination of the Archduke creates a compelling and readable account of the private life of the imperial family headed for doom.” ―Seattle Post-Intelligencer“An entertaining challenge to a century of misconceptions.” ―Kirkus Reviews on The Assassination of the Archduke“King marshals an amazing amount of information in a very fluid, compelling fashion. . . . It's eye-opening, and even fun, to visit this extraordinary group in its time and place.” ―Booklist on The Court of the Last Tsar“King has a vast knowledge of the subject, and those who are fascinated by the life of the royals and aristocratic intrigue will find much to delight in. . . . For those who are intrigued by the Russian high court, there is no better escort.” ―Publishers Weekly on The Court of the Last Tsar“Any book by Greg King is a book to be kept and savored. . . . This book is a great work of scholarship and a wonderful read” ―Peter Kurth, author of Tsar on The Court of the Last Tsar“King marshals an amazing amount of information, and just as amazingly he presents it all in a very fluid, compelling fashion.” ―Booklist on The Court of the Last Tsar“A comprehensive reexamination of the 78 days of the Ekaterinburg captivity, the murders themselves, and the 1991 exhumation of the bodies. . . . The authors engage in a complex game of historical detection that ultimately results in a controversial new perspective on an old but ever-captivating topic.” ―Booklist on The Fate of the Romanovs“Biographies of Victoria are plentiful, but King's special approach, his limited focus, certainly makes this new one far from redundant.” ―Booklist on Twilight of Splendor

This Lusitania book is about people who were on the fateful voyage. Mostly first class, some second class, no third class because they didn't leave many clues about their lives.The German U-Boat commander has always been vilified, but he was in a catch-22. The British were not playing by the rules of the sea. They carried contraband and put neutral flags on their ships. They ordered their ships to ram U-Boats. Walther Schwieger was within his rights to torpedo the British ship. It was in the war zone, carrying contraband, unmarked. Lusitania was unarmed, but could have tried to ram U-20.Captain Turner bears much blame for his irresponsible handling of Lusitania. The Admiralty bears much blame for their carelessness in safeguarding the ship. The passengers knew they would travel through the war zone on a belligerent nation's ship.Morally, should Schwieger have torpedoed Lusitania? Did he feel any remorse? His war diary was altered, and he died in the war. We'll never know if he did, in fact, fire a second torpedo.Many other books have been written about the Lusitania. This one is strong on the human interest and light on technicalities. I found it totally engrossing.

A century ago the guns were blazing across Europe. World War I was the largest conflict humanity had seen, and by the spring of 1915 hundreds of thousands had been killed and wounded. In the spring of 1915 an event took place that came to symbolize for many the waste and desolation that war brings: the sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania by a German submarine. Greg King and Penny Wilson's fine new history not only tells what happened at the sinking itself but also why it had such an impact on so many people.The Lusitania and its sister ship the Mauretania were known as the Greyhounds of the Seas, famous for making the Atlantic crossing in record times while accomodating most of their passengers in a luxury that was ostentatious even by the standards of the day. They were tall, narrow beamed ships which gave a sense of spaciousness even in the relatively restrained Second Class sections. Built by the Cunard Line with loans from the British government, it was understood that if war came they might be requisitioned and put into military service. In the event, when World War I broke out in 1914 the Lusitania was allowed to continue its passenger service between Liverpool and New York, her cargo holds often filled with ammunition and other military equipment that was, legally speaking, barred from civilian ships. In the spring of 1915 Germany, frustrated by a British blockade that kept military and civilian supplies from reaching its shores, announced a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in a zone around the British Isles. A number of ships were sunk before the Lusitania, but the Cunard liner was the largest and best known of the German submarines' victims.King and Wilson spend the first half of the book describing the Lusitania and giving short biographies of some of its best known passengers on its final voyage. Inevitably most of the material available deals with the wealthy First or Saloon Class passengers, like Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, but King and Wilson also focus on many of the Second Class passengers, who tended to be middle class. There was also a Third or Steerage class, but most of the people holding those tickets left little or no records, and thus their tales had to go unreported. It's entertaining to read about the luxurious quarters the First Class passengers enjoyed, as well as their often scandalous careers before they boarded the Lusitania for the last time.But the most compelling part of King and Wilson's book begins about half way through, when they reach the fatal day May 7, 1915, when shortly after lunch the German submarine U-20 (whose career and commanding officer Walter von Schwieger is also chronicled) fired one or two torpedos at the Lusitania off the southern coast of Ireland. The ship began to sink at once, with at least one mysterious explosion within the cargo hold causing fatal damage to its hull, and it went down in 18 minutes. King and Wilson draw from memoirs and newspaper descriptions of the survivors to provide an almost minute by minute account of the terror and confusion, abetted by poorly maintained lifeboats, incompetent and untrained crew members, and a captain who made a series of poor decisions. Those who survived the sinking itself then had to spend several hours in open lifeboats or in the water before rescuers could arrive. In all over a thousand people died, most of them civilians, including many young children and infants.The sinking of the Lusitania was not the "turning point" some have tried to make it. The US was outraged but remained out of the war for another two years. The Germans kept sinking ships without warning,and the British maintained their blockade, while the terrible battles went on and on. As King and Wilson tell it, the biggest result of the sinking was the harm done to Germany's international reputation by the descriptions of the terrible suffering and death toll. As for the surviving passengers and crew, King and Wilson provide an excellent epilogue in which they describe how the sinking altered their lives' courses and inflicted lasting physical and emotional damage.The Lusitania tragedy has always been somewhat overshadowed by the Titanic sinking three years earlier as well as by the fact that it took place in the middle of an ongoing bloodbath. Now that a century has passed King and Wilson's fine book serves to remind us that hundreds of lives and a remarkable piece of engineering were lost to the world that spring afternoon in 1915.

We are nearing the centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania and a plethora of new books are coming out. Two highly regarded historians, Greg King and Penny Wilson, have written an amazing true story of wealth and scandal set aboard the final voyage that ended in a huge loss of life.Focusing on the first class passengers, the authors use many rare accounts not normally seen in books to move the story along. They zero in on the intimate backgrounds and what brought them to be aboard the ill-fated Lusitania. King and Wilson detail the unique personalities such as a fairly open gay couple, a bigamist, a Broadway and silent screen star, a philandering millionaire, nobility from the far corners of Canada, Italy, Wales and Ireland, automobile manufacturers, art dealer, sufferagettes, spiritualists, a female architect, doctors, nurses, soldiers... Think of it as Downton Abbey at sea. Society columns followed many of these people- Alfred Vanderbilt, Rita Jolivet, Lady Marguerite Allan, Albert and Gladys Bilicke, George Kessler, Josephine Eaton Burnside, etc.. The large cast of characters used to move the story along are well-chosen and are so well-drawn that it gives the book an intimate quality as if we are peeking in on them. An impressive array of photos of the people and the ship help us as we try to picture who and what the authors are describing. The fact that several Lusitania families helped with information for this book shows the hard work of the authors.The glamorous backdrop is the ship itself and the readers are treated to vivid descriptions of the Lusitania's luxurious interiors. Life at sea is not what it is today. As there were no commercial planes it was really the only way to get to another land. We follow this group as they make friends, sip tea, read, play cards, and dance, while trying in vain not to worry about submarines and torpedoes. The suspense of what is about to happen carries readers to the fateful day. The authors show the agony of trying to abandon the ship in 18 minutes. Many heroic deeds are recorded and sad tales of overturned lifeboats, parents separated from children, and strangers helping strangers in moments of peril.The story does not end as the waters close over the stern; King and Wilson use their impressive research to show what happened to the survivors and the families of victims in later life. Some fortunes change for the better, others for the worse. I can assuredly say that this book will be very useful as a research tool in the future and highly regarded by lovers of history. Having read the authors previous works, I knew to expect a well-written book and I was not disappointed. I eagerly await their next work.

The writer humanizes history. This is the story of the tragic sinking of the Lusitania, but it is also the story of the people who lived and die during this disaster. Most of the book sets up the event by giving short biographies of some of the passengers. The book focuses on many of the wealthy and well-known travellers. Warnings were given in advance. Families were torn apart. Children died. Human error and poor planning were evident. Very informative. The book deserves an A+++

This comment is not about the book content itself, but the lack of transparency in the marketing to inform the buyers that there are several versions of the book:The complete book has 4 parts:Part 1: Astronomy and the Universe (chapters 1-5)Part 2: Our Planetary System (chapters 6-15)Part 3: Stars and Stellar Evolution (chapters 16-22)Part 4: Galaxies and Cosmology (chapters 23-28)The version I got includes only parts 1, 3, and 4. Volume 1 supposed to include chapters 1-16 and 28.The hardcover version of the book doesn't say volume 1 or 2, so it may include all chapters. I don't have that book, so I can only infer from its "Product details" that it has 800+ pages, whereas my book has only 500+ pages.I don't know the reason behind this arrangement. I can only guess it may be based on good intention that some courses may only require the content of volume 2 or 1, in that case the students can just buy one volume, not the whole book, saving them a lot of money, considering the pricing for college textbooks is astronomical these days.This is all fine. What's annoying is that the publisher has not bothered to put such a simple description in a place where people usually to find about the book structure, such as on back cover, in preface, etc. Only at the end of the detailed table of contents, in a format like a footnote, it says that all the wonderful contents in the list are not all in this book (vol 2), and chapters 6-15 "appear in Volume 1: The Solar System."As a book lover, had I known this information, I would have gone to order the hardcover book (hopefully it's the complete version with all chapters "appearing"), rather than the book I ordered that has a middle section disappeared into another volume.In fact, Amazon could have remedied the information gap by providing the description in the Product details, rather than copy-and-paste the promotional materials there.

I did not purchase this for a class, but as a new backyard stargazer that wanted to learn about astronomy in a little more depth than is provided in books like "Nightwatch". It is a textbook, obviously. However, I have found it to be a very accessible and enjoyable read with many fantastic illustrations to reinforce the concepts that it presents. Bear in mind that this is not a coffee table book, but a serious text of 750+ pages written to present, not just Astronomy, but the scientific method and observational evidence-based thinking to a collegiate audience of non-science majors. I am finding it to be a comprehensive treatment of astronomy, our solar system and the cosmos at large without being overwhelming. Astronomy Today will be a very rewarding read for those willing to put the time into it.

I purchased this text for our daughter, who is taking an introductory astronomy class. I never had the chance to take such a class myself but always had an interest in astronomy, so I started reading some of the chapters. To my great satisfaction, it was actually very well written, concise, and seemed to be up to date on the some of the more interesting and current issues in astronomy- dark matter/energy, inflationary universes, black holes, etc. It has an excellent explanation of black body radiation and how the emission profile of a celestial object gives can disclose both its temperature and much about its composition. It also takes care to show exactly what portion of the light specturm is used to generate each image (of which there are many beautiful ones included), which really helps understand why optical telescopes can't solve all the scientific mysteries (the center of the Milky Way can't even be seen in the visual spectrum due to dust). It also used a minimal amount of math, which takes away nothng from the points made. As a parent tired of forking over hundreds of dollars for textbooks that unnecessarily change edition every year (how is that possible, I ask?), I did not mind paying for this one.Kudos to the authors for a very readable and useful text. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about astronomy but never had the opportunity. The only material that I thought might be improved was the section covering the H-R diagrams of star evolution- it would help to have a simple diagram of a typical star as it progresses through the main sequence and beyond, gaining or losing mass. the luminosity and temperature portions of the process are well described, but it's a bit hard to put it all together. Is the H-R diagram really the most useful way to understand star evolution? Regardless, this book rates as an outstanding science textbook in my opinion.

This is the first and only astronomy textbook I have ever read. I was hooked to the content right away. The book is so interesting that I now understand why so many people loves astronomy. Definitely worthy reading and own the book!

This is the first astronomy text that I have read. I found it to be excellent. The illustrasions are very well chosen & complement the text well. The style of writing is pleasant. I preffered it to the novel that I was also reading! It is light on math but there is so much for a novice to learn that was probably best. Each chapter is around 20 pages which for an easy 1 day read.

Lovely and beautifully designed text with plenty of diagrams and simple explanations for many cosmic events!

It was a very good book to read for my course. It is very much to the point and nowhere near as confusing as I thought it would be.

Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks), by Miranda Kenneally

From Booklist

Kenneally (Stealing Parker, 2012) again looks at sports through a female lens, this time tackling male-dominated horse racing, in this fourth Hundred Oaks novel. Savannah, her widowed horse-trainer father, and her father’s pregnant girlfriend move to Tennessee’s Cedar Hill, a farm that trains horses for races including the Kentucky Derby. When the teen notices that she is the only one who can control Star, a horse that bucks all riders, she seizes the chance to realize her dream of becoming a jockey. But placing herself in this potentially deadly sport is not Savannah’s only danger. There’s also her instant attraction to Jack Goodwin, the farm owner’s cocky, flirtatious son. Savannah decides she wants more than “friends with benefits” (even if she can’t stop thinking about those skin-to-skin benefits), but wonders if she will always be considered “the help” in Jack’s world of privilege. The author’s knack for weaving forbidden romance, breezy dialogue, and details of this lesser-known sports venue places it in the winner’s circle for reluctant readers and chick-lit fans. Grades 9-12. --Angela Leeper

""Kenneally's equestrian-themed romance is energized by another winning heroine . . . Kenneally's story about considering the importance of one's own happiness should appeal to a wide audience; despite some bumps in the road, there's never any doubt that all will end well."" - Publishers Weekly""Kenneally has established herself as a writer of romances with some interesting complexity along with the swooning, and there's certainly plenty of swooning and steamy pleasure here. Additionally, Savannah herself is genuinely brash and not just saucy, and the Tennessee milieu is vividly evoked." Heartwarming, fun, and with characters that I felt to know and regard almost like old friends, Racing Savannah was a book I read in literally two nights. I had never read a romance that takes place in a horse-racing backdrop, and I found myself enjoying learning the ins and outs of horse racing almost as much as I enjoyed seeing Savannah and Jack's relationship develop as the story progressed. One thing I love about this author is that she portrays people realistically. Most people in the story, just like most people in the real world, are a mixed bag - and yes, there are exceptions like the creepy son of one of the horse owners. Overall though, Racing Savannah succeeds not just with the main protagonists' relationship but also the side characters which Kenneally puts in to enrich the story. Oh, and any story about a badass girl jockey falling in love is just hard not to love...so I'm giving it 5 stars.

~~~Review posted on The Heart of a Book Blogger~~~I decided to reread Racing Savannah, an old favorite, after being in a reading slump for a couple of weeks. I really do love Savannah and her passion for horses and eventually jockeying. And oh man does Jack make me swoon! I love their relationship and the Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs vibes as Savannah and Jack try to navigate their feelings. This is definitely a must read if you like sport romances!
Racing Savannah was such a great young adult novel. It was the second book in my Miranda Kenneally-binge last weekend and I enjoyed it just as much as the one before. This time it's all about a working class girl and a rich guy – and the girl and her dad just happen to work for the rich guy and his family.Savannah and Jack were both great, relatable characters. I loved them both, but Savannah came out on top as far as I'm concerned. She was wonderful. I loved her drive and her heart. She was wonderful with animals and her relationship with one of the most difficult horses at Jack's family's farm was something truly special... just like Savannah's character. Jack was a good guy in a tough spot. His father had given him a chance to run their horse farm, but he wasn't an easy guy to please. One of his father's strictest rules was "don't date the staff." I think we all know that one was doomed to be broken. Jack wasn't all swoony all the time, but he won me over when it was all said and done.Savannah and Jack had their issues – most coming because of the differences in their backgrounds and upbringing – but I still thought the romance was sweet and had a ton of heart. I loved watching both characters grow as a result of their time together, too. Despite their differences, they made a fantastic pair. It was a bumpy road, but it was also a real one.Racing Savannah takes place a few years after the first few books in the series and there was a fantastic scene a little more than halfway through the book in which we were treated to an AMAZING checkin with some of the earlier characters in the series. It totally melted my heart. I mean, big time cheesy smiles for pages and pages. I get a huge grin on my face just thinking about it! <3I love the Hundred Oaks series. I love how real and honest it is, and how Ms. Kenneally isn't afraid to tackle tough subjects in the books. These books touch on everything from sexism to religion and abortion to the "war" between the classes. They feature characters its impossible not to fall for and a storyline I just can't get enough of. I love the friendships and the romance. They're truly the total package. If you're not reading this series, you should be.
Honestly, my initial reaction upon writing this review for Racing Savannah is to want to kick myself in the butt for not reading this one when it released last year. I liked Catching Jordan, Kenneally’s debut novel, but my love for her series was cemented with Stealing Parker and fortified by Things I Can’t Forget. So, knowing I really liked her writing, I should have seized the opportunity and read Racing Savannah when it was in my hands months ago.Racing Savannah is considered another companion novel in the Hundred Oaks series. But really, it feels more like a new beginning, as readers are introduced to a new generation of characters to fall in love with. I love the familiarity of the community, but also enjoy the newness offered by these fun new people!But first, let’s focus on the one element that I loved about this book – the horses! I’ve been obsessed with the idea of horses and horseback riding since I was a little girl. (Relevant sidebar: I was a major fan of the Saddle Club books. Holler if you were too.) Though I’ve only really been riding a couple of times, it’s always been a really fun experience that I want to repeat!Ahem, okay, back to reviewing now.The story still evokes the Kenneally books of the past, focusing heavily on one character’s personal journey, and her relationships – familial, friendly & romantic. Savannah is our narrator – and she’s a really likable one, too! She’s really a typical teenager, albeit one with a strong interest in horses. Her struggles to give herself the best possible chance at a future (especially after recognizing her father’s financial difficulties), her genuine love for horses (from riding them to caring for them) and her willingness to do things for the people she cared about really won her major points with me. I liked that she made the best of her situation, and also happened to be pretty smart and downright funny at times.As mentioned, many of Savannah’s relationships become important parts of this novel. She is very close to her father, who is afraid to lose Savannah after losing his wife. She starts out not really caring about her stepmother-to-be, but still willing to do anything for her and the baby she’s carrying. She becomes friends with Rory, a groom at the stables her father works at (and little brother to a guy named Will *winks*) and Vanessa, a surprisingly down-to-earth rich girl. She also has a pretty good repartee with the stable hands, grooms and exercise trainers, and even with the family that owns the stables.And then there’s Jack. He is a rich boy, determined to prove to his father that he can capably manage their family business – their stables + horses. Jack’s known nothing but privilege all his life, but it’s pretty endearing to see how dedicated he is to making sure he handles business well. There were times when I wanted to tear his eyes out for the things he said or the way he acted, but there were also times that I wanted to hug him. In the end, he turns out to be a guy worth rooting for, that’s for sure.There are a few things that really surprised me about Racing Savannah – and again, in the best way:Sex: I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Kenneally didn’t shy away from things of a sexual nature. The reality is that many teenagers are sexually active – and that’s their choice to make. I really appreciated that Kenneally treated it as a part of regular life; it’s an excellent attitude to have.Social class: This is obviously one of the bigger issues in this novel, as Jack is rich and Savannah is, well, not-so-rich. Seeing how their realities, despite an overlap when it came to working with horses, were so different was pretty startling. I sometimes forget that extremes like this do exist, and I think Kenneally did admirably in painting a picture that seemed pretty unbiased (and didn’t attack one class for particular qualities).College & the future: One of the things many teens struggle to figure out is what they want for their future, and what they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives. Kenneally depicts two situations here. Jack is set to run the family business, and wants to. Savannah assumes she’ll go straight from high school to working around horses. It’s interesting to see how both situations play out for them, especially Savannah’s, and I really think it felt realistic.Racing Savannah was the perfect read to get back in the saddle with the Kenneally series. (See what I did there?) Really, it’s got the signature charm of the first three in the series, due to an irresistible combination of characters (including appearances of all of my old favorites) + setting + story. It was a stellar addition to the Hundred Oaks collection, and a very solid contemporary read all in all.
The best I've found so far on braiding and the turk's head knot. A comprehensive guide to round and flat braiding, lacing and knoting with a lot of little extras. The instructions, both written and pictorial, are great - clear and easy to follow. And he writes in a positive, easy-going frame of mind, so crazy as it sounds, considering I'm talking about braiding leather, he's fun to read!
I am making walking staffs for my family and wanted a way to wrap the handle. This book illustrates what i need to know to do the work!
This book, is yet another of Bruce Grants, instructional items, that I re-purchased.. I have two otherof his books, and this is an intricate continuation... First was his "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and LeatherBraiding", and the second was, "How to Make Cowboy Horse Gear" ... This one deals with a great deal ofwork, that isn't "all" in the first ones... There are some overlaps, but in general, it covers things I wanted..The three, including this one, are re-buys, because I lost my three in a fire... :( Obviously I was, or amcontent with them, or I wouldn't have pursued replacements... Initially one was out of print for a while.. Any of these instructional books require paying attention, and moving through the steps, slowly...It is difficult to make drawings, that are completely able to make you a master, in a short time.. sometrial and error, and some re-dos... But this WILL, get you where you want to go....I know there are othersthat are, probably as capable, but I like these... I would recommend this, and the others "Bruce Grant"has in print, if you are interested in learning some really neat things.. And, NO, I am not being compensated,I just like the way he, and his illustrator, are able to make this work understood...I have looked into some ofthe other books, but, I found these more to my liking... I guess that is why I replaced the three, of his, that I lost......... I hope I have helped someone....
Very good book on a variety of types of leather braiding. I am a first timer and the directions on the projects I am interested in are very good. I would recommend this book to anyone who is getting started in leather braiding. The directions are easy to follow and the drawings are very easy to read and follow. A good book for a reasonable price.
Customers who also want to buy Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding of the same auther should skip this book. Encyclopedia contains all the same information and plus many more.
Excellent book on the subject, and it covers more than just basic braiding. If you enjoy playing with leather, I highly recommend it
Super good book for me, the beginners.
The diagrams are ok, but very difficult to follow. It's a good reference to see what braids you like from the pics/diagrams and then go look up how to do them on the Internet...If you're serious about leather braiding, you should probably have it in your library as some people online will refer to pages in the book when explaining something.
Why Most Things Fail: Evolution, Extinction and Economics, by Paul Ormerod
From the Back Cover
Failure is the most fundamental feature ofbiological, social and economic systems. Just as species fail--and become extinct--so do companies, brands and public policies. And while failure may be hard to handle, understanding the pervasive nature of failure in the world of human societies and economies is essential for those looking to succeed. Linking economic models with models of biological evolution, Why Most Things Fail identifies the subtle patterns that comprise the apparent disorder of failure and analyzes why failure arises. Throughout the book, author Paul Ormerod exposes the flaws in some of today's most basic economic assumptions, and examines how professionals in both business and government can help their organizations survive and thrive in a world that has become too complex. Along the way, Ormerod discusses how the Iron Law of Failure applies to business and government, and reveals how you can achieve optimal social and economic outcomes by properly adapting to a world characterized by constant change, evolution and disequilibrium. Filled with in-depth insight, expert advice and illustrative examples, Why Most Things Fail will show you why failure is so common and what you can do to become one of the few who succeed.
It's hard to get the answer to "Why Most Things Fail." The book goes deep into mathematical formulas. Admittedly, I don't bring to this reading a background in math or economics. So, most of this exploration lost me. However, since I was still looking for the answer as to WHY most things fail I did look for the conclusions and links. Even if I were able to resolve Nash equilibria and the like, there was no correlation to the supposed narrative exploration that I could see.This does not mean that there is no value to this book. What Ormerod does posit is that there are immutable Power Laws affecting all matter - species, ideologies and businesses alike. All things fail. That alone is a powerful reframing. Existence of anything could probably be more successfully extended when strategies are anchored to this position.In one small paragraph toward the end, Ormerod does state rather succinctly the reason why things fail. It is that we as humans are limited in our ability to understand dynamic and complex environments. While we certainly can't grasp everything, there are more correlations perhaps worthy of another study. Our understanding has increased over the millennia in direct correlation to the length and quality of our existence. That is why the pursuit of information and insights, even if they are difficult to follow as they are in this book,is worthwhile.
A great read - a little dry in parts - I'd forgotten how dry economics can be - last studied them (in school) in the late 1970s!!!!Still can't get beyond the "equilibria" notion - in the real world "all other things are NEVER equal" - plus humans do not make rational choices.Seems like economists would have figured that out by now - it's not like hyperbolic discounting is a new theory.
It`s an excellent book about extinction, mainly companies` extinction, with serious critics to many economic models. Even though criticism of economical models is not new and can be found in many books, it shows the limits of each approach and why these simplifications can have impacts on planning. It`s not a book for those who are not interested in a in-depht and serious reading about the subject. I`d recommend it to economists and value investors that are interested about why even large companies usually have a so limited longevity, since their life cycle is not so bounded as it is for a living being and how extinctions happens. Is it causes by competition among companies at the same industry? Is it caused by external causes, like general economic crisis? Or maybe is it caused by both?Paul Ormerod has a serious approach to this problem and shows it in an accessible way for those who have any background on economics. I recommend it for anyone interested on the subject.
Ormerod seems to be adressing his book to public managers or business managers. In my opinion, he delves too deeply into economic analyses that are not necessary for the ultimately simple and straightforward conclusions that he arrives at. Instead, the economic analysis seems to be intended more to prove a point to the vast majority of economic experts that he berates and disagrees with. The chapters are disjointed and at times it can be difficult to tell what point the author is trying to make. From the attitude that the author displays in the book, I'm sure he would discount my review, claiming that I'm too simple-minded to follow his logic. So be it. I didn't like this book at all.
I bought this book hoping for insight into "why most things fail." What I got was a rambling argument grounded primarily on the similarity of the frequency distributions of business failure and biological failures (extinctions). Frankly, the relationship hardly strikes me as logically necessary, and the relation could well be spurious (or coincidental). But I'm no PhD and didn't give it a lot of thought, so I could well be wrong.What I am certain of is that the book offered little else, no corrolaries, certainly no explanation of the reasons "why most things fail," and no other practical insights or knowledge.Bottom line, wait for the book's appearance in the discount bin before buying.
This book is written at the seventh grade level and is consistently vapid. There are intriguing ideas--the similarities of rates of extinction and failures of businesses, but there's no real attempt to explain these similarities beyond telling us that the relevant curves obey a power law. We already knew that lots of businesses fail and that it's hard even for giant companies to keep up, but there's nothing added here that explains any of this.If you want exciting pop economics, read Steven Landsburg.
I have two perspectives for the review of Mr. Ormerod's fine book. First - if you are new to this subject, the book is interesting throughout as it helps explain, or at least builds a framework to hang our hats own about why some things seem to succeed and others fail. There are multitudes of examples from the pet rock (succeed), to the Edsel (a considered failure).Second - if you are familiar with the subject of extinction theory and dynamic systems, the book starts out slow, but really hits its stride in Chapter 8 "Doves & Hawks" (and forward) as we start to get into examples of dynamic theory and extinction theory/data. In Chapter 10 "The Powers That Be" we learn that systems in which the connections are not random but follow a power law have completely different properties than ones that do, since it is the structure of the connections between the component parts (i.e. agents) which gives systems their distinctive and characteristic features.No, don't be afraid, as this is not a technical book as I make it out to be as all the examples are easy to read and comprehend. If you are interested in this subject, other fine books to review are Ubiquity by Mark Buchanan, The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, or Deep Simplicity by John Gribbin.
This was a quick read for me, as the story flowed interestingly and effortlessly from start to finish. I was fully invested in the events of the novel and couldn’t wait to see the final outcome.
My first thought while digging into this story was of the book co-wrote with former president Bill Clinton. Admittedly, I thought it COULD have been penned by Clinton, but...well, you need to read it to understand...POV: After the first seven or eight chapters, the point of view shifts to first person, from the eyes of the lead agent charged with protection of the president. First person works quite effectively in this story.BLUSH FACTOR: Other than a few mild curses or crude words, this is absent of anything objectionable and can be shared with pretty much anyone you desire.WRITING & EDITING: Professional. The flow is good and reasonably authentic. It does feel as though it could have been written using reality as a backdrop. Not so much the current president, but just about any other recent commander-in-chief, and his wife, could be imagined without great difficulty.EXCERPT:‘…“Right now I want you to put the word out, especially to the Uniformed Division,” I say. “We’re going to get increased attention from the news media and the usual publicity hounds. I don’t want any fence jumpers, wanting to give the President romantic advice or a Bible, got it? Double up the patrols on the sidewalks…anybody approaches the fences, looks like they’re going to go over, we’re to stop them on the public side. Got it?”“Got it, boss,” Scott says, and goes back to his desk. Scott is an ex-Army Ranger, bulky and tough, and respectful of me and everyone else in the chain of command, which makes him a keeper.I shift my gaze from the network screens—AMBUSH IN ATLANTA seems to be the winning headline this morning—and glance at the electronic status board. We and other members of the Presidential Protective Division are fortunate with this administration in that there are no spoiled kids running around, trying to ditch their agents at bars or dance clubs, or slightly nutty mothers-in-law claiming that Peeping Toms are gazing at them undressing in their guest quarters. There’s just the President and First Lady, which makes my job a hell of a lot less complicated than my predecessor’s.According to the status board, CANAL is on Marine One, seconds away from landing on the South Lawn, and CANARY is—“Hey, Scotty,” I call out, just as he’s picking up the phone. “Mind telling me why CANARY is at a horse farm in Virginia? Her Plan of the Day this morning didn’t indicate that.”He says, “Last-minute change of plans, boss. After the news this morning…’Patterson, James. The First Lady (pp. 30-31). Grand Central Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEA solid four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help readers find books they enjoy reading.
This book is interesting and fast-paced, but the narrator is terrible. She speaks too fast, her cadence is completely off for conversation, but most annoying is the fact that she cannot pronounce words correctly. It is completely distracting. The Potomac is mentioned repeatedly and she calls it Pot-uh-mack. She also mispronounces Arapaho, over and over again. This is a James Patterson book! Hire a professional or at least employ some quality control. Ugh. My brain would not stop flagging all the mispronounced words and let me enjoy the book.
I have read all adult books that James Patterson has published since the original Virgin, and I have loved the characters and stories. The First Lady left me wondering because I do not know whom to blame for the weakness in the writing. As a retired English teacher, I am always looking for good grammar and style. I always taught my students that it is never correct to follow a subject with a pronoun that refers to the subject. Every chapter of this book had at least one, and often several examples of this mistake. It is incorrect to write a sentence such as, "The President, he was upset and worried." The "he" is superfluous and should never be used. The story was interesting, but the writing was bothersome to say the least.
Great book very satisfied
I couldn’t put it down starting reading at 2:00 a.m. finished at 7:30 a.m. Had a sleepless night cause the book was so entertaining I just wanted to hurry and get to the end. I did the same with The President is missing. Mr Patterson stop writing all these good books I need some sleep.😁
One of the best books I have read by James Patterson. Fast paced with many forks in the path to the end. Each twist in the plot leaves the reader wanting more. Reading this on my Kindle was a pleasure despite the lost sleep as I stayed up flipping pages. Characters are richly developed and believable. I wish there would be a follow up to this story; it certainly leaves the possibilities open for exploration.
The First Lady appeared on my e-reader this morning and I just finished it late this afternoon. Gripping story with believable characters who expose deal making behind Presidential doors.
Great product - I love it and I didn't find a better price for the paper it contains anywhere.
If you want to make your own cross stitch designs, this is what you need! The grids are perfectly sized and the pages are excellent quality!
I wish it was 10x10 instead of 10x8 for the squares. I also wish the pages were perforated. Other than that I love love love it!!
