This is an excellent primer on oil for people who want to be oil-literate. It's a 2017 update of a book whose first edition was published in 2008.Here's what the book covers.- Oil's uses and benefits.- What oil is, how it's found, and where it's been found.- How oil is produced, transported and processed.- Oil economics and politics.- Oil-related social and environmental issues.- Oil-related energy security issues.- How long oil will last. There are 28 helpful charts and diagrams, many excellent sidebar essays, and 4 appendices. Highly recommended.
Everything one needs to know about the basic composition, formation, refining, and transportation of oil is found in this book. Grounded in scientific fact, Smil lays it all out here. Definitely worth the read!
Having frequented a nummer og Peak oil former websites, I found this book to be a fresh perspective. I gave it a five star rating despite finding one error, it says in one place that an Abrahams tank runs on kerosene and in another that it runs on gasoline.
Just finished this book and it was outstanding. If you have interest in oil or fossil fuels it is a must-read.

Oil: A beginner's Guide gives an overview of the world's most important traded energy. Vaclav Smil is a world expert on energy and its role in civilization and has written an overview of oil, its history of use, its chemistry, economics and future. It is a combination of introductory and highly specific depending on the subject matter and thus the book isn't entirely for the beginner for some of the parts. It is probably more appropriate to consider this book part introductory, part reference. But nonetheless it is approachable. The book is split into 5 chapters. The first details the history of oil use and how it went from the margin to the center of importance in society's use. The author describes the geographies of primary oil discovery as well as early economics of the oil industry. The author discusses the benefits and burdens of the subject and in particular the externalities associated with oil and its use. The author details the exponential growth of oil demand in correspondence to its use in the auto industry and the bifurcated demand from oil and diesel both geographically as well as related to vehicle type. The history of oil boom busts, geopolitics and evolution of oligopolies is discussed and one gets a sense of how the current landscape for both supply and demand have evolved. The author then gets in to oil and its chemistry. There is a lot of technical discussion which is articulated in compact form with industry terminology. I found this part rather opaque and poorly communicated though I would say that I'm sure it serves as a decent quick reference for the already informed. The author discusses the 2 theories of where oil originates from and leans towards the Western rather than Russian theory. The author discusses the different types of oils and their properties as the term is far broader than people might initially think. The author then moves on to the business of oil exploration. The author spends time on discussing the engineering innovation that led to much greater efficiency in oil exploration. The chapter focuses on modern as well as historic methods used for wild catting and the current techniques of how engineer's map oil well flows is discussed leaving the reader quite impressed. The author spends another chapter on the infrastructure associated with the oil business. In particular he spends time on oil tankers as well as pipeline. The costs involved in transportation are discussed as well as their proportion used in the process of transportation. Metrics like Energy returned on energy invested are used when discussing transportation costs of fuels. Nonetheless the infrastructure for oil is absolutely essential in facilitating the supply chain. The author discusses the geographic chokeholds associated with oil transportation and their potential to disrupt global supply chains. The author also spends time on refining; its processes, its complexity and the various forms of distillation. The author finally moves on to oil supply projections. The fear of peak oil is always in the background at best and foreground at worst but the practical oil supply known to humanity has marched up. As a scarce non-renewable resource the finiteness of oil drives concern about sustainability. But practically our supply is largely unbounded and human ingenuity has the ability to continue to find new deposits as well as improve other technologies as price signals have hit the system. As a consequence the author largely dismisses peak oil concerns.Oil - A Beginners guide is an informative though largely dull reading. I far prefer the other of the author's works. Nonetheless for an introduction to oil as a commodity and its history as well as the chemistry, economics and engineering, this book provides a reasonable background. That being said I would also claim that if one is very interested reading "The Quest" as well as "Oil 101" is a better combination than reading this book. But all in all it is still worthwhile.
