About the Author

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended Princeton University, where he began writing what would become his first novel, This Side of Paradise. He left Princeton to join the army during World War I, though the war ended shortly after his enlistment. This Side of Paradise, published in 1920, was a critical and financial success and was followed the same year by his first story collection, Flappers and Philosophers, followed by Tales of the Jazz Age in 1922. Fitzgerald went on to publish three more novels—The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night—and many more stories. He died in 1940, leaving his last novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, unfinished.

There's a reason F. Scott is one of the GOATs. What he can do in describing a dinner scene is greater than what most authors can do in their entire novels. The words here are beautiful, decadent, oozing style and grace and charm and sensuality in spades. While the pacing is often slow, when you realize that it was done deliberately you begin to enjoy the words upon words F. Scott uses to delve into the minutiae of these people's lives. Anthony and Gloria aren't exactly likable characters, and they weren't meant to be, but in watching their lives fall apart and their dreams become ever more deferred they do manage to extract a tiny bit of sympathy from the reader. If you have some time on your hands and enjoy a little bit of schaudenfreude, it's more than worth a read.

I enjoyed reading this novel for Fitzgerald's brilliant portrayal of broken and twisted characters who give into the Seven Deadly Sins, and their rewards. Fitzgerald's writing style in this book makes it apparent that he's still developing and honing his skill, yet it doesn't distract from the story. I really like "The Beautiful and Damned."

The Beautiful and Damned is Fitzgerald's second book and is set in pre Jazz Age NYC. It is a dark and depressing story of the American aristocracy and nouveau-riche. The author writes a scathing commentary on society life and his tone is cynical and critical of nearly every character he introduces us to.There is nothing redeeming about our two selfish and shallow protagonists, Anthony and Gloria. It's all about greed, manipulation, pettiness and depravity. If, as is thought, Gloria is based on Fitzgerald's wife, Zelda, it's not a very flattering portrayal. Gloria is trading on her beauty and Anthony on his promised inheritance. I felt no sympathy for these two, who find themselves in dire straits due mostly to their hedonism and stupidity. Both are pathetic.While there are very many well written passages, some parts of the novel seemed over long. The story did keep me guessing as it unfolded, but I anticipated a bad end to this well-matched couple: well-matched in their extreme narcissism and lack of morale ethic.Fitzgerald thoroughly convinced me there was nothing glamorous about the endless partying, resulting alcoholism and broken, useless lives of the Beautiful and Damned.

I first read The Beautiful and Damned when I was about fourteen, right after I had read my first Fitzgerald book, The Great Gatsby. And I was, of course, greatly disappointed; this is no Gatsby. I found the novel verbose and dull, and I couldn't relate at all to the two main characters, Anthony and Gloria Patch, a spineless rich boy married to a lazy, domineering, spoiled brat. They must surely be two of the least sympathetic characters in literary history.Reading this novel again, almost forty years later, I found much more to appreciate about it than I did at first reading, but I finished it with a heavy heart, fervently wishing that a talented editor had taken an entire box of blue pencils to the manuscript.One of the great literary achievements of "Gatsby" is its amazing economy of style; Fitzgerald stuffs an enormous amount of information into a very short book, without once leaving us feeling that something's been left out. (This is probably because Gatsby, alone among Fitzgerald's novels, began its literary life as a novella--a long short story--rather than as a novel. Fitzgerald literally pulled the original novella manuscript out of galley typesetting and expanded it into a novel.)"Economy of style" is a description you certainly can't apply to The Beautiful and the Damned; it meanders all over the place, and it employs a hokey and odd literary device by turning some of the dialogue into actual dramatic scenes from a play, rather than prose. This device might have worked if Fitzgerald had used it throughout the book, but he doesn't; he drops the dramatic scenes after the early chapters of the book, and never re-uses them again. That just makes those scenes stand out even more awkwardly amid the regular prose.The book also suffers very badly from the lack of sympathetic main characters. Of course, the whole point of the plot is that these people are awful, but we need **some** reason to keep reading their story. Again, if an editor had taken out his box of blue pencils, he might have noted on the manuscript that Anthony and (and especially) Gloria needed some kind of sympathetic counter-balance to their general, dual awfulness. Otherwise, why continue reading? There is a slight--very slight--sympathetic air attached to Anthony, whose main redeeming quality is his self-loathing; he knows he is awful and is ashamed of it, but is not strong enough to do anything about it. Gloria, on the other hand, has no clue that she is a greedy, incredibly selfish monster; she thinks her looks are the only thing she needs to offer up to the world in order to obtain all the "goodies" to which she feels entitled.Despite these major flaws, the book is still worth reading for Fitzgerald's matchless prose, some of the prescient philosophizing (he rightly predicts the death of poetry as a literary art form, and for the correct reason, too) and the richly drawn tertiary characters, such as Tana, the Japanese houseboy, and Dot, the tragic Southern camp follower who falls hopelessly in love with Anthony. There is also something to be gained at pondering the lives and personalities of the Patches and realizing that most of us, no matter how flawed we think we are, are much better people than they are.

Richard and Flora choose Rue to be their surrogate, and Rue needs money to save her family home. What I loved most about this book was the awakening of Richard. He was a hollow man until Rue filled him up and humanised him. He'd come from a monied family and earned more in his own right. He was fascinated by the down-to-earth Rue and at the same time, somewhat repelled by her choices (why live in Whiskey Hollow when you can live in an apartment in the city?).Rue's friends Tessie and Christopher made great additions to the secondary characters, and revisiting Cletus, Jeb, and Bubba Ray (and his recipes) was pretty fun. I enjoyed the storyline, and the homey magic of Whiskey Hollow.The Christmas Surprise: I was absolutely delighted to see another story set in the Hollow! All Holly wants to do is escape Christmas, her least favourite time of the year. She meets gorgeous Graham, the single dad off to see his son for Christmas. But when they are serendipitously stuck in Whiskey Hollow due to a storm, anything can (and does!) happen. I love the crazy happenings in the Hollow almost as much as I enjoy the love stories that happen there, and I think this book has far surpassed the rest. Graham & his young son Charlie are going to take the Bah Humbug out of Christmas for Holly. This book is filled with love, humour, and total quirk. Once you've had a taste of Whiskey Hollow, you're gonna want more!Redemption: This book was simply full of complicated feels. The histories of the main characters, Garrett and Gwendolyn, were secret and tragic, and made them both fearful of fully loving & trusting. Their path to embracing their fears and healing with love was full of bumps but they made it! Mr Banks is one of my favourite authors because he writes about emotions fully and deeply. There was a great sense of contentment and closure as I finished this fantastic book. Beautifully written, highly recommended.

Because this is a box set...longer review.First, I'm just getting into romance novels. This was a cheap but surprising find. Stories had GREAT dialogues, funny situations and ( because I'm tall -5'11) relatable . I will tell you I have never went back and read sections and highlighted while chapters in my life. Just note that each book has moments to treasure. Strong females and males ( cocky but bearable)Accidental Daddy- the midnight search of a haunted house will have you dying laughing(pun intended)Becoming Daddy-resturant scene with shotty patrons..I can see this happening, how else would you handle a pregnant, hysterical woman...oh, you will love Rue's name...Still laughingChristmas Surprise...the whole book is highlighted but the plane ride was read three(3) times through tears of laughter.The other two stories Hot Daddy and Redemption were more serious and made me appreciate single fathers.

Each of these stories in this box set is incredible and uniquely inspiring in their own way. I love this author and his way of taking me on a journey in each story. Passion, chemistry and most of all love for each other and the children involved. These are worth the price and I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I did!! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this box set. Loved so much I bought my own forever copy!!!

I can't believe I am doing this because I gave this series one star after reading the 1st two books...I should have finished all the books before rating this boxed set...Book 3 was much better. I thought my husband was going to call the funny farm after he heard me roaring with laughter. Man you have to love the people that live in Whiskey Hollow....I owe RR Banks an huge apology....So far I am now in the middle of book four and am liking it..Up graded from to a 1 star to a 4.star.

A compilation of men who had either one-night stands or a short affair. The tragedy to some of them about not knowing about their children is heartbreaking. A real heart pulling and side taking story. I’d like to say, “Bag It” or “Be Smart”, but then the series wouldn’t work.Accidental Daddies: A Contemporary Romance Box Set

This is a great boxed set of 5 of R. R. Banks Daddy themed books. The characters in each story are interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The stories are all interesting, well-written, with a happily ever after. You can't go wrong with a book by R.R. Banks. I highly recommend this boxed set.

I enjoyed these books. All the books can be read as stand alone books, but a couple are related. Each book has a happy ending. They are all easy to read and kept my interest. The books do contain adult themes. There are sex scenes, but nothing overly erotic or distracting or distasteful. I do recommend this box set. Enjoy and happing reading. This review is strictly my opinion.

When I visited Myrtle Beach, the famous Grand Strand of South Carolina, for the first time in 1976, the area was home, as I recall, to about thirty golf courses. That number, I think, is now over a hundred, but that's not the point. Rather, the point is that among those thirty, two stood out: the Dunes, a resort course that was quite pricey for empty-pocketed me, and Skyway, a unique aggregate of three nines that one could reach only by traveling over an open gorge in an overhead tram. What fun! And the golf was even better. Courses then advertised their length, their grasses, and their designers, and I was pleased to learn that both the Dunes and Skyway (now known as Waterway Hills) were designed by Robert Trent Jones. I knew that name, and I knew he was considered one of the greatest golf course architects in the world. And now, thanks to this extraordinary book by historian Jim Hansen (full disclosure: Jim and I attended graduate school together and played on the same softball team), I know how Trent Jones became what he was.Truth be told, there were golf course designers before Jones--and the work of the best of them should not be denigrated--but it was Jones who turned designers into architects and transformed a job into a profession. Early on in his life, he set his mind to his task. As a special student at Cornell, he fashioned a unique curriculum in all the disciplines he would need to succeed. And then he did just that. Thanks to the Depression, his career moved very slowly. But thanks to the New Deal's WPA, he got just enough work to keep going, and when prosperity returned, he was off and running.For nearly seventy years, Trent Jones--he added Trent as a middle name to distinguish himself from Robert Tyre Jones, the more famous Bobby Jones--set the standard for what a golf course architectural firm should do and, even more significantly, what a championship golf course should look like. It was no accident that when the USGA made a concerted effort to modernize and toughen a series of traditional courses so that they could host the U.S. Open, Trent Jones was the man upon whom they called. The title of Hansen's book, "A Difficult Par," stems directly from Jones's view of how a championship course should play. Even today, looking at a Robert Trent Jones course is like looking at a Frank Lloyd Wright house. They just stand out.Lest the potential reader fear that this book, like so many other golf books, is mere hagiography with material gleaned from newspaper clippings and magazine articles, please note "A Difficult Par" is a critical work by a seasoned historian, steeped in original research. Hansen spent several summers at Cornell, toiling in the hundreds of archival boxes that now contain the Jones papers, donated, most fortunately, to the university by Jones's two sons. This, then, is a work of scholarship, measured, diligent, careful, and informed by Hansen's own deep knowledge of the game.Jones' career was no joy ride. He was an atrocious businessman and in his later years that fault played a major role. Moreover, despite his efforts to pass his firm off intact to his two sons, Robert Trent, Jr., and Rees, these two etched out their own career paths and disagreed intensely with one another on numerous occasions. Hansen sugar-coats none of this, and it is to the sons' credit that they let a real historian write this book unimpeded. Readers can consult the "Note on Source," a fascinating essay by itself to learn how Hansen met the Jones boys and won their trust.There are many other books on golf course architecture, of course, and some few intended for the general public. "A Difficult Par" should join this select group. It can hold its own without asking for any strokes.

I learned so much about what it takes to design a golf course from this book - grasses, terrain, tees, greens, the rough, architecture, engineering, drainage, and terrific business savvy. Robert Trent Jones Sr had incredible determination to get his dream job - making contacts, getting involved in the industry, learning from mentors, persuading Cornell to accept him and selling his ideas.There's details on specific courses - who knew that some lava could be ground to make a thin layer of soil for Mauna Kea's golf course in Hawaii, and some could not - or that guests would get winded at altitude at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs if the course was badly routed. There's plenty about Robert Trent Jones' approach to design - where to put the bunkers, how to do the plans, how to get people to implement the plans.The book has details on Robert Trent Jones two sons (disclaimer: it was seeing Robert Trent Jones II carrying the book that made my buy it) and his wife. There's a lesson for families and family businesses on making corporate structures crystal clear.The author sets a good pace, with footnotes in the text and a list of golf courses with dates at the end. There are also photos. The book should be of interest to anyone who likes business biographies and/or golf.

Although Jones's work has fallen out of favor lately, surpassed by the new courses of the "minimalist" era, he played an important role in the history of course design and Hansen brings Jones's reputation back into the discussion after he has been been looked down on for so many years. This alone makes it a worthy effort. Hansen's best work is in areas that are lesser known, in particular the creation of the secretive Vidauban course near the French Riviera, which nearly bankrupted Jones. The original concept at Vidauban was to build three golf courses, 3,000 condominiums and two large hotels. Hansen also describes in detail the complicated (and tense) relationships among Jones and his sons Rees and Robert Jr. Another interesting story Hansen relates is the fact that Jones was present at a Coup d’état attempt on the King of Morocco, who he designed the Royal Dar Es Salaam course for. While he was on the property armed soldiers starting shooting at the palace and captured the King for a period of time. Jones was held by the armed captors during the harrowing event. One star detracted for too much detail in places, but well written and interesting.

Just passed the exam and after getting the positive result, I feel like I should review this book as a study material. This book really works perfect for self-studying in passing the CCSK exam, so my honest & positive recommendation will be with this book. This book may make you feel big time read but, it will walk you step by step to give you a great chance at passing your exam smoothly.

Not nearly enough information to help one pass the CCSK certification.

Not sure how this gets 5 stars unless i have a different book shipped.This is more or less an index or bulleted summary of 50+ pages in font size 20 maybe. Not sure how reading this can help you pass the CCSK exam. and for the number of pages - it is ridiculously priced.

Do not purchase this product. This is not worth the money as there are grammatical errors and Microsoft formatting is evident throughout the book.Pay the $15 to have Staples print the Security Guidance for you instead.

Great story. Love that it is about a real life situation. Very fast read. Seems as though it’s geared toward children though, which I did not realize. I feel this could have been a longer book for adults and gone into more detail. Very sad to find out Heather Lott Goodwin’s son passed away in an accident and there was a VERY small backpage vague write up of this. Instead of children’s illustrations; real life photos of the horse, family, and of Katrina situation would have been more relevant.I do also have to caution that the author however has somethings backwards and in correct in the horse world. There is a statement on page 38 “A Paint is a breed, a specific stock type horse that can only be registered if both parents are registered with the American Paint Horse association.” This is not entirely true. Paint horses can also be registered if they have an American Quarter Horse parent or parents and a Paint horse can also have a thoroughbred parent and be registered. They have to meet the color qualifications first. My reccomendation on this specific write up is don’t bother if you are looking to learn something about Paint horses. The author should have done a more through job of reaserching the subject before writing about it.This story seems to me the writer slapped together a short story and tried to pass it off as a book. I would love to see an adult version of this Horse and his family put into a book that someone takes the time to write out well. The story line is great and the happenings of hurricane Katrina are eye opening.This book was a waste of the $7.99 for 95 pages long and a lack of detail.

I wondered during Katrina, all the way out here in California, how in the heck people with livestock were managing such a catastrophic disaster, and this book answered my questions. It wasn't manageable on any level, and horrible things happened to people and horses. I couldn't put this book down, it grabbed me from the very beginning since our Hero Gunner had the same coltish bad boy personality as our three year old Morgan has now, including the one blue eye. (They aren't just for paint horses anymore!) I have also showed paints and pintos back in the day, so I related so much to the story of Gunner and his family. Gut wrenching story, and tears flowed--- An unforgetable story....

This is a fast easy read, not to mention a true story. We all knew of the destruction from Hurricane Katrina but never heard many of the stories about how it affected the animals. In this story the reader follows Gunner from the time he is brought to their home until he competes in a world championship. I grew up around horses and believe me, each has their own personality. I liked how she related the personality of Gunner.

I had the thrill of seeing Gunner in action and he really amazed me. The physical ability and awesome beauty of this horse was captivating. I never really even noticed his ears he was so good. This is a really good book and you get to know this wonderful horse better.

The story of Gunner and his owner was very touching. The author added funny, tragic, and heartwarming incidents. I loved it. I just wished that more details were not written about. It was very short.

As a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the time of Hurricane Katrina and one who suffered the loss of our home, I was very interested in reading this story. I loved the horse, the family and the story. Though a sad and tragic ending, it was a good story full of redemption.

Great story for a pre-teen or early teenage. Would be good if reader were familiar with terminology dealing with horses and horse training facilities.

I got into a jag of reading real-life horse stories, and this book really scratched that itch. Gunner had a unique intelligence and personality that no other horse I'd read about exhibited. I especially loved that Gunner saved the owners son from a couple of dangerous situations, almost like Lassie. Fun read.

This book is one of a kind and absolutely incredible. I'm so glad i found it. Beautiful, devotional, comforting, and deep for children and adults alike.

The images are different from others I've seen so it was a nice addition to my collection.My friends are interested in this book so I'll be taking it to a group meeting in the near future.

This book is one to offer to organized religion and spirituality. Craighead devoted 14 years of her life as a Catholic nun and yet had unconventional dreams and visions of the feminine face of God. Her work is inspiring, educational and visionary. A must for any art lover, goddess worshiper or individual who is trying to think outside the box.
