I think I'm addicted to scales. I don't know why but I just love flipping through these types of exercise books, dense with notes and accidentals and scales, and just staring at them. It's so aesthetically satisfying. And in the practice room I have to stop myself from just doing scales endlessly to work on other aspects of technique. What a problem, right? But anyways, even Trevor Wye's Practice Book omnibus isn't enough for my addiction, tons of free pdfs on IMSLP don't satisfy, so I picked this up. And it's great. Looks like it will keep me occupied forever with endless variations on scales, intervals, arpeggios, sequences, and so on. Right now, I've noticed a need to work on my third octave scales, and I know I could just mentally transpose my daily scales up an octave, but Lo and Behold there is a whole section dedicated to third octave scales here. It's much more satisfying playing the notes as they're written out. Something about all those ledger lines.It's true, most of the exercises are lifted verbatim from older sources, but he makes that clear. Some are unattributed but easily recognizable: his Section 2 Scales #7 #8 #9 are 99% the same as the famous Taffanel & Gaubert #1 #2 and #4. But again, he makes it clear that the purpose of this book is to compile all of these exercises into one volume. He gathers interesting exercises from Reichert, Maquarre, Boehm, and others. And in the case of the old French exercises, if not out-of-print they are often expensive and hard to find, so it's nice to have the content in a modern convenient edition. In addition there are plenty of his own original, interesting exercises and plenty of classic Wye commentary—hints on fingerings that improve intonation or facilitate speed are spread throughout and valuable. It's light on text, but Wye preaches elsewhere, so that's fine. It comes with a 'practice card' with some routine ideas and articulation variations, which I guess could be useful, but what would've made it really useful is printing it laminated so the student could dry-erase and re-use it.And the book is SPIRAL-BOUND, hallelujah. All music should come spiral-bound.Two points of note: (1) I don't think I've ever complained about music staff size but it's true, the whole book seems printed at 75% the standard size, like an Ossia. Two potential trouble areas are the resulting miniscule trill accidentals and quickly identifying extremely high (ledger) notes and some articulations, but since most of the exercises are scales and things you should be able to extrapolate it's not a huge problem. It is noticeable to this 28 y/o. (2) I wish there were more scale/chord annotations. For many of the scale and arpeggio exercises, you are wordlessly led through a dizzying 4-page, 32-staff exercise that changes accidentals/keys without any indication—all I want is for it to mention the key "C major" "Ab minor" etc. I know at an intermediate stage a musician should be able to recognize the keys. I might want to use the book in a cross-cutting way—quickly go through playing all the exercises in a problem key, for example, but I can't do that easily. For many of them he does indicate it, but many are not marked.

Totally awesome exercises for intermediate to advanced flutists!A blend of Trevor's own exercises and those of the "French school."Really great practice diary at the back which you can make your own Excel sheet of.If you're on the fence about whether to get it and have the spiral-bound books 1-6; yes it is sufficiently different,and totally worth buying. The notes aren't that small to read either, if you're worried about that.I can see that I will progress much faster by using the structure of this book and supplementing it with material from Books 1-6.Has interval studies and 3rd Octave studies to help with your high notes.Wish I had gotten it a lot earlier!

The exercises are terrific but the print is rather small. Exercises are challenging enough without needing to strain to see the music easily. Probably wouldn't purchase again if I knew the print was so small.

I've played the flute for 13 years, professionally for 5 of those, and have taught on-and-off throughout college. I was an All-State player and a music major for the first 2 years of college, but decided to pursue other options. This has become my absolute favorite flute practice book - I swear, it has everything. Couple this with the Trevor Wye complete set (5 books), a tuner and a metronome, and you're essentially set for life.

I bought this as a gift for my sister for Christmas. She's an experienced flute player playing since middle school and she wanted something to keep her playing even though she doesn't get to as much as she'd like. She said she liked the different music and exercises they have to keep her interest.

Add the Trevor Wye 'Omnibus' book to this one and the intermediate/advanced flutist will have enough technical exercises to last a lifetime! Great book!

I bought this book not really knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised! I use it almost daily and as a result of practicing the exercises in this book have noticed a lot of improvement in my playing. I recommend it for the library of every flutist!

Our small band of survivors has settled into the rhythms of living in a harsher new world, or at least the northern California bits of it. It's the middle of winter now, so it's been tougher sledding, but they've been making do. Their recent alliance with the Jacobsons - the "villains" of the last book - is still a bit shaky, with some of our guys optimistic about making the partnership work while others are more cautious.But the Jacobsons may be the least of their problems. One day, Walter Sloane hears a transmission over the radio heralding the advent of the Unified States of America, and that help is on the way, with census takers coming soon to conduct assessments. They'll be escorted by armed military units, of course.Again, not everyone is on the same page about this news. Some are eager for the government, whatever government, to show up. Some aren't so keen to give up their newfound independence. Is it a spoiler to tell you that the radio transmission and the welcome/alarming news it brings will have to be addressed in a future book? Put a pin on that plot thread.Our group has a more immediate problem. A well-armed group of marauders has found the pharmacy that the Jacobsons have guarded so zealously. And there go the Sloanes and their friends and allies once again caught up in a series of heated battles.Harley Tate makes it look easy with his storytelling, makes it seem as if anyone can just pick up a pen and write page-turners. Hope Survives is a dynamite read. Like the other books, it's also a short read. There's no let-up; the action blisters; the suspense is nuts. But not at the expense of solid character work. I cared about our crew, never mind that Madison does something incredibly stupid that puts her and Brianna in a dangerous situation that could've been - should've been - avoided. But, at least, her mom, Tracy Sloane, goes back to being the badass she was in the first book. I love how our battle-hardened characters now come across like a well-oiled machine when it comes to taking fools out. It reminds me of the cast of The Walking Dead circa Season 6 when they infiltrated what they thought was the Saviors' headquarters with such precision... but, of course, you know how that eventually turned out.This book also addresses a plot thread that had dangled for some time now, and it's to do with the cache of firearms our guys found in that gun-runner's muscle car back in, oh, I forget which book.In his afterword, the author mentions that he regards these nine books, collectively, as Season One. And that, for now, he's moving on to write more in his Nuclear Survival series. But he also mentions that he hasn't ruled out diving into a Season Two in After the EMP. My two cents is, there had better be a Season Two.

Yes, this is a great series to read. Lots of adventure and excitement. I love the strong characters and their ability to provide and protect themselves. Please continue to write more books in this series.

I started this book a little over an hour ago, and I just finished it. What a story. This is a roller coaster of a plot with characters to care about. What are you waiting for? Get a copy and get reading.

So many twists and turns but all my favorites pull through. Inventive plot turns keep one guessing. Who are the census takers? You can not stop yet.

I liked and enjoyed the books, all of them. I just don't like waiting solong between books. I read a lot, and it gets hard rememberingthe characters in the different books when there is such long waitingperiods. I have now switched to adding to my wish list until 6 or moreof the books are written in a series, especially when some books areonly 100-200 pages long ! It was still worth the read with the waiting.

Really love this series and can’t wait for the next book. It’s always interesting. The characters struggles seem real. Great writing!

A classic. I give my copy away frequently, so this is a replacement for my own library. I own it digitally and in print form now. Its the sort of book I like to re-read now and then to refresh my attitude about helping and getting involved in the world.

Ram Dass is a wonderfull Personal Awareness Treasure..I had the pleasure of recommending "How can I Help" as a text for many years while I taught Inter and Interpersonal skills to many classes of people preparing for Rehab Counseling.and Special Education professions.A student recommended it to me more than twenty years ago.

Wonderful book. I had to read this for a grad class and this is the a book that I genuinely enjoy reading. Great insights with powerful stores.

My wife and I are both first person volunteers (Red Cross and St. Vincent de Paul Society) and we both have full time jobs. I thought that we know about helping until I read this book.Basically, it starts with a focus on knowing and understanding yourself, tossing in a little mediation practice for good measure. If you are helping to feel better about yourself, you are not really helping.Along the way there are, as other reviewers have said, inspirational stories that (well) inspire. It is a great balance of discussion and insight with stories about service.When I got to the section on burn-out, I presumed that I know the answers. I have survive burnout and read several really good books on the subject. Relax, step back, etc. This book has an entirely different perspective that I think is more useful than the other books.If you want to help people, and I presume if you are reading this book that you do, then you should consider reading this book. Thanks for helping.

Great book, would recommend to any social worker entering the field

This is one of the basic books of understanding the heart of human services. I have had three copies and miore that I have passed on to people who are struggling with where they are going....it so clearly speaks to the issues which are essential in the world of service with people with needs.

Clearly written, each pages resonates with wisdom. The obstacles one faces in serving are clearly addressed, and turned in to tools to learn about ourselves. This book is a wonderful examination of the helping process, helping profession and the psychology involved in helping.I highly recommend it.

I was looking for inspiration and found it--and joy as well. Some of the passages elicited--and sometimes still elicit--a strong mystical experience. Might not be true for everyone, but it is for me. Also, this is about the sixth or seventh copy I've bought; I have given the other copies away as gifts.

I'm trying to design medieval-inspired characters, and this works wonders!

It is full of detailed drawings of armor and weapons so in case you wish to know what something looks like without having to search all over the place for it, this book is worth it. It does not have a large amount of text explaining the weapons and armor though.

Very good reference book.

bought this for my nephew who is into ancient weapons, arms etc, he seems to really enjoy it. would buy again.

I bought this for my 10 year old grandson for Christmas. He is really interested in medieval history. He was so excited that he kept going back to this book between opening other presents.

Reproducedfrom a book originally published in Germany in 1903, this book contains more than a hundred pages of drawings of weapons, and particularily of armor from about 780 to the mid 1600's. The descriptions that go along with the illustrations are very well done and describe points that should be noted about the illustrations. These have been taken from the original German and specially translated for this edition.Covering such a long period of time, the development of styles of armor and the details of construction. I found the discussion on points like gauntlets, elbow protectors and the like to be more complete than anywhere else I've seen. They are based on drawings of the earliest equipment, burial monuments, and from the fifteenth century through the Thirty Years War on extant examples of plate armor.Very well done.

I love this book for so many reasons but mostly because it's getting the word out about what functional medicine is and how it IS the future of healthcare. If you read the stories in this book, you'll realize that every single one was a progression from chronic illness to vitality and wellness. Health coaches will be integral to this delivery model, giving patients who utilize them an edge to meeting their goals. If we're smart, adding nutrition professionals and health coaches to every single medical team would be a paradigm shift in the right direction. We need to switch from an illness based system to a wellness based system. This book covers all the important points about being a health coach, and why proper training is essential. Health coaches are a new key piece to solving our healthcare crisis. The patient centered healthcare of functional medicine can revolutionize our world. As a former critical care nurse, and a 10+ year cancer survivor, I speak from experience when I say Food Is Medicine.

This isn't as much a book as an advertisement for their program. I am an integrative RN health coach, so I am familiar with a lot of the information, however, even if I weren't, it never really tells anything. Lots of pages "Mary from Pennsylvania. Once I found coaching I made a six figure salary.....". "Beth from Montana. I love watching people get better......" Nothing to sink your teeth into. A huge disappointment.

Some good information although it seemed to be more about hiring the author to teach me to become a Medicine Coach than a resource of information. If I really want information, I felt the only way I'd get it would be to sign up for their course. I'm not looking for a new career at 71 years old.

Not much meat on the bones of what functional medicine is. It is mostly an advertisement for their training academy. Not worth the price.

I didn't find this very helpful; was essentially a collection of stories from coaches rather than a guide of how to be a coach. Very basic and not very informative.

I preordered this book not knowing that my son would spend a month training with the Cleveland Clinic center for functional medicine. I love the offer of the free consultation and I will pursue the training to be a coach.I believe this is the future of medicine, of health, of disease prevention and attenuation. Thank you for this most excellent book. I'll be spending a lot of time with this information.

I bought this to help me be a better outlook user at work, but honestly, I read the entire thing in one evening and found nothing helpful for me. I guess I'm not a dummy after all. That being said, it might be helpful for a complete novice at Outlook, but if you have used the program at all, you will dissatisfied with this book.

This has been a great purchase for the project management resource library at our company -- where we are trying to use the combination of Outlook and OneNote for agile project management. This book is technical enough for our IT folks and easy-to-understand for our non-technical employees. I really dislike the "for Dummies" -- but it is a great series with lots of helpful information.

Was hoping more for an approach that started me with the fundamentals and put the "meat on the bones". Not sure what to call the approach he used but it did not fit the way my brain works.

Oh how I pine for my old 2003 version. For my purposes, I not only find the program too complicated but this book as well.

Information is very useful while trying to use outlook full time.

It is very hard to understand if you are computer dumb. I used a bit of it, but it will now set on the book shelf.

This is a good quick way to get started with Outlook, but I purchased a longer, more complete "manual" in order to get more detail. I still haven't resolved the relationship between Outlook "Lite" (the version on Windows 8) with the full edition of Outlook. Maybe with more time I'll get there, but for now I'm not getting the benefit of the full version which I got by virtue of a subscription to Office 365.My other minor complaint about this book is the author's seeming bias against Microsoft. He is entitled to his opinion of MS, but it comes through pretty strongly in this book. Doesn't help build confidence in the product.

President Reagan made notations in his diary every single day of his presidency, except perhaps for those days when he was hospitalized after being shot. He used writing to organize his thoughts and even wrote or edited most of his speeches. His true nature is revealed through his diary entries. He was not an intellectual giant, but he was a charismatic leader and a great orator. He brought people together and worked toward compromises and agreements. For instance, he will always be associated with tearing down the Berlin Wall.The book is quite long - nearly 800 pages in the printed version, and requiring more than 10 hours to read in the Kindle version. Brinkley, the editor, painstakingly retained Reagan's original words, spelling errors and all, though chose to summarize a significant portion of the diary (probably 50%), rather than include a word-for-word rendition. The summarized info is shown in italics. Classified info has also been redacted (shown with square brackets in the text). I started off carefully reading every word, but by about half way through the book, I thought I'd never finish so decided to just skim the italicized text.This is not an autobiography. There is no historical analysis, no retelling of historic events, no summarization of the issues of the day. For instance, though the Iran-Contra affair is mentioned many, many times, you won't be able to piece together what actually happened by reading the diary entries. Perhaps Reagan was not a deep or introspective thinker, or perhaps he just knew that his diaries would become public at some point, and didn't want to get too personal.Here are some of my observations from the diary:He had a modest ego. Even the "Tear Down This Wall" speech in Berlin in 1987 is somewhat downplayed, though he did mention that the speech was warmly received.He had little respect for the press and believed they manipulated situations and chose what news to present; there are quite a few negative comments about Sam Donaldson in particular.He had a contentious relationship with Tip O'Neill.His devotion to Nancy was legendary and he mentioned her absence with longing every time she had to be away from him. He was proud of her work on the "Just Say No" campaign.He hobnobbed with the rich and famous, particularly Hollywood types.He loved to watch movies, even the oldies but goodies. He didn't care for R rated or smutty movies though.He didn't use swear words. He writes d--n and h--l in his diary, and never a mention of the F word at all.He was sensitive and touched by many of the people that he met with hardships, frequently commenting that he "puddled up".He made friends with some of the most important global figures of the day - Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Mother Theresa.His main form of recreation was horseback riding and cutting down trees.He was inordinately proud of his physical condition, always reporting that he got a good report from his many physical exams. In Chapter 4 he wrote "I'm so healthy I had a hard time not acting smug."He was very concerned about his approval rating, and mentioned it frequently; though he wasn't always rated highly, his final polls in office gave him the highest rating of any president ever.He was photographed thousands of times while in office; "photo op" is probably the most commonly recurring appointment on his calendarHe never did learn how to spell Gadaffi (leader of Libya); Quadhafy, Quadafy, Kadhafy, Qaddafi, Quadaffi, Quadafi were some of his attempts.He made history for 8 years, and strolling through his diary is a great reminder of the world changing events of the 1980's. On his last night in office he wrote "Tomorrow I stop being President." There's no way to know from his diary whether he was sad, excited or relieved at the end of his historic term in office. However, reading his diaries motivates me to look for a biography to fill in where his diary leaves off.

This is a book where 99.9% of the words are directly from Reagan himself, so there is no political slant beyond his own. Whether you love him or hate him, you'll find what you're looking for here.The biggest downside is that the editor (and the author [Reagan] as well), doesn't elaborate on what Reagan is saying, so if you're like me and you were young during the events of the early 1980's, you'll have a hard time matching what was written with what was happening in the world at the time.

I've read Reagan's autobiography and Reagan: The Life, but it all started when I saw a paperback copy of The Reagan Diaries in the bargain bin at a book store. The Reagan Diaries aren't something you read through from start to finish, but I pick it up often and just read a few pages. Or I might want to know about a specific entry and flip to that page.The Reagan Diaries is a really intimate, personal look into Reagan's eight years as president of the United States. We get to see, in his own words, what his daily life as president was like, including how he felt about certain issues.If you want to learn more about Reagan's life and political career, then The Reagan Diaries is an essential part of your book collection.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mother on mother's day. The hardcover edition is beautifully bound, and would make a great edition to any reader's shelf. My mother, who is fond of history, reading, and of course Ronald Reagan, has enjoyed sifting through the book. I personally find it would be difficult to read straight through the entire book, as some of Reagan's entrees are quite mundane. Despite this, I think readers will find some words of wisdom and may gain insight into the office of president.The part I most enjoyed while looking through the book are the pictures that capture the most memorable moments of Reagan's presidency. The only complaint I have is the packaging the book arrived in. It was simply covered in a cardboard sort of wrap, resulting in a small scuff on the bottom corner when I received it.

This book depicted who I believe is the real Ronald Reagan. He was smart, compassionate, tough when needed and he read people very well. He truly adored his wife and loved the United States of America. His messages proved him to be a good friend and showed his great respect for those who deserved respect. This book was also a good review of our recent history. Well done.

Reading anyone's diary is like peeking into their life and their innermost secrets. Imagine reading the diary of a U.S. President. After reading this book, one feels like one actually knows Ronald Reagan. No matter the political persuasion, everyone will enjoy reading this diary. President Reagan has a diary entry for every day of his eight-year presidency. There are entries that gives one the inside behind the scenes stories on some of the most fascinating moments in history (USSR, Contras, etc.). And, there are entries that show the humorous side of Ronald Reagan. One recurring theme in these diaries is Ronald Reagan's undying love for his wife Nancy. It comes through in almost every entry. It shows that Ronald Reagan had old fashioned and refreshing values. We will not see the likes of him again. I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down.

I just finished ready The Reagan Diaries. I enjoyed President Reagan's almost daily comments to his diary. I always respected his decisions, as President, but I also was so impressed with his great love of his wife Nancy and how he almost always commented as to how much he missed her when she was away on travel or business . Then again he was so excited and happy when she returned home to the President.
