I have read many books about the DRC and this is one of those gems that give you little stories how life was then just after independence. It's the view of an outsider not from a Congolese but still a good story.

CONGO TALES, Fred Hunter's memoirs of his USIS posting there in the early 60's, is divided into seven tales which I savored over three days. Each one is a little gem.The first six each depict aspects of Bukavu through vivid characters: Paul Wemboyendja, the all-round Congolese assistant, ladies' man and wild driver on often treacherous roads; Miss Hoffman, an American missionary who's given her life to back country orphans; Dr. Keppler, a grey-tweed academic from NYC who is liberated by Africa into her true self. The story of the local king Mwami and his encounter with the narrator and a pushy U.S. journalist named Mark Stern has a particularly nice touch: the narrator shifts into an account of what was most likely going on with Mwami while he and Stern were cooling their heels. And then there's Charley, partner, along with Paul, in a mad venture to see animals and a poignant Belgian couple, the DeMuncks, parents of Murielle whom the narrator has been in love with. The last story embraces all of these points of view, a moving farewell to the narrator's African USIS posting.I particularly enjoyed Hunter's beautiful descriptions of Africa, which he loves, and his adoption of the Congolese view of time and much else. We root for the narrator to see his share of animals before he has to leave. The narrator has a compelling voice, personal and yet more, rather like an innocent abroad dealing with the effects of Belgian colonialism. He shows the American approach to the Congo without editorializing.I highly recommend this book. It creates powerful and sympathetic images of the Congo of 1962-64 and shows how the narrator's experience there affected his future.Jinny Webber, author of THE SECRET PLAYER[...]

This is a gnarly little book with a wonderful lineup of marginally sane people (in Africa!) with just enough oddness, depth and danger to allow the author to bring people and place alive from page to page . . . Loved Helen Hoffman, wanted to twist Stern's nose and hear him yell, and sort of admired Paul W. for his sheer presence as a sex-driven misfit with no future . . .And all the authorities took themselves too seriously, and the dangers the author and them encountered were aptly described . . .> Two ingredients I missed: more of the personal feelings of the young author (after all it was his first adventure in responsibility), and a description of the film truck as it drove here and there through the adventure, greeted by villagers and kids with glee, and sought after by Paul W. for liaisons, etc. Made to be the unforgettable visual anchor of the story, it will have the impact of Mr. Hulot's car in the film "Hulot's Holiday" as it will be transfigured in your character driven film to be released--rumor has it--sometime in 2015, 2016???? BY DAVID HOLMSTROM

This is really a delightful story which is full of adventure and excitement.I highly recommend it. Where else would you find such a true story, written so well, in such an engaging way?

This short memoir is a delight to read -- crisp, easy, insightful accounts that make you feel like you are actually watching the experience unfold. You have a precious gift, Fred Hunter, and have had some incredible around-the-world experiences; thank you for sharing them!M. Loster
