Thomas J. Craughwell is author of more than two dozen books. Among them are Saints Behaving Badly (Doubleday, 2006), Saints Preserved: An Encyclopedia of Relics (Image, 2011), and Stealing Lincoln's Body(Harvard University Press, 2007), which was adapted into a History Channel documentary. His articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Inside the Vatican, and Our Sunday Visitor. I’ll keep this short. I really wanted to like the book. As a Catholic and someone who reads a lot of history, I thought the subject was interesting. As I got further into the book,I started seeing glaring inaccuracies.First, the United States did not enter WW1 because of the sinking of the Lusitania (1915). We entered the war because early in 1917 the Germans resumed unrestricted submarine warfare, resulting in further deaths of US citizens and our entry in April 1917. Also, The Zimmerman Telegraph didn’t help. Regarding the rest of the chapter on WW1, the timeline is all over the place and poorly written.Regarding Bastogne and General McAuliffe’s reply to the German commander, it was simply “Nuts”. What you quoted was said to his staff.That said, I digress, the book is about military chaplains.Regarding Father Capodanno, when he was killed he was not gunned down “as he ran to him”, the fallen medic, Corpsman Leal, but he made it to Leal. Sounds like I’m nitpicking but there is a difference. Both were killed by a MG 15 meters from their position. One account, Father Capodanno attempted to “shield” Leal from the MG that killed both of them.Regarding Father Ryan, Corporal Pace would not have carried an M-15 (the civilian model) rifle but the military version, the M-16.And finally, regarding where Father Vakoc received his initial medical care. Walter Reed Army Medical Center is in Bethesda Maryland, not Germany.I had high hopes for the book, great subject, inspirational. When I began catching these mistakes the book was ruined for me. If these were some of the mistakes I found, what did I miss? Worse, the author list sources at the end of the book but only cited two parts of the whole book. I hate to say it, skip this one. If you want to learn about military chaplains I suggest reading “Grunt Padre”, written by Daniel Mode and “The Miracle of Father Kapaun” by Travis Haying.To the author, do proper research, take your time and cite your material throughout the book. If you had done this it could have been what I had hope it would be.

Over the last few years I have read several books about Catholic Military Chaplains. It started with a recommendation of one book by a friend and has grown into a personal obsession. For two main reasons, first I find many if the stories inspirational, challenging, and encouraging. Second my son who is 10 has been saying for a few years that he will be a priest, and for the last year that he will be a military chaplain. This book was an amazing read, even as a Canadian reading the story s and histories about American Military chaplains was very moving. As can bee seen from the contents of this book below, this volume spans from the American Revolution to the current day war on terror.Foreword Introduction1 The American Revolution2 The War With Mexico: America's First Catholic Military Chaplains3 The Civil War4 The Spanish-American War5 World War I6 World War II7 The Korean War8 The Vietnam War9 The War on TerrorEditor's AfterwordBibliographyThe forward of this book opens with these words:"ROMAN Catholic priests serve in persona Christi. When it comes to military chaplains, however, many have been called to do just that. Men such as these are truly in the spiritual trenches."And Thomas Craughwell does an incredible job of giving us glimpses into the life, service, and at times ultimate sacrifice of these men. Craughwell himselfin the introduction sates:"This isn't a comprehensive history of American Catholic military chaplains. It's not a biographical dictionary. It was interesting as an Irish Canadian to see how many of the chaplains in this volume came from Canada, studies in Canada, or who's parents came from Canada. The same can be said for Ireland. This began with the first US Chaplain, who was "Father Louis Eustache Lotbiniere, a sixty-year-old French Canadian priest recruited by Benedict Arnold to serve Catholic troops in the Continental Army." The stories in this volume are very powerful, from a priest standing on a rock giving general absolution to soldiers at Gettysburg, to a pray for a change in weather that helped turn the Battle of the Bulge. To the witness of Kapaun and Capodanno this book is filled with stories that will amaze.I am not a chaplain, not a priest, and not in the military. But the stories in this book challenge my faith, they challenge me to be a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better friend, to have more faith and be more prayerful. This is not the first book I have read about chaplains, and it will not be the last, but I can state that it is an excellent read and I recommend it to students of history, Catholics of all ilk's and walks of life, and to anyone who would read stories of true heroism, valour, courage, and faith for that is what this book is filled with.

I think I'm addicted to scales. I don't know why but I just love flipping through these types of exercise books, dense with notes and accidentals and scales, and just staring at them. It's so aesthetically satisfying. And in the practice room I have to stop myself from just doing scales endlessly to work on other aspects of technique. What a problem, right? But anyways, even Trevor Wye's Practice Book omnibus isn't enough for my addiction, tons of free pdfs on IMSLP don't satisfy, so I picked this up. And it's great. Looks like it will keep me occupied forever with endless variations on scales, intervals, arpeggios, sequences, and so on. Right now, I've noticed a need to work on my third octave scales, and I know I could just mentally transpose my daily scales up an octave, but Lo and Behold there is a whole section dedicated to third octave scales here. It's much more satisfying playing the notes as they're written out. Something about all those ledger lines.It's true, most of the exercises are lifted verbatim from older sources, but he makes that clear. Some are unattributed but easily recognizable: his Section 2 Scales #7 #8 #9 are 99% the same as the famous Taffanel & Gaubert #1 #2 and #4. But again, he makes it clear that the purpose of this book is to compile all of these exercises into one volume. He gathers interesting exercises from Reichert, Maquarre, Boehm, and others. And in the case of the old French exercises, if not out-of-print they are often expensive and hard to find, so it's nice to have the content in a modern convenient edition. In addition there are plenty of his own original, interesting exercises and plenty of classic Wye commentary—hints on fingerings that improve intonation or facilitate speed are spread throughout and valuable. It's light on text, but Wye preaches elsewhere, so that's fine. It comes with a 'practice card' with some routine ideas and articulation variations, which I guess could be useful, but what would've made it really useful is printing it laminated so the student could dry-erase and re-use it.And the book is SPIRAL-BOUND, hallelujah. All music should come spiral-bound.Two points of note: (1) I don't think I've ever complained about music staff size but it's true, the whole book seems printed at 75% the standard size, like an Ossia. Two potential trouble areas are the resulting miniscule trill accidentals and quickly identifying extremely high (ledger) notes and some articulations, but since most of the exercises are scales and things you should be able to extrapolate it's not a huge problem. It is noticeable to this 28 y/o. (2) I wish there were more scale/chord annotations. For many of the scale and arpeggio exercises, you are wordlessly led through a dizzying 4-page, 32-staff exercise that changes accidentals/keys without any indication—all I want is for it to mention the key "C major" "Ab minor" etc. I know at an intermediate stage a musician should be able to recognize the keys. I might want to use the book in a cross-cutting way—quickly go through playing all the exercises in a problem key, for example, but I can't do that easily. For many of them he does indicate it, but many are not marked.

Totally awesome exercises for intermediate to advanced flutists!A blend of Trevor's own exercises and those of the "French school."Really great practice diary at the back which you can make your own Excel sheet of.If you're on the fence about whether to get it and have the spiral-bound books 1-6; yes it is sufficiently different,and totally worth buying. The notes aren't that small to read either, if you're worried about that.I can see that I will progress much faster by using the structure of this book and supplementing it with material from Books 1-6.Has interval studies and 3rd Octave studies to help with your high notes.Wish I had gotten it a lot earlier!

The exercises are terrific but the print is rather small. Exercises are challenging enough without needing to strain to see the music easily. Probably wouldn't purchase again if I knew the print was so small.

I've played the flute for 13 years, professionally for 5 of those, and have taught on-and-off throughout college. I was an All-State player and a music major for the first 2 years of college, but decided to pursue other options. This has become my absolute favorite flute practice book - I swear, it has everything. Couple this with the Trevor Wye complete set (5 books), a tuner and a metronome, and you're essentially set for life.

I bought this as a gift for my sister for Christmas. She's an experienced flute player playing since middle school and she wanted something to keep her playing even though she doesn't get to as much as she'd like. She said she liked the different music and exercises they have to keep her interest.

Add the Trevor Wye 'Omnibus' book to this one and the intermediate/advanced flutist will have enough technical exercises to last a lifetime! Great book!

I bought this book not really knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised! I use it almost daily and as a result of practicing the exercises in this book have noticed a lot of improvement in my playing. I recommend it for the library of every flutist!

Hope Survives is a dynamite read. Like the other books, it's also a short read. There's no let-up; the action blisters; the suspense is nuts. But not at the expense of solid character work. I cared about our crew, never mind that Madison does something incredibly stupid that puts her and Brianna in a dangerous situation that could've been - should've been - avoided. But, at least, her mom, Tracy Sloane, goes back to being the badass she was in the first book. I love how our battle-hardened characters now come across like a well-oiled machine when it comes to taking fools out. It reminds me of the cast of The Walking Dead circa Season 6 when they infiltrated what they thought was the Saviors' headquarters with such precision... but, of course, you know how that eventually turned out.This book also addresses a plot thread that had dangled for some time now, and it's to do with the cache of firearms our guys found in that gun-runner's muscle car back in, oh, I forget which book.In his afterword, the author mentions that he regards these nine books, collectively, as Season One. And that, for now, he's moving on to write more in his Nuclear Survival series. But he also mentions that he hasn't ruled out diving into a Season Two in After the EMP. My two cents is, there had better be a Season Two.

Yes, this is a great series to read. Lots of adventure and excitement. I love the strong characters and their ability to provide and protect themselves. Please continue to write more books in this series.

I started this book a little over an hour ago, and I just finished it. What a story. This is a roller coaster of a plot with characters to care about. What are you waiting for? Get a copy and get reading.

So many twists and turns but all my favorites pull through. Inventive plot turns keep one guessing. Who are the census takers? You can not stop yet.

I liked and enjoyed the books, all of them. I just don't like waiting solong between books. I read a lot, and it gets hard rememberingthe characters in the different books when there is such long waitingperiods. I have now switched to adding to my wish list until 6 or moreof the books are written in a series, especially when some books areonly 100-200 pages long ! It was still worth the read with the waiting.

Really love this series and can’t wait for the next book. It’s always interesting. The characters struggles seem real. Great writing!

Ram Dass is a wonderfull Personal Awareness Treasure..I had the pleasure of recommending "How can I Help" as a text for many years while I taught Inter and Interpersonal skills to many classes of people preparing for Rehab Counseling.and Special Education professions.A student recommended it to me more than twenty years ago.

Wonderful book. I had to read this for a grad class and this is the a book that I genuinely enjoy reading. Great insights with powerful stores.

My wife and I are both first person volunteers (Red Cross and St. Vincent de Paul Society) and we both have full time jobs. I thought that we know about helping until I read this book.Basically, it starts with a focus on knowing and understanding yourself, tossing in a little mediation practice for good measure. If you are helping to feel better about yourself, you are not really helping.Along the way there are, as other reviewers have said, inspirational stories that (well) inspire. It is a great balance of discussion and insight with stories about service.When I got to the section on burn-out, I presumed that I know the answers. I have survive burnout and read several really good books on the subject. Relax, step back, etc. This book has an entirely different perspective that I think is more useful than the other books.If you want to help people, and I presume if you are reading this book that you do, then you should consider reading this book. Thanks for helping.

This is one of the basic books of understanding the heart of human services. I have had three copies and miore that I have passed on to people who are struggling with where they are going....it so clearly speaks to the issues which are essential in the world of service with people with needs.

Clearly written, each pages resonates with wisdom. The obstacles one faces in serving are clearly addressed, and turned in to tools to learn about ourselves. This book is a wonderful examination of the helping process, helping profession and the psychology involved in helping.I highly recommend it.

I was looking for inspiration and found it--and joy as well. Some of the passages elicited--and sometimes still elicit--a strong mystical experience. Might not be true for everyone, but it is for me. Also, this is about the sixth or seventh copy I've bought; I have given the other copies away as gifts.

I'm trying to design medieval-inspired characters, and this works wonders!

It is full of detailed drawings of armor and weapons so in case you wish to know what something looks like without having to search all over the place for it, this book is worth it. It does not have a large amount of text explaining the weapons and armor though.

I bought this for my 10 year old grandson for Christmas. He is really interested in medieval history. He was so excited that he kept going back to this book between opening other presents.

Reproducedfrom a book originally published in Germany in 1903, this book contains more than a hundred pages of drawings of weapons, and particularily of armor from about 780 to the mid 1600's. The descriptions that go along with the illustrations are very well done and describe points that should be noted about the illustrations. These have been taken from the original German and specially translated for this edition.Covering such a long period of time, the development of styles of armor and the details of construction. I found the discussion on points like gauntlets, elbow protectors and the like to be more complete than anywhere else I've seen. They are based on drawings of the earliest equipment, burial monuments, and from the fifteenth century through the Thirty Years War on extant examples of plate armor.Very well done.

I love this book for so many reasons but mostly because it's getting the word out about what functional medicine is and how it IS the future of healthcare. If you read the stories in this book, you'll realize that every single one was a progression from chronic illness to vitality and wellness. Health coaches will be integral to this delivery model, giving patients who utilize them an edge to meeting their goals. If we're smart, adding nutrition professionals and health coaches to every single medical team would be a paradigm shift in the right direction. We need to switch from an illness based system to a wellness based system. This book covers all the important points about being a health coach, and why proper training is essential. Health coaches are a new key piece to solving our healthcare crisis. The patient centered healthcare of functional medicine can revolutionize our world. As a former critical care nurse, and a 10+ year cancer survivor, I speak from experience when I say Food Is Medicine.

This isn't as much a book as an advertisement for their program. I am an integrative RN health coach, so I am familiar with a lot of the information, however, even if I weren't, it never really tells anything. Lots of pages "Mary from Pennsylvania. Once I found coaching I made a six figure salary.....". "Beth from Montana. I love watching people get better......" Nothing to sink your teeth into. A huge disappointment.

Some good information although it seemed to be more about hiring the author to teach me to become a Medicine Coach than a resource of information. If I really want information, I felt the only way I'd get it would be to sign up for their course. I'm not looking for a new career at 71 years old.

Not much meat on the bones of what functional medicine is. It is mostly an advertisement for their training academy. Not worth the price.

I didn't find this very helpful; was essentially a collection of stories from coaches rather than a guide of how to be a coach. Very basic and not very informative.

I preordered this book not knowing that my son would spend a month training with the Cleveland Clinic center for functional medicine. I love the offer of the free consultation and I will pursue the training to be a coach.I believe this is the future of medicine, of health, of disease prevention and attenuation. Thank you for this most excellent book. I'll be spending a lot of time with this information.

I bought this to help me be a better outlook user at work, but honestly, I read the entire thing in one evening and found nothing helpful for me. I guess I'm not a dummy after all. That being said, it might be helpful for a complete novice at Outlook, but if you have used the program at all, you will dissatisfied with this book.

This has been a great purchase for the project management resource library at our company -- where we are trying to use the combination of Outlook and OneNote for agile project management. This book is technical enough for our IT folks and easy-to-understand for our non-technical employees. I really dislike the "for Dummies" -- but it is a great series with lots of helpful information.

Was hoping more for an approach that started me with the fundamentals and put the "meat on the bones". Not sure what to call the approach he used but it did not fit the way my brain works.

Oh how I pine for my old 2003 version. For my purposes, I not only find the program too complicated but this book as well.

Information is very useful while trying to use outlook full time.

It is very hard to understand if you are computer dumb. I used a bit of it, but it will now set on the book shelf.

This is a good quick way to get started with Outlook, but I purchased a longer, more complete "manual" in order to get more detail. I still haven't resolved the relationship between Outlook "Lite" (the version on Windows 8) with the full edition of Outlook. Maybe with more time I'll get there, but for now I'm not getting the benefit of the full version which I got by virtue of a subscription to Office 365.My other minor complaint about this book is the author's seeming bias against Microsoft. He is entitled to his opinion of MS, but it comes through pretty strongly in this book. Doesn't help build confidence in the product.
