When I visited Myrtle Beach, the famous Grand Strand of South Carolina, for the first time in 1976, the area was home, as I recall, to about thirty golf courses. That number, I think, is now over a hundred, but that's not the point. Rather, the point is that among those thirty, two stood out: the Dunes, a resort course that was quite pricey for empty-pocketed me, and Skyway, a unique aggregate of three nines that one could reach only by traveling over an open gorge in an overhead tram. What fun! And the golf was even better. Courses then advertised their length, their grasses, and their designers, and I was pleased to learn that both the Dunes and Skyway (now known as Waterway Hills) were designed by Robert Trent Jones. I knew that name, and I knew he was considered one of the greatest golf course architects in the world. And now, thanks to this extraordinary book by historian Jim Hansen (full disclosure: Jim and I attended graduate school together and played on the same softball team), I know how Trent Jones became what he was.Truth be told, there were golf course designers before Jones--and the work of the best of them should not be denigrated--but it was Jones who turned designers into architects and transformed a job into a profession. Early on in his life, he set his mind to his task. As a special student at Cornell, he fashioned a unique curriculum in all the disciplines he would need to succeed. And then he did just that. Thanks to the Depression, his career moved very slowly. But thanks to the New Deal's WPA, he got just enough work to keep going, and when prosperity returned, he was off and running.For nearly seventy years, Trent Jones--he added Trent as a middle name to distinguish himself from Robert Tyre Jones, the more famous Bobby Jones--set the standard for what a golf course architectural firm should do and, even more significantly, what a championship golf course should look like. It was no accident that when the USGA made a concerted effort to modernize and toughen a series of traditional courses so that they could host the U.S. Open, Trent Jones was the man upon whom they called. The title of Hansen's book, "A Difficult Par," stems directly from Jones's view of how a championship course should play. Even today, looking at a Robert Trent Jones course is like looking at a Frank Lloyd Wright house. They just stand out.Lest the potential reader fear that this book, like so many other golf books, is mere hagiography with material gleaned from newspaper clippings and magazine articles, please note "A Difficult Par" is a critical work by a seasoned historian, steeped in original research. Hansen spent several summers at Cornell, toiling in the hundreds of archival boxes that now contain the Jones papers, donated, most fortunately, to the university by Jones's two sons. This, then, is a work of scholarship, measured, diligent, careful, and informed by Hansen's own deep knowledge of the game.Jones' career was no joy ride. He was an atrocious businessman and in his later years that fault played a major role. Moreover, despite his efforts to pass his firm off intact to his two sons, Robert Trent, Jr., and Rees, these two etched out their own career paths and disagreed intensely with one another on numerous occasions. Hansen sugar-coats none of this, and it is to the sons' credit that they let a real historian write this book unimpeded. Readers can consult the "Note on Source," a fascinating essay by itself to learn how Hansen met the Jones boys and won their trust.There are many other books on golf course architecture, of course, and some few intended for the general public. "A Difficult Par" should join this select group. It can hold its own without asking for any strokes.
I learned so much about what it takes to design a golf course from this book - grasses, terrain, tees, greens, the rough, architecture, engineering, drainage, and terrific business savvy. Robert Trent Jones Sr had incredible determination to get his dream job - making contacts, getting involved in the industry, learning from mentors, persuading Cornell to accept him and selling his ideas.There's details on specific courses - who knew that some lava could be ground to make a thin layer of soil for Mauna Kea's golf course in Hawaii, and some could not - or that guests would get winded at altitude at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs if the course was badly routed. There's plenty about Robert Trent Jones' approach to design - where to put the bunkers, how to do the plans, how to get people to implement the plans.The book has details on Robert Trent Jones two sons (disclaimer: it was seeing Robert Trent Jones II carrying the book that made my buy it) and his wife. There's a lesson for families and family businesses on making corporate structures crystal clear.The author sets a good pace, with footnotes in the text and a list of golf courses with dates at the end. There are also photos. The book should be of interest to anyone who likes business biographies and/or golf.
Although Jones's work has fallen out of favor lately, surpassed by the new courses of the "minimalist" era, he played an important role in the history of course design and Hansen brings Jones's reputation back into the discussion after he has been been looked down on for so many years. This alone makes it a worthy effort. Hansen's best work is in areas that are lesser known, in particular the creation of the secretive Vidauban course near the French Riviera, which nearly bankrupted Jones. The original concept at Vidauban was to build three golf courses, 3,000 condominiums and two large hotels. Hansen also describes in detail the complicated (and tense) relationships among Jones and his sons Rees and Robert Jr. Another interesting story Hansen relates is the fact that Jones was present at a Coup d’état attempt on the King of Morocco, who he designed the Royal Dar Es Salaam course for. While he was on the property armed soldiers starting shooting at the palace and captured the King for a period of time. Jones was held by the armed captors during the harrowing event. One star detracted for too much detail in places, but well written and interesting.
