Purchased this for my 10 year old grandson who is just getting interested in coin collecting. He has read it cover to cover and now knows more about coins than anyone else I know. It was a great book to teach him the basics plus enough information to move him forward with his collecting. It provided website and book information so that he could read further. Photos are all black and white but very adequate to learn the different coins.

Just received this last night and dove right in reading. Exactly the information I was looking for. I collected pennies as a kid and gave what I had to my nephew 30 years ago. Decided to start back with some coins I had stored in containers. Mostly just USA and Canadian coins. I will continue to read this book from front to back, its that good and informative.

Actually, the book was more informative than I thought. Simple and straight forward. Good reading for the beginning or intermediate coin collector.

This was a birthday present along with a bag of old pennies, for his birthday. He is having fun identifying the right ones to put in the right place for keeping.

Very useful book! Been collecting coins via pocket change for years and decided to "step it up" a bit. This book gave me valuable insights on coin collecting do's and don'ts.

Very Good overviews of starting to collect coins, with simple instructions on where and how to get advice and direction, good guidelines and pointers on how to read various grading standards of coins. Pointers where given on how to store coins and gave several web sites locations that deal directly with coins. It is not a "do all" that covers everything. It is more of an overview on how to start coin collecting and directs you in several potential locations to go, leaving the final choice up to the collector.

Guth does an excellent job in teaching how one could & should start a coin collection. When I was a kid, I made a stupid decision to collect stamps, which can be cut up and burnt. Now coins are much more durable, and their value is obvious.

My husband is a coin collecting fanatic. But even though he has a lot of information on coin collecting there is always more to learn. So we turned to this book and were delightfully surprised with how much information that it had to offer. I have always been a huge proponent of the "...DUMMIES" books and once again they've done a great job with this one.

This is a fascinating and well written book appropriate to anyone wanting to be their fittest. The author has a great sense of humor and uses the right blend of scientific rigor and personal experience (to keep you reading what could otherwise by a boring tome. Finished in one setting and ready to apply her insights into my own fitness goals.

If you are serious enough about training to buy this book, you already know most of what it will say. If you think it works, it works. And sleep and rest are completely underestimated in the recovery process. That being said, the stories are interesting and it's an easy, enjoyable read.

Sports recovery has become an obsession among athletes. Christie Aschwanden examines the science of recovery in a skeptical and objective manner. That is so refreshing in a field that is dominated by pseudoscientific claims. But more than that, it is the first book I’ve read in a while that combines outstanding science journalism and fun to read.Aschwanden is the perfect expert for this topic: She is one of the best science writers and a lifetime athlete (she raced on the Team Rossignol Nordic ski racing squad).In this context, I also recommend Plant Victorious: How Athletes Can Push Their Performance Limits With Plants , which delivers a delightful overview about the most effective natural sports foods.

Highly recommended for anyone who cares about sports, or even anyone who just cares about thinking carefully about science. A delightful read that beautifully combines openness and skepticism.

I have mixed feelings about this book, I got to a point where it felt like “When is the Author going to believe in something”. There is still value in the information in it, but i disliked the feel of the writing style, it almost felt like negative or some sort of anger in the writing. I got to a point when I asked myself, “when is she going to like somthing?”. Advice: do not read the last paragraph, it will summarize the whole book in 5 rows.

Great book. Readable with fine research and engaging style. Clarifies many of the current myths for recovery. If you seriously follow your progress as an athlete at any level, read this.

It "had" me before I had finished the preface, much less the first chapter.Although I was predisposed to enjoy it, I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. This is a book that greatly and delightfully exceeded my expectations. I have read many books about the Plantagenets, both straight history and as literary "docudrama." I am very familiar with the stories of each of the monarchs, the wars, the disputes and so on. It could have been old news for me, but instead, it was like reading it for the first time. What a wonderful fresh voice the author brings to material that has been written about -- one might think -- to the point where you could reasonably question whether or not yet another tome on the subject serves any purpose.Was anything new uncovered? Not really new information, but a new way of looking at existing knowledge I had read in many other forms. Pity this book was completed before the remains of Richard III were found ... I wonder if that discovery might have altered the author's perception of this most controversial and last of the Plantagenet kings? I have often felt Richard to be unfairly maligned, but give what we know, we are each entitled to put whatever interpretation seems reasonable as an overlay to the same information.As you might expect, the book includes maps, lineage charts, all the family connections of the Plantagenets. The story covers that period from Empress Mathilda through Richard III. It stops before the ascent of the Tudors. That, as the author points out, is another book. And I want to read that one, too.This is a long book. I had no trouble with its length other than finding enough time to read the whole thing. It wasn't hard to become engrossed in each of its sections. It doesn't require any particular prior knowledge of the period, although prior knowledge would certainly not hurt any. In any case, you can hardly grow up an English-speaker and not have heard of so many of the characters that strut, gallop or crawl across the pages.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is wonderful, whether or not you are a scholar, history buff, Anglophone or Anglophile, lover of historical novels ... or innocently searching for a great read.It's available in hard cover, paperback, Kindle and audio format. I don't believe you could go wrong no matter what version you choose.

Like many other people who are thinking about getting this book, I am reading it for a history class. I would agree with many that it is a compelling read and very interesting, but it can get kind of confusing and boring if you don't know anything about this time period of these people. I'm am writing a paper on this, and I've found that by rereading the preface, I was able to piece everything together again. If you start to feel bogged down in the countless details, then reread the summary of the books parts in the preface. This will help even if you're reading it for fun, because it reminds you of what's important and why. I would definitely recommend this book, I didn't value English history much before I read this, and now I hope to read more about this time period and the ones preceding and succeeding it if I get the chance!

Growing up in Southern California during the late 50s and early 60s in a middle-class WASP environment, I, an avid reader born of two avid readers, was almost predestined to be exposed to stories of King Arthur, Robin Hood, and King Richard the Lionheart. Plus, going to a Catholic grade school, we learned of King Henry VIII, who treated several of his wives most shamefully and tore his realm from the bosom of Mother Church. Thus, by 1975, I was primed for my first visit to England. Upon my return, I stumbled upon the magnificent 4-volume set on the Plantagenet kings by Thomas Costain (THE CONQUERING FAMILY, THE MAGNIFICENT CENTURY, THE THREE EDWARDS, THE LAST PLANTAGENETS). I became hooked then, and for life, on British history, and I’ve returned to the island more times than I can offhand remember and travelled to all its corners and many points in between.THE PLANTAGENETS by Dan Jones, though it concludes with Richard II while Costain’s series continues to Richard III’s overthrow by Henry Tudor (Henry VII), is simply a magnificent reminder to me four decades later why I came to love England and Great Britain more perhaps than my own country.THE PLANTAGENETS contains eight pages of color photos. Surprisingly, it’s in this section that I noticed a glaring mistake, rather surprising since the book as a whole is obviously such a work of love for the author. One of the snaps is of Conwy, one of Edward I’s Welsh castles. The trouble is, it’s not Conwy, but Harlech. That’s like mislabeling a photo of London’s Westminster Cathedral (Roman Catholic) as St. Paul’s Cathedral (Anglican). The two are very different in appearance and identity. (I trust one also knows the difference between Westminster CATHEDRAL and Westminster ABBEY.)The startling error in the photo section aside, if you can’t find Costain’s books, then that by Jones is a splendid narrative on the subject. Honor is due Dan for the effort and research it took to write it.

If at any point during the first, say, 3/4 of this book you had asked me what I'd rate it, I'd have said five stars. Hands down. The writing is so smooth. I simply *like* Rory as a character. Love the voice, the fact that she really is an average girl, totally easy to relate to. I was sucked in, reading along, just loving it...until, I realized everything I thought was subtly building up to something was not.The fact is, nothing really happens until the very end, and then it all happens very quickly and unimpressively. This entire book feels like a bridge. Like, well, time needs to pass so *the big ending twist* can happen, and we can actually move into the real story the author had in mind.It's hard, too, to write about what frustrates me because it's directly related to the end. It truly could have been just as twisty--and would have had MORE impact, if the whole Jane part of the plot had been left out and things focused on Rory and the Shades. That's all I'll say.I'll still read the next book, because I have a feeling the author will be tying a lot of the loose strings together and despite it all I just love the author's writing. But for now, I'm frustrated with how this one ended--enough to knock two stars off my rating.

Fair warning, there will be spoilers for a plot development in this book. I'll clearly mark that section, otherwise here we go: I came to this series in an odd manner. I was looking for a different book I'd heard being reviewed on NPR and saw a recommendation for this book on the site. There was no mention of it being Young Adult and specifically because it was an NPR review, it didn't occur to me that it might be. So I purchased the first book, planning to buy this one.Color me pleasantly surprised there. Yes, it was a Young Adult title, but it was engaging and funny. Rory spent very little time in need of being rescued, and really refreshingly for YA, when she was in trouble, it wasn't some knight in shining armor that came to save her. I eagerly purchased this book, looking forward to a quick, but pleasantly creepy read.I'm torn here. The antagonist is so thoroughly annoying, and slightly cartoonish (almost literally, the character is described in a manner that sounds like an animated person). Most of the time at Wexford is a bit of a waste of time and I think Johnson makes a mistake in isolating Rory so much from characters that were enjoyable in the first book. Still, it's so fun to see a young woman not wholly defined by an attachment to some brooding boy. Rory is funny, endearing, but clearly traumatized by the events of the first book. It's fitting, but a little plodding. In fairness, it also turns out to be purposeful.Vague Spoilers for some of the book to follow:The Shades all felt just a bit off to me. The very beginning when it seems that Rory is being relegated back to her life, cut off from them didn't really fit with the events of the first book. Callum in particular takes a turn for the far too angry at the very end, and that is taking into account the emotional stakes. It just didn't feel entirely organic.After a slow first half, the book becomes a bit too rushed and then ends very abruptly with a plot choice that made me wince.Specific spoiler to follow:Johnson makes a decision at the very end that feels too abrupt and then simply ends the book too quickly. It's not a satisfying conclusion and it feels very much like a dropped call rather than a full story. It just ends on a rather displeasing note that could have easily been avoided. What I think is that Maureen Johnson truly didn't want Rory being defined by a romantic attachment, and I do applaud that. However, this seemed a cruel way to achieve that when a different choice could have been made with the character of Stephen(such as simply having him be uninterested in Rory romantically). Having made the rather abrupt choice, it would have been nice to get a bit more resolution on that.End to spoilers.I'd recommend this book, but truthfully I wouldn't recommend reading it until such time as the third book is released. The ending is that abrupt and rather unwelcome. It took a fun, slightly creepy story in The Name of the Star and bled a lot of the fun out of it in The Madness Underneath. That was before it got to the end, and that didn't improve matters, in my opinion. Read when the next is available, I'd say.

I've seen some reviews talk about how this book isn't as good as Name of the Star, which of course is the first book of the series (Shades of London). But I disagree. While it may not contain the same amount of suspense as the first book, I think Madness Underneath does a really great job at following up on the life of Rory and her friends and of course the next chapter. There is far more character development on the part of Rory, we learn a great deal more about the other Shades (Stephen especially), the Sight and the book introduces a much larger plot. In my opinion, Madness Underneath is a far more interesting than the first book. It was so interesting, in fact, that I read the book rather quickly. Less than a week, even on my busy schedule. I'm rabid to find out where Maureen Johnson is going to take the series.I discovered the series simply because I happened upon Johnson on twitter (if you don't follow her, you should...she's hilarious). After about a year of her antics on twitter, I decided to pick up the series. I don't know that her other books would be all that interesting to me - a 35 year old father of two - but this series really hits home. The concept is surreal and completely believable at the same time. She weaves an incredible storyline into the rich London culture, and she does it flawlessly. The only problem...I'm going to have to wait a while for the third book. :(So yeah, bottom line...this book is awesome.

For example, with the Gow-Gates, the nerve as well as blood vessels are in very close proximity, and so even with multiple aspirations as per the recommendations of this book, the author failed to mention the anesthetic should not contain epinephrine.

Not all that interesting- it is a textbook, after all. It is well organized and as easy to read as any text could be. I was required to read it in its entirety before my class, which I did, and felt well prepared once I got to my class lecture day.

This is a very thorough book for all clinicians. It explains the theory of anesthetic action, covers the various types of anesthetics - and their various formulations.It describes various anesthetic techniques in excellent detail. The DVD is a great addition, to be able to see the techniques and anatomical landmarks. additionally, I found several new techniques that I have had good success with.I recommend this book for the student, new clinician, as well as a valuable review for experienced clinicians

My daughter needed a book for her course so we looked into amazon, thinking we would buy it. To my surprise we could borrow it, who knew, lol. With that in mind I ordered it and received it in a very reasonable time. My daughter studied for a couple of weeks and took her test , and passed. The book was a great help.

I found this book to be good, however it could be better. Some chapters are well written and others I feel like they're copied and pasted. I would have to sit and reread certain sections for minutes to understand what is written and the author keeps referring back to previous editions, making it all the more difficult at times to grasp. It would also be beneficial if the book were to come with an interactive website and if the cd was sold with it. Instead, you have to pay extra for it and I don't think that's right. It isn't a bad book, just one that'll take you some time getting used to.

It was good to hear that he had a similar experience as a new trader like doing. It was a nice look into the concept of day trading. Easy to understand and very informative when it came to charting. Easy to read, helps in understanding day trading. Would recommend for someone who doesn't have a clue what day trading is all about.

This guidebook is good a source of information that can help anyone get started, moving out of the realm of the beginner and working with individuals who have been exploring the idea of day trading before, and who have maybe seen some success with some of their trades in the past.
