The best I've found so far on braiding and the turk's head knot. A comprehensive guide to round and flat braiding, lacing and knoting with a lot of little extras. The instructions, both written and pictorial, are great - clear and easy to follow. And he writes in a positive, easy-going frame of mind, so crazy as it sounds, considering I'm talking about braiding leather, he's fun to read!

I am making walking staffs for my family and wanted a way to wrap the handle. This book illustrates what i need to know to do the work!

This book, is yet another of Bruce Grants, instructional items, that I re-purchased.. I have two otherof his books, and this is an intricate continuation... First was his "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and LeatherBraiding", and the second was, "How to Make Cowboy Horse Gear" ... This one deals with a great deal ofwork, that isn't "all" in the first ones... There are some overlaps, but in general, it covers things I wanted..The three, including this one, are re-buys, because I lost my three in a fire... :( Obviously I was, or amcontent with them, or I wouldn't have pursued replacements... Initially one was out of print for a while.. Any of these instructional books require paying attention, and moving through the steps, slowly...It is difficult to make drawings, that are completely able to make you a master, in a short time.. sometrial and error, and some re-dos... But this WILL, get you where you want to go....I know there are othersthat are, probably as capable, but I like these... I would recommend this, and the others "Bruce Grant"has in print, if you are interested in learning some really neat things.. And, NO, I am not being compensated,I just like the way he, and his illustrator, are able to make this work understood...I have looked into some ofthe other books, but, I found these more to my liking... I guess that is why I replaced the three, of his, that I lost......... I hope I have helped someone....

Very good book on a variety of types of leather braiding. I am a first timer and the directions on the projects I am interested in are very good. I would recommend this book to anyone who is getting started in leather braiding. The directions are easy to follow and the drawings are very easy to read and follow. A good book for a reasonable price.

The diagrams are ok, but very difficult to follow. It's a good reference to see what braids you like from the pics/diagrams and then go look up how to do them on the Internet...If you're serious about leather braiding, you should probably have it in your library as some people online will refer to pages in the book when explaining something.

It's hard to get the answer to "Why Most Things Fail." The book goes deep into mathematical formulas. Admittedly, I don't bring to this reading a background in math or economics. So, most of this exploration lost me. However, since I was still looking for the answer as to WHY most things fail I did look for the conclusions and links. Even if I were able to resolve Nash equilibria and the like, there was no correlation to the supposed narrative exploration that I could see.This does not mean that there is no value to this book. What Ormerod does posit is that there are immutable Power Laws affecting all matter - species, ideologies and businesses alike. All things fail. That alone is a powerful reframing. Existence of anything could probably be more successfully extended when strategies are anchored to this position.In one small paragraph toward the end, Ormerod does state rather succinctly the reason why things fail. It is that we as humans are limited in our ability to understand dynamic and complex environments. While we certainly can't grasp everything, there are more correlations perhaps worthy of another study. Our understanding has increased over the millennia in direct correlation to the length and quality of our existence. That is why the pursuit of information and insights, even if they are difficult to follow as they are in this book,is worthwhile.

A great read - a little dry in parts - I'd forgotten how dry economics can be - last studied them (in school) in the late 1970s!!!!Still can't get beyond the "equilibria" notion - in the real world "all other things are NEVER equal" - plus humans do not make rational choices.Seems like economists would have figured that out by now - it's not like hyperbolic discounting is a new theory.

It`s an excellent book about extinction, mainly companies` extinction, with serious critics to many economic models. Even though criticism of economical models is not new and can be found in many books, it shows the limits of each approach and why these simplifications can have impacts on planning. It`s not a book for those who are not interested in a in-depht and serious reading about the subject. I`d recommend it to economists and value investors that are interested about why even large companies usually have a so limited longevity, since their life cycle is not so bounded as it is for a living being and how extinctions happens. Is it causes by competition among companies at the same industry? Is it caused by external causes, like general economic crisis? Or maybe is it caused by both?Paul Ormerod has a serious approach to this problem and shows it in an accessible way for those who have any background on economics. I recommend it for anyone interested on the subject.

Ormerod seems to be adressing his book to public managers or business managers. In my opinion, he delves too deeply into economic analyses that are not necessary for the ultimately simple and straightforward conclusions that he arrives at. Instead, the economic analysis seems to be intended more to prove a point to the vast majority of economic experts that he berates and disagrees with. The chapters are disjointed and at times it can be difficult to tell what point the author is trying to make. From the attitude that the author displays in the book, I'm sure he would discount my review, claiming that I'm too simple-minded to follow his logic. So be it. I didn't like this book at all.

I bought this book hoping for insight into "why most things fail." What I got was a rambling argument grounded primarily on the similarity of the frequency distributions of business failure and biological failures (extinctions). Frankly, the relationship hardly strikes me as logically necessary, and the relation could well be spurious (or coincidental). But I'm no PhD and didn't give it a lot of thought, so I could well be wrong.What I am certain of is that the book offered little else, no corrolaries, certainly no explanation of the reasons "why most things fail," and no other practical insights or knowledge.Bottom line, wait for the book's appearance in the discount bin before buying.

This book is written at the seventh grade level and is consistently vapid. There are intriguing ideas--the similarities of rates of extinction and failures of businesses, but there's no real attempt to explain these similarities beyond telling us that the relevant curves obey a power law. We already knew that lots of businesses fail and that it's hard even for giant companies to keep up, but there's nothing added here that explains any of this.If you want exciting pop economics, read Steven Landsburg.

I have two perspectives for the review of Mr. Ormerod's fine book. First - if you are new to this subject, the book is interesting throughout as it helps explain, or at least builds a framework to hang our hats own about why some things seem to succeed and others fail. There are multitudes of examples from the pet rock (succeed), to the Edsel (a considered failure).Second - if you are familiar with the subject of extinction theory and dynamic systems, the book starts out slow, but really hits its stride in Chapter 8 "Doves & Hawks" (and forward) as we start to get into examples of dynamic theory and extinction theory/data. In Chapter 10 "The Powers That Be" we learn that systems in which the connections are not random but follow a power law have completely different properties than ones that do, since it is the structure of the connections between the component parts (i.e. agents) which gives systems their distinctive and characteristic features.No, don't be afraid, as this is not a technical book as I make it out to be as all the examples are easy to read and comprehend. If you are interested in this subject, other fine books to review are Ubiquity by Mark Buchanan, The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, or Deep Simplicity by John Gribbin.

This was a quick read for me, as the story flowed interestingly and effortlessly from start to finish. I was fully invested in the events of the novel and couldn’t wait to see the final outcome.

My first thought while digging into this story was of the book co-wrote with former president Bill Clinton. Admittedly, I thought it COULD have been penned by Clinton, but...well, you need to read it to understand...POV: After the first seven or eight chapters, the point of view shifts to first person, from the eyes of the lead agent charged with protection of the president. First person works quite effectively in this story.BLUSH FACTOR: Other than a few mild curses or crude words, this is absent of anything objectionable and can be shared with pretty much anyone you desire.WRITING & EDITING: Professional. The flow is good and reasonably authentic. It does feel as though it could have been written using reality as a backdrop. Not so much the current president, but just about any other recent commander-in-chief, and his wife, could be imagined without great difficulty.EXCERPT:‘…“Right now I want you to put the word out, especially to the Uniformed Division,” I say. “We’re going to get increased attention from the news media and the usual publicity hounds. I don’t want any fence jumpers, wanting to give the President romantic advice or a Bible, got it? Double up the patrols on the sidewalks…anybody approaches the fences, looks like they’re going to go over, we’re to stop them on the public side. Got it?”“Got it, boss,” Scott says, and goes back to his desk. Scott is an ex-Army Ranger, bulky and tough, and respectful of me and everyone else in the chain of command, which makes him a keeper.I shift my gaze from the network screens—AMBUSH IN ATLANTA seems to be the winning headline this morning—and glance at the electronic status board. This book is interesting and fast-paced, but the narrator is terrible. She speaks too fast, her cadence is completely off for conversation, but most annoying is the fact that she cannot pronounce words correctly. It is completely distracting. The Potomac is mentioned repeatedly and she calls it Pot-uh-mack. She also mispronounces Arapaho, over and over again. This is a James Patterson book! Hire a professional or at least employ some quality control. Ugh. My brain would not stop flagging all the mispronounced words and let me enjoy the book.

I have read all adult books that James Patterson has published since the original Virgin, and I have loved the characters and stories. The First Lady left me wondering because I do not know whom to blame for the weakness in the writing. As a retired English teacher, I am always looking for good grammar and style. I always taught my students that it is never correct to follow a subject with a pronoun that refers to the subject. Every chapter of this book had at least one, and often several examples of this mistake. It is incorrect to write a sentence such as, "The President, he was upset and worried." The "he" is superfluous and should never be used. The story was interesting, but the writing was bothersome to say the least.

Great book very satisfied

I couldn’t put it down starting reading at 2:00 a.m. finished at 7:30 a.m. Had a sleepless night cause the book was so entertaining I just wanted to hurry and get to the end. I did the same with The President is missing. Mr Patterson stop writing all these good books I need some sleep.😁

One of the best books I have read by James Patterson. Fast paced with many forks in the path to the end. Each twist in the plot leaves the reader wanting more. Reading this on my Kindle was a pleasure despite the lost sleep as I stayed up flipping pages. Characters are richly developed and believable. I wish there would be a follow up to this story; it certainly leaves the possibilities open for exploration.

The First Lady appeared on my e-reader this morning and I just finished it late this afternoon. Gripping story with believable characters who expose deal making behind Presidential doors.

Thomas J. Craughwell is author of more than two dozen books. Among them are Saints Behaving Badly (Doubleday, 2006), Saints Preserved: An Encyclopedia of Relics (Image, 2011), and Stealing Lincoln's Body(Harvard University Press, 2007), which was adapted into a History Channel documentary. I’ll keep this short. I really wanted to like the book. As a Catholic and someone who reads a lot of history, I thought the subject was interesting. As I got further into the book,I started seeing glaring inaccuracies.First, the United States did not enter WW1 because of the sinking of the Lusitania (1915). We entered the war because early in 1917 the Germans resumed unrestricted submarine warfare, resulting in further deaths of US citizens and our entry in April 1917. Also, The Zimmerman Telegraph didn’t help. Regarding the rest of the chapter on WW1, the timeline is all over the place and poorly written.Regarding Bastogne and General McAuliffe’s reply to the German commander, it was simply “Nuts”. What you quoted was said to his staff.That said, I digress, the book is about military chaplains.Regarding Father Capodanno, when he was killed he was not gunned down “as he ran to him”, the fallen medic, Corpsman Leal, but he made it to Leal. Sounds like I’m nitpicking but there is a difference. Both were killed by a MG 15 meters from their position. One account, Father Capodanno attempted to “shield” Leal from the MG that killed both of them.Regarding Father Ryan, Corporal Pace would not have carried an M-15 (the civilian model) rifle but the military version, the M-16.And finally, regarding where Father Vakoc received his initial medical care. Walter Reed Army Medical Center is in Bethesda Maryland, not Germany.I had high hopes for the book, great subject, inspirational. When I began catching these mistakes the book was ruined for me. If these were some of the mistakes I found, what did I miss? Worse, the author list sources at the end of the book but only cited two parts of the whole book. I hate to say it, skip this one. If you want to learn about military chaplains I suggest reading “Grunt Padre”, written by Daniel Mode and “The Miracle of Father Kapaun” by Travis Haying.To the author, do proper research, take your time and cite your material throughout the book. If you had done this it could have been what I had hope it would be.

Loved reading good about the church and its priests

Over the last few years I have read several books about Catholic Military Chaplains. It started with a recommendation of one book by a friend and has grown into a personal obsession. For two main reasons, first I find many if the stories inspirational, challenging, and encouraging. Second my son who is 10 has been saying for a few years that he will be a priest, and for the last year that he will be a military chaplain. This book was an amazing read, even as a Canadian reading the story s and histories about American Military chaplains was very moving. As can bee seen from the contents of this book below, this volume spans from the American Revolution to the current day war on terror.Foreword Introduction1 The American Revolution2 The War With Mexico: America's First Catholic Military Chaplains3 The Civil War4 The Spanish-American War5 World War I6 World War II7 The Korean War8 The Vietnam War9 The War on TerrorEditor's AfterwordBibliographyThe forward of this book opens with these words:"ROMAN Catholic priests serve in persona Christi. Catholics witness that priestly service in many ways; they can see it as often as every day at Mass through the sacrifice that takes place there. But the vast majority of priests are never called to offer the supreme personal sacrifice: that of literally laying down their lives for another in moments of life and death. When it comes to military chaplains, however, many have been called to do just that. Men such as these are truly in the spiritual trenches."And Thomas Craughwell does an incredible job of giving us glimpses into the life, service, and at times ultimate sacrifice of these men. Craughwell himselfin the introduction sates:"This isn't a comprehensive history of American Catholic military chaplains. It's not a biographical dictionary. This began with the first US Chaplain, who was "Father Louis Eustache Lotbiniere, a sixty-year-old French Canadian priest recruited by Benedict Arnold to serve Catholic troops in the Continental Army." The stories in this volume are very powerful, from a priest standing on a rock giving general absolution to soldiers at Gettysburg, to a pray for a change in weather that helped turn the Battle of the Bulge. To the witness of Kapaun and Capodanno this book is filled with stories that will amaze.I am not a chaplain, not a priest, and not in the military. But the stories in this book challenge my faith, they challenge me to be a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better friend, to have more faith and be more prayerful. This is not the first book I have read about chaplains, and it will not be the last, but I can state that it is an excellent read and I recommend it to students of history, Catholics of all ilk's and walks of life, and to anyone who would read stories of true heroism, valour, courage, and faith for that is what this book is filled with.

I think I'm addicted to scales. I don't know why but I just love flipping through these types of exercise books, dense with notes and accidentals and scales, and just staring at them. It's so aesthetically satisfying. And in the practice room I have to stop myself from just doing scales endlessly to work on other aspects of technique. What a problem, right? But anyways, even Trevor Wye's Practice Book omnibus isn't enough for my addiction, tons of free pdfs on IMSLP don't satisfy, so I picked this up. And it's great. Looks like it will keep me occupied forever with endless variations on scales, intervals, arpeggios, sequences, and so on. Right now, I've noticed a need to work on my third octave scales, and I know I could just mentally transpose my daily scales up an octave, but Lo and Behold there is a whole section dedicated to third octave scales here. It's much more satisfying playing the notes as they're written out. Something about all those ledger lines.It's true, most of the exercises are lifted verbatim from older sources, but he makes that clear. Some are unattributed but easily recognizable: his Section 2 Scales #7 #8 #9 are 99% the same as the famous Taffanel & Gaubert #1 #2 and #4. But again, he makes it clear that the purpose of this book is to compile all of these exercises into one volume. He gathers interesting exercises from Reichert, Maquarre, Boehm, and others. And in the case of the old French exercises, if not out-of-print they are often expensive and hard to find, so it's nice to have the content in a modern convenient edition. In addition there are plenty of his own original, interesting exercises and plenty of classic Wye commentary—hints on fingerings that improve intonation or facilitate speed are spread throughout and valuable. It's light on text, but Wye preaches elsewhere, so that's fine. It comes with a 'practice card' with some routine ideas and articulation variations, which I guess could be useful, but what would've made it really useful is printing it laminated so the student could dry-erase and re-use it.And the book is SPIRAL-BOUND, hallelujah. All music should come spiral-bound.Two points of note: (1) I don't think I've ever complained about music staff size but it's true, the whole book seems printed at 75% the standard size, like an Ossia. Two potential trouble areas are the resulting miniscule trill accidentals and quickly identifying extremely high (ledger) notes and some articulations, but since most of the exercises are scales and things you should be able to extrapolate it's not a huge problem. It is noticeable to this 28 y/o. (2) I wish there were more scale/chord annotations. For many of the scale and arpeggio exercises, you are wordlessly led through a dizzying 4-page, 32-staff exercise that changes accidentals/keys without any indication—all I want is for it to mention the key "C major" "Ab minor" etc. I know at an intermediate stage a musician should be able to recognize the keys. I might want to use the book in a cross-cutting way—quickly go through playing all the exercises in a problem key, for example, but I can't do that easily. For many of them he does indicate it, but many are not marked.

Totally awesome exercises for intermediate to advanced flutists!A blend of Trevor's own exercises and those of the "French school."Really great practice diary at the back which you can make your own Excel sheet of.If you're on the fence about whether to get it and have the spiral-bound books 1-6; yes it is sufficiently different,and totally worth buying. The notes aren't that small to read either, if you're worried about that.I can see that I will progress much faster by using the structure of this book and supplementing it with material from Books 1-6.Has interval studies and 3rd Octave studies to help with your high notes.Wish I had gotten it a lot earlier!

The exercises are terrific but the print is rather small. Exercises are challenging enough without needing to strain to see the music easily. Probably wouldn't purchase again if I knew the print was so small.

I've played the flute for 13 years, professionally for 5 of those, and have taught on-and-off throughout college. I was an All-State player and a music major for the first 2 years of college, but decided to pursue other options. This has become my absolute favorite flute practice book - I swear, it has everything. Couple this with the Trevor Wye complete set (5 books), a tuner and a metronome, and you're essentially set for life.

I bought this as a gift for my sister for Christmas. She's an experienced flute player playing since middle school and she wanted something to keep her playing even though she doesn't get to as much as she'd like. She said she liked the different music and exercises they have to keep her interest.

Add the Trevor Wye 'Omnibus' book to this one and the intermediate/advanced flutist will have enough technical exercises to last a lifetime! Great book!

I bought this book not really knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised! I use it almost daily and as a result of practicing the exercises in this book have noticed a lot of improvement in my playing. I recommend it for the library of every flutist!

Hope Survives is the ninth volume in Harley Tate's addicting After the EMP series, and it's a massive step-up from the preceding Hope Stumbles, which is the weakest entry as all the conflict that went down in that one turned out to be much ado about nada.In Hope Survives, ten months - or 300 days - had elapsed since a solar storm took out the national power grid. Our small band of survivors has settled into the rhythms of living in a harsher new world, or at least the northern California bits of it. It's the middle of winter now, so it's been tougher sledding, but they've been making do. Their recent alliance with the Jacobsons - the "villains" of the last book - is still a bit shaky, with some of our guys optimistic about making the partnership work while others are more cautious.But the Jacobsons may be the least of their problems. One day, Walter Sloane hears a transmission over the radio heralding the advent of the Unified States of America, and that help is on the way, with census takers coming soon to conduct assessments. They'll be escorted by armed military units, of course.Again, not everyone is on the same page about this news. Some are eager for the government, whatever government, to show up. Some aren't so keen to give up their newfound independence. Is it a spoiler to tell you that the radio transmission and the welcome/alarming news it brings will have to be addressed in a future book? Put a pin on that plot thread.Our group has a more immediate problem. A well-armed group of marauders has found the pharmacy that the Jacobsons have guarded so zealously. And there go the Sloanes and their friends and allies once again caught up in a series of heated battles.Harley Tate makes it look easy with his storytelling, makes it seem as if anyone can just pick up a pen and write page-turners. Hope Survives is a dynamite read. Like the other books, it's also a short read. There's no let-up; the action blisters; the suspense is nuts. But not at the expense of solid character work. I cared about our crew, never mind that Madison does something incredibly stupid that puts her and Brianna in a dangerous situation that could've been - should've been - avoided. But, at least, her mom, Tracy Sloane, goes back to being the badass she was in the first book. I love how our battle-hardened characters now come across like a well-oiled machine when it comes to taking fools out. It reminds me of the cast of The Walking Dead circa Season 6 when they infiltrated what they thought was the Saviors' headquarters with such precision... but, of course, you know how that eventually turned out.This book also addresses a plot thread that had dangled for some time now, and it's to do with the cache of firearms our guys found in that gun-runner's muscle car back in, oh, I forget which book.In his afterword, the author mentions that he regards these nine books, collectively, as Season One. And that, for now, he's moving on to write more in his Nuclear Survival series. But he also mentions that he hasn't ruled out diving into a Season Two in After the EMP. My two cents is, there had better be a Season Two.

Yes, this is a great series to read. Lots of adventure and excitement. I love the strong characters and their ability to provide and protect themselves. Please continue to write more books in this series.

I started this book a little over an hour ago, and I just finished it. What a story. This is a roller coaster of a plot with characters to care about. What are you waiting for? Get a copy and get reading.

So many twists and turns but all my favorites pull through. Inventive plot turns keep one guessing. Who are the census takers? You can not stop yet.

I liked and enjoyed the books, all of them. I just don't like waiting solong between books. I read a lot, and it gets hard rememberingthe characters in the different books when there is such long waitingperiods. I have now switched to adding to my wish list until 6 or moreof the books are written in a series, especially when some books areonly 100-200 pages long ! It was still worth the read with the waiting.

Really love this series and can’t wait for the next book. It’s always interesting. The characters struggles seem real. Great writing!

This entire series has been great!! Riveting!! I hope she will keep writing more sequels.
