Edit: I'm changing my rating to 3 stars, as I feel a 2 star rating for writing of this caliber is uncharitable. My personal enjoyment of the material is more on a 2 star level, however.Where to start? Positives, I suppose.- The writing is tight. No overlong exposition or unnecessary detail, prose is average or slightly better. Editing is quite a large step up from most self-pubs.- Characters are well drawn and very distinct, though virtually zero development occurs (more on that later). Many self-pub writers have difficulty writing easily distinguishable characters. Not so, in this case.- There was an air of mystery about the primary characters. The book is written from three distinct POVs, and each time we get a little bit of info on their reactions and motivations, but it’s only enough to give a glimpse of who they really are (I thought – more on this later). There are hints of rich backstory to flesh out each character.- The opening really grabbed me – legendary sword of unknown power and its mysterious wielder pairing up with a powerful undercover sorceress,Unfortunately, after the first 30-40% of the book, none of the promise that seemed so rich early in was delivered upon. The cons started to pile up, and never really stopped mounting for me:- The magic system is neat, but execution is flawed; there’s very little consistency. Some characters need auditory cues to “cast”, some don’t, some need gestures, some don’t. Each person is supposed to be bounded by affinity for a limited number of “dominions” (e.g. dreams, knowledge, metal, fire, etc), but the author plays extremely fast and loose with what can be done with each of these. It really seems that he made the system up, then just allowed the various characters to do whatever they tried to do with the only limit being how powerful they were within their domain.- The characters are extremely flat and uninteresting. There was only the barest hint of character development. It took a while to find out that they really don’t have much depth. In the end, they’re pretty much caricatures more than they are characters.Taelien is kind, gregarious, chivalrous and dumb. He acts like a complete child and this never changes. Other characters view him this way, and it fits because that’s pretty much exactly what he is. A very powerful child, but a child nonetheless. He takes his cues from Lydia throughout the book, and is pretty much powerless to act with any autonomy whatsoever.Lydia is an overbearing, condescending, arrogant bully who feels it’s her right to impose her will on others wherever she goes. The character of Moiraine in WoT fits her pretty much like a glove…except when you realize that that’s completely ridiculous because she’s about 20, and Moiraine is supposed to be over 70 or something. She thinks of (and actually refers to) Taelien as a child and mothers him the entire way through the book. She acts in a similar manner to pretty much anyone else. Some of this can be explained away when she needs to be in her frosty court sorceress persona, but early in the book she reflects on the great disparity between her undercover “ice queen” persona, and her natural, more friendly and compassionate self. Unfortunately this is just fluff, because we see only the tiniest bit of evidence that she might not actually be the former through and through. She’s calculating and thoughtful, but mostly to no real effect. She’s often afflicted with analysis paralysis, and progress pretty much just falls into her lap.Jonan was full of potential. Many reviewers called him the rogue. The funny, fun-loving sidekick. Somewhat appropriate, but his character is very similar to Lydia (intelligent and calculating, distrustful) excepting the fact that he pretty much acts like a doormat.- Characters go through the story helping others and doing things for completely inexplicable reasons. Taelien gets thrown in prison in the beginning for some reason completely unknown to him. Lydia helps break him out, and for some reason he continues to follow her like a puppy at her vague agreement to help him with his quest to find out more about himself. Now, if I had a clear goal, like find some guy (who I’ve been told can help me figure out my lineage and birthright), unless somebody or something is going to imminently help me get at this goal, I’m going to part ways from it. Instead, he gets distracted *constantly* with what I refer to as “side quests”. He’s helping a cause that he doesn’t even appear to have a strong moral reason to support. Jonan does much the same. For some reason Jonan bands together with these two people (Lydia and Taelien) that assaulted him, took him prisoner, and interrogated him, despite the fact that their ideologies are ostensibly at ends with one another. What? Later, another character attacks him by breaking into his home and smashing valuable belongings critical to his magic, and he just shrugs it off and offers to assist her for some reason. Again, what? This kind of behavior is everywhere too.- The pace of the book is worse than glacial. I read hundreds of pages of idle talk or inner monologue with no meaningful activity whatsoever. The vast bulk of the book covers discussions that occur in a matter of moments, much of it being an inner monologue from the current POV character. Eventually it just feels like a lot of churn for no reason.- The world building seemed flat. It surprised me that so many reviewers felt that this was a strong point of the novel. Then again, I categorize magic system as just that, and not related necessarily to world building. World building - to me - tells the story of the people, their cultures, their philosophy, their politics, their technological maturity, their regions and regional disputes, their resources, and so forth. I feel this novel did almost none of that. The only sense I got that the nations were different at all was the fact that they worshiped different gods. I couldn’t get a sense that there was any differentiation of ethnicities within the races (if there even were), and even the races were only described in the broadest terms.Overall, the book just felt dull and uninteresting, and I didn't identify with the characters one bit. I was very disappointed since it got rather good reviews and the beginning really grabbed me. I won’t be reading the second.

"Certainty in the face of variables is a sign of insanity."I loved this as much as I didn’t, which is why it fell into my LIKED vs. my LOVED rating. I felt like a pendulum trying to decide, but in the end there were a few more negatives than positives. But it didn’t get close to my INDIFFERENT rating, so that should say how much I liked it.I couldn’t really summarize this as the story revolves around three characters all on their own mission that ended up overlapping one other. I’m afraid if I tried I’d accidentally give something away. So the book blurb is going to have to do.The world was nicely developed, in my opinion. I never felt cheated. Matter of fact, in the beginning there’s a lot thrown at you. And I never felt like it let up. Not in a cool way, but in a let’s-get-all-this-out-now way. Normally I can go along with info dumps when it’s worked into a dialog. That happened in a lot of places, but it was sooooo long that I ended up skipping, hoping I’d understand later. I did, so yay me and yay to Rowe for keeping it clear. The world, however, never came close to the amount we learned about the magic system. Some people are going to love it. For me—and keep in mind that I love love love magic—it was too much. Much like the world building, it felt long-winded and overcomplicated. I skimmed, and I fear I payed a price for that. I think if i would have been patient, some of it could have been more entertaining.I liked the writing for the most part. Action scenes were incredible. I had a clear picture of what was happening. Those scenes were the reason this didn’t get a lower rating. They were really nifty, particularly those with Taelien. There were some typos, enough that I noticed by not enough to ruin the book for me.Now, the reason I was enjoying this so much was the characters. Taelien was a badass, and his magic was by far my favorite. Manipulating metal might sound boring, but Rowe made it fun. Super fun! Taelien's got a lot to find out about himself, and he truly wants to be a good person. He’s an easy character to root for, especially with his adventurous personality and slightly blind bravery. Our heroine, Lydia, was nicely gifted, but her magical ability of gaining knowledge about stuff just wasn’t as enthralling as magic used in a fight. Even so, she was a tough gal, collected, curious, and strong in her own right. Never a damsel in distress. Our other protagonist, Jonan, used sight magic—making himself invisible, looking through mirrors, and so forth. I never got as good of a feel for him as I did the other two. I could never quite peg his intentions.Overall, I’d recommend this to those that like a traditional upbeat fantasy. It’s short and fun. Because of Taelien I’ll be picking up the second book. I’m curious about his story and where he’ll end up.

I'll admit this one took a while to get into, since the opening chapters were very dialogue-heavy. The book also gives a lot of insight into what is happening in the characters heads, which took a bit of getting used to. However, once the book got going, I found myself really appreciating the detailed thoughts, since the characters are very logical and I love the "rationalist" genre. After the first few chapters, I was hooked (~30% on my kindle). The magic system is pretty great. I'm a fan of hard magic systems, and there are detailed rules, limitations, and costs to the magic in this book. I really appreciated the diversity of the magic, as well. As much as I love Sanderson's magic systems, sometimes they are fairly limited. Forging Divinity has magic of all types: physical, elemental, healing, knowledge, illusion, etc.The worldbuilding is also great. Godhood can be sold to the highest bidder? Awesome. Multiple conspiracies, a looming war, original races that are tied into the magic system? Even better. The characters are good as well, though not as strong as the worldbuilding. Each of the three main characters has access to different magic types, has their own hidden agendas that you slowly learn about, and distinct personalities. One is overly analytical about everything, one is a hotheaded warrior, and one is a secretive spy who relies on illusions instead of direct magics.Overall, the book was a slow start but a great read. I've bought the second and am looking forward to reading it in the near future. I might have to put the sequel off for a bit, because once I hit the 30% mark of this one I pretty much couldn't put it down (so much for being productive this week).

#993,565 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have read many books about the DRC and this is one of those gems that give you little stories how life was then just after independence. It's the view of an outsider not from a Congolese but still a good story.

CONGO TALES, Fred Hunter's memoirs of his USIS posting there in the early 60's, is divided into seven tales which I savored over three days. Each one is a little gem.The first six each depict aspects of Bukavu through vivid characters: Paul Wemboyendja, the all-round Congolese assistant, ladies' man and wild driver on often treacherous roads; Miss Hoffman, an American missionary who's given her life to back country orphans; Dr. Keppler, a grey-tweed academic from NYC who is liberated by Africa into her true self. The story of the local king Mwami and his encounter with the narrator and a pushy U.S. journalist named Mark Stern has a particularly nice touch: the narrator shifts into an account of what was most likely going on with Mwami while he and Stern were cooling their heels. And then there's Charley, partner, along with Paul, in a mad venture to see animals and a poignant Belgian couple, the DeMuncks, parents of Murielle whom the narrator has been in love with. The last story embraces all of these points of view, a moving farewell to the narrator's African USIS posting.I particularly enjoyed Hunter's beautiful descriptions of Africa, which he loves, and his adoption of the Congolese view of time and much else. We root for the narrator to see his share of animals before he has to leave. The narrator has a compelling voice, personal and yet more, rather like an innocent abroad dealing with the effects of Belgian colonialism. He shows the American approach to the Congo without editorializing.I highly recommend this book. It creates powerful and sympathetic images of the Congo of 1962-64 and shows how the narrator's experience there affected his future.Jinny Webber, author of THE SECRET PLAYER[...]

This is a gnarly little book with a wonderful lineup of marginally sane people (in Africa!) with just enough oddness, depth and danger to allow the author to bring people and place alive from page to page . . . Loved Helen Hoffman, wanted to twist Stern's nose and hear him yell, and sort of admired Paul W. for his sheer presence as a sex-driven misfit with no future . . .And all the authorities took themselves too seriously, and the dangers the author and them encountered were aptly described . . .> Two ingredients I missed: more of the personal feelings of the young author (after all it was his first adventure in responsibility), and a description of the film truck as it drove here and there through the adventure, greeted by villagers and kids with glee, and sought after by Paul W. for liaisons, etc. Made to be the unforgettable visual anchor of the story, it will have the impact of Mr. Hulot's car in the film "Hulot's Holiday" as it will be transfigured in your character driven film to be released--rumor has it--sometime in 2015, 2016???? BY DAVID HOLMSTROM

This is really a delightful story which is full of adventure and excitement.I highly recommend it. Where else would you find such a true story, written so well, in such an engaging way?

This short memoir is a delight to read -- crisp, easy, insightful accounts that make you feel like you are actually watching the experience unfold. You have a precious gift, Fred Hunter, and have had some incredible around-the-world experiences; thank you for sharing them!M. Loster

"This is a pastoral letter from a sinner to sinners, composed with gracious humility. Above all The Stain that Stays is biblical. John Armstrong has done his homework. It deserves a wide reading by pastors, denomination leaders, church elders, and all who love the church." (R. Kent Hughes ~ Senior Pastor Emeritus, College Church, Wheaton, Illinois)"This book is a needed corrective to the growing trend to restore fallen ministers into pastoral leadership. Whether one agrees with all John Armstrong's conclusions, he makes a case that desperately needs to be heard." (Erwin Lutzer ~ Senior Pastor, Moody Church, Chicago, Illinois)"Armstrong has considered the issue in Biblical, theological, and historical terms. He has left no stone unturned and yet he has thrown no stones at fallen brothers. The book reflects a properly pastoral tone and a broken heart." (R. Albert Mohler ~ President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)'As the epidemic of moral failure among church leaders shows signs of worsening, the church must carefully re-examine some hard questions in the clear light of scripture. John Armstrong has done this, and here he offers a thoughtful, biblical response - surely the finest book to date on this difficult subject.' (John MacArthur ~ President, The MasterÂ’s University and Seminary and Pastor-Teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, California)'The lack of serious self-criticism and sustained biblical analysis on this issue plagues the Christian house. This book by John Armstrong takes a sober look at this problem and endeavours to shake us into something radical - that is to engage the Bible obediently.' (Tom J. Nettles ~ Former Senior Professor of Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)'Eschewing both legalism and apathy, Armstrong points a biblical way forward to protecting God's sheep and recovering fallen shepherds...he has provided us with an extremely valuable, wise and balanced discussion.' (Michael Horton ~ J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California, Escondido, California)

The book is part of a library collection of books for church officers on Church Discipline at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C.

This book is an extended answer to the question, "What now?" that invariably arises when a ministry leader falls into serious sexual sin. Armstrong systematically examines the kind of answers that are common in the modern ministry setting and critiques them in comparison to scripture. He then looks at this historical approaches to this question in the church fathers, the Reformers, and the American Puritans. He concludes with advice as to what he sees as the way forward. His thesis, carefully argued throughout the book, is basically expressed in the title: sexual sin permanently disables a minister for any public ministerial duties. This is an excellent volume: humble, sober, earnest, cautious, but full of heartfelt conviction. Armstrong is operating outside of explicit scriptural command, and his understanding of that truth makes him generous toward those who work through the biblical data and come to different conclusions (most notably, Tim Lahaye's book), but that doesn't blunt the edge of his own arguments. He forcefully expresses the aberrance within the life of the church of the current indulgent attitude toward fallen leaders, and his historical and biblical analysis is convincing.

Fantastic book! My daughter is a Seventh Grader and a bit older than the recommended age of "8-12", but I think that older readers might get even more out of the rich material in this book. The story paints a vivid picture of a small town that could stand for many in the U.S., and manages to convey the living conditions, attitudes, and historical circumstances of two historical time periods. Immigration, working conditions, class differences, economic hardship, drought, and community spirit are all addressed in an amazingly engaging story line. The center stage goes to love, kinship of all kinds, friendship, and understanding. Once the characters overcome their isolation into ethnic groups and find their common humanity, they form a community that is more than the sum of its parts, just like the USA (in my opinion as an adult European immigrant to this country.) A true insight into the famed "melting pot" of America, showing its challenges and triumphs.Once my daughter was done with the book, my husband and I devoured it. We couldn't put it down! It was a great chance to talk to our daughter about what we would call "Americana" of earlier time periods, as older cultural contributions relate to the story line: Burl Ives and his song "The Big Rock Candy Mountain", and Tennessee Ernie Ford's "16 tons." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I finished this book over spring break, and thoroughly enjoyed both the story and the writing. Vanderpool uses a narration technique that I enjoy: two different narrators from two different eras telling two different stories about the same place and theme. The book is set in late-Depression-Dust Bowl Kansas and the narrator is a twelve-thirteen year-old girl exploring a town that her father had lived in. The book then moves back to 1917 and the narration is in third person. The tale then jumps back and forth between 1937 and 1917-1918, both plots advancing with clues about possible connections. The writing is solid, the characters believable, and the story is engaging. Vanderpool develops her characters through dialogue and action and less through direct description. The book is aimed at young adults, but the content matter and writing easily engages adults. All in all, an excellent read!

Abilene Tucker, a twelve-year-old girl, who has lived most of the life on the move with her father, Gideon, arrives in Manifest, Kansas, her father's 'home town' very unsure about whether she wants to be there. While checking out the former saloon/church that she will be living in, she discovers a hiding place under the floorboards in her room. Inside the hiding place is an old cigar box containing some letters and a few odd objects of seemingly no value. When Sister Redempta, the local school teacher and midwife, assigns Abilene to write a story, due in the fall, Abilene has a hard time believing that this town is any different than the dozens of other towns she has past through. She soon learns differently. A run-in with the local Hungarian 'diviner' leads Abilene eighteen years into the town's past and into the life of a young boy named Jinx and his friend, Ned as well as a town full of people each with their own story to tell. A powerful story about the power of a story to connect people despite all their differences. This book integrates present and past as smoothly as any I've ever read. In fact, the characters from the past almost overshadow the characters in the present. Almost, but not quite. This is very much Abilene's story about family and hope and community. The main theme, I felt, was about how human beings often make assumptions that prove to be incorrect and only by taking the time to look deeper can we truly get to know each other. The writing becomes secondary to the journey the reader makes, hoping, like Abilene, to find a place called home. I find this book very much worthy of the Newbery Medal that it received.

It's often difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is that distinguishes a good book from a great one. It might be a spark of originality even if the book covers the same basic themes that have been covered countless times before. It might be a depth of character that makes fictional people seem like our own very real quirky, aggravating, but basically likable friends, family and neighbors. It might be a firm sense of place that feels real, a place where people actual might put down roots, a place that almost becomes a character itself. Or it might be - as in Clare Vanderpool's MOON OVER MANIFEST - a combination of all of the above plus much more. The story starts with young Abilene Tucker, a motherless girl sent by her father Gideon to stay in the Town of Manifest, Kansas while he pursues employment in Des Moines, Iowa. In her father's absence, Abilene realizes how little she really knows about Gideon. She hopes to fill that hole (and the matching hole in her heart) by "finding" him in Manifest, because she knows the town holds special connection for Gideon, although what that connection is seems to be awfully elusive. The first hopeful hint comes in the form of a box Abilene discovers beneath the floorboards in the room she occupies in Pastor Shady Howard's place - a place that is part saloon, part church. The box contains several trinkets and a package of letters from Private Ned Gillen to "Jinx". Abilene is a bit disappointed, as she thought the box might have been Gideon's. Nevertheless, along with newfound friends Lettie and Ruthann, she begins tracking down the various mysteries presented in the letters - starting with the identity of "The Rattler - and piecing together stories of Manifest's past through local residents and through reporter Hattie Mae's "News Auxiliary" articles from the year 1918. But the townspeople are a little - or a lot - closed-lipped. Even Shady is a bit slippery, and there's only so much to be learned from the brief news articles. It's not until Abilene finds herself on the "Path to Perdition" to Miss Sadie's Divining Parlor that she really begins to put the pieces together.Much to Abilene's dismay, Miss Sadie tells her the story of Jinx, not the story of Gideon. Despite herself, however, Abilene (and her friends) soon becomes hooked on the story of the mysterious, affable yet hapless youth who made his appearance in Manifest in 1918. The book alternates between Abilene narrating events of the present, Miss Sadie narrating events of 1918, clips from Hattie Mae's "News Auxiliary" and letters from Ned to Jinx, each new piece giving us tantalizing new pieces of the puzzle of the relationship between the two boys, the connection to the Town of Manifest, and the relevancy to her own life.Ms. Vanderpool has created a masterpiece of a narrative. The book is engaging from page one. Manifest is an enticing mystery - one that we want to peel back layer by layer and savor like a butter-soaked artichoke. Before the book opens, there is a list of characters - those from 1918 and those from 1936. From this list we learn that in 1918 Shady Howard was a saloon owner and bootlegger, and by 1936 he is Pastor Shady Howard, "still a little shady". From the beginning he is one of the most intriguing characters and perhaps the key to this town that is more than it appears to be on the outside. The story itself is a heartwarming tale full of hope, as the town comes together to loosen the stranglehold of greedy mine owner Arthur Devlin. It is also the story of the tragedy that corrupts that newfound solidarity. It is a tale of suspicion of outsiders and provincialism. It's a tale of love and loss. And it's a tale of the rekindling of hope that just one young girl can spark. While there are plenty of suspicions and accusations, there aren't any real villains to this story (with the possible exception of Arthur Devlin, but even he's just a businessman doing business), and there are no heroes. All the characters have their faults and warts, but deep down, they're just people, mostly decent people, just trying to make it in the world. It's only when they rise above their suspicions and fears that they become more than the sum of their parts. Their faults turn to assets and their decency rises to the fore. The realism of this book is also helped by the way Ms. Vanderpool weaves in actual historical events, including the "Great War" and the 1918 flu epidemic. All the elements, historical and fictional, weave together to create a truly satisfying tale complete with adventure, schemes, love, loss, tragedy, redemption and people you can love. You might just find yourself wanting to move to Manifest. Highly recommended for kids age 8 to 108.

This book really is instrumental in setting a groundwork and theoretical foundation for understanding memory and place. Particularly Michael Bowman's essay in this book along with the introduction by Dickinson, Ott, and Blair are the strongest of the bunch however the book is well worth the price. If you are purchasing this for a class, know the reading is accessible, and pay special attention to the introduction and observe their seamless writing style and outstanding organization of complex topics. I actually spoke with Dr. Blair last night and in her estimation much more scholarship can come out of writing about and studying places of public memory.

This is a "must read" for those who want a good, easy to read summary of the Theology of the Body presented by Pope John Paul II. Healy goes into enough detail that one can easily understand the premises behind JPII's theology. JPII's Theology of the Body, as a book, is a compilation of a series of his talks on this subject of human sexuality and true spousal union as mutual self-gifting. If you purchase the other book, you will find many repeats because each "talk" begins with a recap of the lecture before. Healy breaks this all down to the basics of JPII's lecture series and is an excellent companion to the large volume that includes the exact words of the Holy Father. Healy writes in simple language for even younger people to comprehend. This book emphasizes the value and sanctity of marriage and the gift of sexuality, as originally given to us by God outlined in Genesis. JPII continually refers to Genesis and "in the beginning," before the fall of humankind, and this is what we were created for---true spousal union, when man and woman truly become one with each other, and with the grace of God through the interaction with the Holy Spirit, a true sacramental marriage is possible. She mentions JPII's comments on objectification of the human body and how it has depleted our dignity as human beings. Overall, I recommend this book to those who are not theologians but to people who want to know more about the divine design of the human race and how sexuality is sacred when respected and treasured as a gift from God.

For a long time I wanted to read Theology of the Body. This should be the first book you get for learning and love what is in TOB. Wonderful, easy to read, easy to understand, takes into account all “ those hard issues” and explains them under the light of God’s love for humanity.

As a young, recently married Catholic, I have been introduced to Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body, but some of the literature can be quite intimidating. This is essentially an introduction to the Theology of the Body written as a study. I suppose it could be used for groups, but I have found it to be a great book for individual study, complete with Scripture passages, quesitons for reflection and spiritual exercises. You'll want to have a Bible handy while reading as well. I highly recommend this book for Catholics young and old, married or single. Actually, I recommend it to anyone, Catholic, Christian or not who is seeking the truth about human dignity. I have since given this book as a gift to my younger brother who recently married and to my parents who just celebrated their 40th anniversary. I want more people to know about Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body because it has changed my life and my marriage.

This book eloquently and coherently conveys the theology of the body from John Paul II's teachings in the context of Biblical and Roman Catholic teachings. Mary Healy demonstrates an intimate knowledge of the topic, as she skillfully presents some complex ideas. This teaching is rooted in Scripture and follows the course of the Pope's teachings.I approached this book thinking of it as a book on marriage. I discovered that it is much more than a book on marriage. It is a book for all people to learn God's truths about who we are as humans in physical bodies; our bodies are called the "sacrament of the person." This is certainly helpful for a better Biblical understanding of marriage, but it also helps us better understand being single or celibate. The chapters address the redemptive-salvation history of God's relationship with people-- our creation, fall, redemption, future glorification. Our bodies and relationships are addressed in this context of the revelation of God's love and grace. We are called to follow God in expressing self-giving love through our bodies as Christ did in his sacrifice. This book teaches how this might look in our lives. The reality of Christ's coming has changed our realities and responsibilites forever. We have been set free and charged to love as God loves. For the married person, the teaching shows that we are to love our spouses as Christ loves the church; in fact, Healy writes "The cross of marriage is its glory." And for the celibate person or single person, the teaching shows that God's love is sufficient and that we can commmit ourselves to him fully.I think the topics of the book are all substantiated by Scripture with the exception of the Roman Catholic teaching on contraception. To me, this is something that is permissable rather than something contrary to Scripture. I think at the very least the use of contraception is what the wider church would call adiaphora --something nonessential to salvation and not morally mandated for Christian ethics. We are called to live by faith and not put stumbling blocks before other Christians. Although I disagree with the teaching on this topic, I appreciated the writing and carefully thought out explanations.I recommend this book to all Christians, especially Roman Catholics who desire to learn the Pope's teachings better; however, in no way is the book's helpfulness limited to Roman Catholics.

Readable. Understandable. Maybe superficial but now I’m prepared to read the original , well, in English, and see what I’ve been missing.

Great book. Has lots of practical applications for individual or group study

Mary Healy is a wonderful writer. She speaks of St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body is a beautiful narrative style and makes something that is very dense, very comprehensible.

Great overview of St. John Paul II Theology of the Body. Healy is very practical and very easy to understand.

Strong as Sandow: How Eugen Sandow Became the Strongest Man on Earth

Review

The life of Eugen Sandow (1867–1925), a Victorian-era bodybuilding superstar dubbed “the Modern Hercules,” is rife with mystery. Not only did his family destroy his belongings after his death, but articles and books on Sandow are often contradictory. Tate (a former bodybuilder himself ) reconciles these challenges by telling the story as “Sandow would have wanted it told”—with drama and flair. This decision could have easily resulted in an over-the-top portrayal of the subject; instead, Tate’s chronological narrative portrays an ambitious, hardworking showman with a drive for excellence—from “feeble” boy to acrobat, strongman, fitness guru, and creator of the first organized bodybuilding contest. And although admiring of Sandow’s impressive physique and strength, Tate is skeptical of the man’s purported antics (such as defeating a lion). Tate argues that Sandow was more than just a strongman; that his attention to both mind and body inspired the people of his time—and can inspire people today—to devote “more attention to their own health.” The digital illustrations—rendered in a gentle, textured black outline housing a warm color palette—show an approachable version of the athlete. Additionally, decorative caption boxes and some stylized lettering (seen on marquees and banners) help develop a period feel. Back matter includes an afterword, exercise techniques, a bibliography, an author’s note, and quotation sources. A powerful pairing with Meghan McCarthy’s Strong Man and Nicolas Debon’s The Strongest Man in the World. —Horn Book STARRED REVIEWSparked by his own passion for bodybuilding and physical fitness, Tate recounts the story of Eugen Sandow (1867–1925) in this inspirational picture book. The biography begins during Sandow’s childhood in Prussia, where he used sports and exercise to develop from a frail, skinny child into a robust, physically active young man and later into a world-famous strongman in the United States, with his own successful business enterprise. The text progresses chronologically, with references to various geographic settings and specific historical events. Tate’s mixed-media illustrations feature characters, especially Sandow, with oversize, highly expressive faces. The muted colors are appropriate to the historical setting. The artwork is chock-full of humorous, cartoonish details that greatly enhance the story. In the afterword, Tate provides additional biographical information on both Sandow and himself. He includes a few simple exercises for kids and a well-developed bibliography. This title would be a good companion to Meghan McCarthy’s Strong Man: The Story of Charles Atlas, reinforcing the themes of physical fitness and the importance of healthy choices. VERDICT An excellent introduction to a historical figure that will appeal not only to children already interested in sports and fitness but also to those in need of encouragement.—School Library Journal STARRED REVIEWTate introduces his readers to one of the first international sports stars in a well-researched biography of bodybuilding strongman Eugen Sandow. Friedrich Wilhelm Müller began life in Prussia as a weak and sickly child who longed for activity. A boyhood trip to Italy changed Friedrich's life, when he learned about the gladiators of Rome and their belief in daily strenuous exercise. Tate explores Müller's life as a student, circus performer, and model as he grows (pun absolutely intended) into the professional strongman Eugen Sandow. Digitally created illustrations use dramatic grainy shadows that suggest the inky carbon smudges of old newspaper photos. As in many old newspapers, all the characters depicted in the story are white. Tate wisely introduces some diversity in the backmatter by showing a multiracial group of boys and girls as models for four simple exercises. The other strongmen that appear in the book present a range of physiques, a nicely designed if subtle hat tip to the idea that fitness can be reflected in different weights and sizes. Additional backmatter includes an afterword on Sandow's life, Tate's relationship with the sport of bodybuilding, and a bibliography that includes Web links when possible. The only thing that's missing is a timeline, a feature that is always appreciated. Readers will find parallels with Meghan McCarthy's picture-book biography of Charles Atlas, Strong Man (2007), but Tate's celebration of Eugen Sandow makes a solid addition to any biography section.—Kirkus Reviews"Strongest Man on Earth"? With competing reports, self-promoting hype, and Louis Cyr (of Debon's The Strongest Man in the World, BCCB 5/07) on the strongman show circuit, it's hard to award that title to Eugen Sandow with certainty. He is, however, considered the father of body-building, and he turned himself from a scrawny kid into a bundle of muscle. After an exhausting career as strongman, Sandow, no longer as bulky and buff as he was in his heyday, "launched the Great Competition," a men's body-building contest that assessed not only an impressive physique but also overall health and athleticism. While Louis Cyr and other muscle-flexing contemporaries have passed into the history and record books, Sandow lives on as the gold-plated statuette awarded annually to Mr. Olympia. The grunting, hefting, and posing are presented here with a liberal helping of humor, and if viewers aren't rolling on the floor over the early twentieth century body-builder's costumes, they will be over Sandow's own stint as a life model in an art studio. As engaging as Sandow's story is, endnotes command equal attention, particularly the historical follow-up in the afterword and tate's own body-building interests and experience (complete with photograph) in the author's note. Source notes, a bibliography, and suggestions for some simple strengthening exercises are also included. —BCCBAt the turn of the twentieth century, Englishman Eugen Sandow was known as the strongest man alive, a trailblazer in bodybuilding and fitness, and a personal trainer to King George V. Though his life story may not be the stuff of history textbooks, his experiences are a window to popular culture in the Victorian era and the emerging idea of celebrity. He was one of the first to inspire people to pay attention to their health and to be physically active long before it became a mainstream practice. He became a world-wide phenomenon by performing feats of strength in circuslike shows and hosting bodybuilding competitions for spectators. Both Tate's narrative and colorful illustrations reveal his own personal experience in the bodybuilding arena and his respect for Sandow's lifelong goal. Throughout his life, he perfected his physique and the larger-than-life persona that accompanied it, but Tate's measured biography doesn't shy away from the imperfect aspects of Sandow's personality. —Booklist Friedrich Wilhelm Müller loved athletics as a boy but "playing sports required a strong, healthy body" and Friedrich was skinny and frail. Though he was often "too sick to play," he remained undaunted by his physical restrictions and played sports, determined to be a healthy and strong person. As Friedrich grew older, his love of athletics never dimmed. Though his father wanted him to attend university and focus on a career, Friedrich could not ignore his drive to be active--he decided to join the circus. When circus life didn't work out for Friedrich, his journey toward being "the strongest man in the world" began in earnest.  He trained as a bodybuilder, changed his name to Eugen Sandow and soon became a professional strongman. With time, work and some (possibly slippery) performance tricks, Eugen gained world fame and launched the first organized bodybuilding contest, ever-so-humbly awarding the winner a statue of himself. Eugen Sandow's exercise and diet regimens are used to this day and the prize for the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition is still the (slightly updated) Sandow.Don Tate (Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions), who used to be a bodybuilder himself, treats the exceptional life of Eugen Sandow with appreciation and respect while making sure to note in the ample back matter that much of what people today know about Sandow came from the man himself--a man who constantly sought perfection and sometimes stretched the truth. Tate's biography of one of the first international sports stars is welcoming to the young reader with approachable text and rich digital illustrations. And, for the budding athlete, there is even a page that teaches different strength building exercises. —Shelf Awareness

My class loved this story. We used the exercises in the book for indoor PE!

Very well written

Loved learning about Eugen Sandow in STRONG AS SANDOW. Tate tells Sandow's story in a way that is not only factual, but inspirational. I also think the way Tate has illustrated this is fantastic. My personal favorite picture is the one with Sandow lifting the piano full of people on page 3!!
