Amazon.com Review

In the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, in his fourteenth year as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan took part in a very quiet collective effort to ensure that America didn't experience an economic meltdown, taking the rest of the world with it. There was good reason to fear the worst: the stock market crash of October 1987, his first major crisis as Federal Reserve Chairman, coming just weeks after he assumed control, had come much closer than is even today generally known to freezing the financial system and triggering a genuine financial panic. But the most remarkable thing that happened to the economy after 9/11 was...nothing. What in an earlier day would have meant a crippling shock to the system was absorbed astonishingly quickly. After 9/11 Alan Greenspan knew, if he needed any further reinforcement, that we're living in a new world - the world of a global capitalist economy that is vastly more flexible, resilient, open, self-directing, and fast-changing than it was even 20 years ago. It's a world that presents us with enormous new possibilities but also enormous new challenges. The Age of Turbulence is Alan Greenspan's incomparable reckoning with the nature of this new world - how we got here, what we're living through, and what lies over the horizon, for good and for ill-channeled through his own experiences working in the command room of the global economy for longer and with greater effect than any other single living figure. He begins his account on that September 11th morning, but then leaps back to his childhood, and follows the arc of his remarkable life's journey through to his more than 18-year tenure as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, from 1987 to 2006, during a time of transforming change. Alan Greenspan shares the story of his life first simply with an eye toward doing justice to the extraordinary amount of history he has experienced and shaped. But his other goal is to draw readers along the same learning curve he followed, so they accrue a grasp of his own understanding of the underlying dynamics that drive world events. In the second half of the book, having brought us to the present and armed us with the conceptual tools to follow him forward, Dr. Greenspan embarks on a magnificent tour de horizon of the global economy. He reveals the universals of economic growth, delves into the specific facts on the ground in each of the major countries and regions of the world, and explains what the trend-lines of globalization are from here. The distillation of a life's worth of wisdom and insight into an elegant expression of a coherent worldview, The Age of Turbulence will stand as Alan Greenspan's personal and intellectual legacy. I was pleasantly surprised by how informative and insightful this book is... As a trained economist I have never paid much attention to Chairman Greenspan’s musings in the media because I thought they were too cryptic, as he points out in the book he often relied on Fed speak to communicate with the public. Having read this book I now understand why he rose to the top of his trade and advised 5 U.S. presidents over 5 decades : solid understanding of how the economy works and healthy skepticism about the limits of government intervention in the economy. His base case economic scenario for 2030 in my view is in the ball park, and the key assumptions should raise the alarm, given current policy direction. I also agree with his read on major challenges for the U.S. in the coming years i.e. 1-address income inequality through investments in education and a more effective immigration policy... 2-provide support for people displaced by the effects of globalization and let creative destruction take us to a better place. He points out in 2007 that if the U.S. does not address the impact of globalization middle income families we run a risk that a populist government take a short-cut and raise trade barriers with serious negative consequences for the U.S. as well as the global economy. You could safely say that he predicted the 2016 election. This book is a must read, specially for those currently advising the POTUS.

I gave this book 5 stars primarily for the vast information it contains. As someone who was a titan in the business and consulting world and then held the post of the federal reserve chairman, (one of the top five most powerful positions in the world) for over two decades, he has a tremendous story to tell. The first half of the book which talks about his professional life, largely provides a historical glance into 20th century America, from the great depression till date. The second (part), delves into his take on issues such as world economics, corporate governance, inequality, globalization, capitalism, market forces, deregulation etc. In most, if not all instances, he offers a convincing argument and explanation for his stances. At times his language is a little difficult to grasp but overall it is a fantastic read.I recommend heartily.

Excellent book overall. Lots of great insights. Don't look to this book for any "gossip" or insider fodder on the Presidents and administrations her has worked for. The first half is a biography and the second half is his views on a range of economic subjects.

I purchased the CDs to listen in my car while I commute to learn more about Global and Macroeconomics. While it was not a classroom education it was well worth the time and money. The first several CDs cover Mr. Greenspan's early life and give a great deal of insight into how his views developed. They are very light, laced with dry (but quite amusing) humor and move along very quickly. Upon learning of his close friendship with Ayn Rand, much of his manner and opinion comes into clear focus.Namely, Mr. Greenspan is a unapologetic Free Market Capitalist. His arena is Global Macroeconomics and he embraces "Creative Destruction" wholeheartedly. While he does address the hardships of this, it is in a purely pragmatic approach. I get the feeling he does care about the socioeconomic fallout but this is not the purpose of these CDs.The middle CDs are sometimes difficult for a lay person to follow but are worth repeating to gain a better understanding. His explanations of Developing Markets, Populism, and the demise of Central Planning are very detailed and interesting.I found I enjoyed the last CDs the most as they address current global uncertainties. The spike in oil prices, the fall of the dollar, accounting scandals, changing labor markets, and need to address energy consumption. You may not agree with him on principal but he presents solid arguments in his favor.I recommend this collection to lay people interested in gaining a better understanding of Global macroeconomics and, oddly, those opposed to Globalization. While the latter may sound odd Mr. Greenspan presents his argument clearly and concisely. There are no vaguaries in his points and this allows reasoned response to to these issues.

Review

"The text is nicely presented, with many illuminating and/or entertaining quotes and diagrams. … The wide scope of the work and the way that the author manages to show the connections between the different topics are the main strength of the book, making it a good place to start if you have some interest in logic, set theory, or just challenging ideas in general."―Yann Peresse, London Mathematical Society Newsletter, June 2013 "The book follows essentially two roads to infinity: Cantor’s diagonal argument and Cantor’s construction of the ordinals. Stillwell shows how these two themes intertwine and influence a wide range of mathematical questions … The scope of this book is breathtaking, but Stillwell has masterfully presented and developed a wide range of mathematics as a coherent narrative. … He is able to pack a lot of information and ideas into a few well-chosen paragraphs without sacrificing clarity. Stillwell is an accomplished historian of mathematics who doesn’t limit himself to the work of the well-known. I appreciated the appearance of some of the lesser known contributors to the study of the infinite. … It is well-conceived and well-written, and covers a large amount of material on logic, transfinite set theory, provability, combinatorics, and the histories of these fields."―James V. Rauff, Mathematics and Computer Education, Winter 2012 "Stillwell is a master expositor and does a very good job explaining and weaving together many core issues in mathematical logic and foundational studies. … Stillwell’s book is highly commendable, very informative and well organized. It is very carefully produced."―José Ferreirós, American Mathematical Monthly, February 2012 "I highly recommend it for undergraduates in mathematics and other young mathematicians who are looking for historical context or a different angle to their studies. Readers who have experience with theoretical analysis or a foundation in abstract mathematics will find the examples wonderfully illustrative. For these readers, Stillwell’s words will flow smoothly, almost like a novel."―Joyance Meechai, Mathematics Teacher, October 2011 "Stillwell has produced an excellent book on infinity for the motivated lay reader. … The author does a masterful job of painting a historical portrait of logic, set theory, incompleteness, computable functions, and many associated foundational questions. His lively style and clear exposition of the relationship between proof and truth will engage both the novice and the expert. Although there are numerous books on the topic of infinity, Stillwell tells a story which motivates the ideas he introduces. This is a book that anyone with an interest in mathematics should have in their library. Highly recommended."―R.L. Pour, CHOICE, March 2011 "This book is an accessible, but also a scholarly and extremely well-written introduction to the great ideas of modern logic. While the central results are the famed proofs of Gödel, Stillwell does a masterful job of relating that work not only to Gödel’s contemporaries, such as Post, Turing, Church, Tarski, Gentzen, and von Neumann, but also to modern researchers in the foundations of mathematics (Friedman, Woodin, and others). Chapter 6 on natural unprovable sentences is a gem … Stillwell’s book is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in the development of mathematical logic in the 20th century and learning about the possible directions of the field in the 21st."―Stan Wagon, The College Mathematics Journal, March 2011 "In 1963, Edwin E. Moise published Elementary Geometry from an Advanced Standpoint and his book became a classic. … [this book] deserves the same outcome. … One of the most enjoyable features is Stillwell’s use of techniques of logic and set theory to solve real mathematical problems … Another enjoyable feature is Stillwell’s uniform coverage of unprovability, undecidability and non-computability … suitable for self-study … it is excellent background material for computer scientists and mathematicians in other fields. The historical notes alone are worth perusing by anyone who is interested in the development of mathematical ideas."―Phill Schultz, Gazette of the Australian Mathematical Society, March 2011 "… a clear and succinct guide. … One interesting feature of the book is the careful treatment of two of the less famous contributors in this area―Emil Post and Gerhard Gentzen …"―CMS Notes, Vol. 43, No. 1, February 2011 "… excellent book … the investment the reader makes―be he an intellectually curious adult or a math grad student with extra time on her hands―pays off with an increased understanding of the fascinating world of mathematical logic. The author’s thorough, well-researched historical comments are particularly valuable, as well as the philosophical quotations from the important players in this game. There is a very complete bibliography. What the reader might appreciate most is the ability of the author to share his deep insights into what is important and what it all means in the most profound sense. … it is clear that the book received excellent proofreading before publication. …"―Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2011f "This is an interesting book on infinity. The author combines set theory and logic to face the most basic and fruitful aspects of infinity."―Claudi Alsina, Zentralblatt MATH 1196 "Featuring chapters dedicated to the diagonal argument, ordinals, computability and proof, logic, arithmetic, natural unprovable sentences, and axioms, as well as being enhanced with the inclusion of a lengthy bibliography and a comprehensive index, Roads to Infinity: The Mathematics of Truth and Proof is highly recommended reading for students, scholars, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the history and contemporary issues of mathematics today."―Able Greenspan, Midwest Book Review "I love reading anything by John Stillwell. If you've ever been tantalized by the puzzles of infinity, set theory, and logic, and want to understand what's really going on, this is the book for you. It's an exceptionally fine piece of mathematical exposition."―Steven Strogatz, Cornell University, author of The Calculus of Friendship

John Stillwell's "Roads to Infinity" sounds like another "Gödel's theorem" book. Yes, it mentions it and gets into Gödel's famous theorems, a little bit. But, he just finds a simple alternative; he doesn't mention Gödel numbering. I've been through say Nagel's "Gödel's Proof." But, even then, I don't recall all this stuff about ordinals. John Stillwell shows George Cantor's genius a lot more by showing the Fourier analyses roots of his ideas and George Cantor's ordinal numbers work. This is just a start of what you can get from here, if you're not a phd logician/mathematician.If you think George Cantor's transfinite numbers is mindblowing, his work on ordinals to analyse infinit cardinal numbers is . . . it shows how one can analyse infinity far more than most people could ever dream.I'd like to say, that as usual, in John Stillwell's works, he always finds some modern easier short proof of results; otherwise, he references off. He gives examples when he can find easy examples, and just mentions hard problems(mostly in chapter supplements where they belong). In John Stillwell's other works, he loves to point out the induction definitions of arithmetic; in this book, he gives a lot more reason to take those seriously!Historically, one of the major reasons for proof was the inability to deal with infinity. Here, John Stillwell shows the affect infinity has had on proof. I think logical proof has proven to be more than we thought through the ages, so I don't think one should consider syllogisms discredited by modern studies of infinity and proof. But, I do like the recent results of the interplay between finite and infinit. And John's book . . . well, I don't think he does more than introduce one to these things. In Oyestein Ore's "Number theory and its History", he gets into some number theory, some diophanine analyses, where he shows some lead to infinity and some are finite. This has always suggested to me that determining when things are finite and when they are infinity, when they are compact or not seems to be an interesting question in mathematics(I can't say that I totally know lie theory; but, I have done some look ahead and found that some of the majory lie theory work of the twentieth century anyways has to do with compact and non-compact geometry). And so, the mathematics of the interplay between the finit and infinit at least excited me.

Whoa... I mean this is the kind of book that is so significant and intellect changing that you simply MUST read it, but.......and this is a big but, read slowly, take your time, and absorb. Utterly mind stretching..........I LOVED IT! Will be reading this many times......

I bought this book out of interest since it had very good reviews from other readers. I was not disappointing as the book is very well written, informative, and interesting. The introductory chapters on the concept of infinity provide very clear explanations of the problems associated with defining what is the limit of very large numbers. This book I would highly recommend to anybody who wanted to read a non-technical account of the issues around infinity and to come away with a sound understanding of the what the term means.

This is an excellent introduction to how logic and modern set theory affect modern mathematics. Delves into Cantor's theory of transfinite numbers. Also examines work of Kurt Godel, Emil Post , and Gerhard Gentzen. Not too technical. Very readable.

Clear and very concise. Stillwell did a masterful job on this review of the mathematics of different infinities. The book is both content rich and also easy to understand.

The book's writing sometimes seemed vague and confusing. That said, it did have interesting content.

[The other "MidWest Book Review" seems to miss the main point of the book and doesn't do justice to it.]This book is not original research, but is still a great book because it opened my eyes to some very important maths about logic that I've overlooked. As the title says, it's about truth and proof. It surprised me that the "strength" of proof systems is somehow related to transfinite numbers.Chapter 1: Aleph_0 is the cardinality of the integers. 2^Aleph_0 is the cardinality of the continuum (ie, the real line). By Cantor's diagonal argument we know there is no 1-1 correspondence between the integers and the reals.Chapter 2: Cantor's theory of infinite ordinals. We can count from 1,2,3,... to infinity, and BEYOND that, is the first transfinite ordinal, that Cantor denotes as omega. Then we can carry on counting with omega + 1, omega + 2, omega +3, ..., to omega * 2. This process goes on to omega * 3, omega * 4, ..., and to omega^2, omega^3, ..., omega^omega, omega^omega^omega, ..., and eventually to omega raised to omega an infinite number of times, but it still doesn't end. The next ordinal is epsilon_0, and these countable ordinals go "inconceivably far beyond" epsilon_0. This results in Aleph_1, the first UNCOUNTABLE ordinal, and it still doesn't end!The continuum hypothesis asks whether 2^Aleph_0 = Aleph_1. It is still unsolved, but Cohen believes that it is highly unlikely to be true. Godel proved that CH is consistent with standard Zermelo-Frankel set theory. Cohen (the inventor of "forcing") proved that it cannot be proved in ZF.All this is explained very clearly in the book; my summary is lousy. John Stillwell's writing style is very engaging, he knows the subject thoroughly and is able to explain every detail with exceptional clarity.Chapter 3: About Emil Post's efforts to search for a formulation of all formal systems. He saw that unprovability is a simple consequence of the diagonal argument; this predated Godel's incompleteness theorems, but he didn't publish because the Church-Turing thesis was not yet established at that time (so he wasn't sure if his normal form is universal; Later it turned out to be, of course, Turing-equivalent).Chapter 4: An introduction to logic and deduction, via Gentzen's sequent calculus. I mainly skimmed this chapter. Cut elimination is introduced here.Chapter 5: This chapter is very crucial. It starts with the Peano axioms for arithmetic (PA). We can assign a countable ordinal to each vertex of the proof tree. Thus, a proof system's "strength" can be measured by what kind of induction it allows. Gentzen 1943 proved that induction up to any ordinal less than epsilon_0 can be proved in PA. However, there exists "real" theorems whose proof lies beyond epsilon_0 induction. Some examples are given next...Chapter 6: "Natural Unprovable Theorems". Eg: the Paris-Harrington theorem in Ramsey theory and the Tao-Green theorem in number theory.Chapter 7: About "Axioms of Infinity" that can be added to ZF so it can deal with infinities. [I haven't read this chapter yet, maybe later. Hope this review helps you so far!]

The Mind-Gut Connection: How the Hidden Conversation Within Our Bodies Impacts Our Mood, Our Choices, and Our Overall Health, by Emeran Mayer

Review

“The Mind-Gut Connection presents the incredibly humbling reality that our very perception and interpretation of the world around us is virtually dictated by the microbes living within us. This book redefines what it means to be healthy and eloquently provides the means to manifest that goal.” (David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain and Brain Maker)“Drawing on his vast experience as a practicing gastroenterologist, Dr. Mayer writes about the connections that our brains have with our guts, especially with the microbes that make the gut their home. Describing a rapidly advancing realm of knowledge, this thoughtful guide provides practical advice to improve health.” (Martin J. Blaser, MD, author of Missing Microbes)“Dr. Emeran Mayer elucidates the intricate biochemical dialogue that occurs between the brain, digestive tract, and trillions of bacteria residing in the gut. He dubs this form of communication ‘microbe-speak’ and speculates on its implications for social behavior, decision making, emotional wellbeing, and maybe mental health.” (Booklist)“After a long period of neglect the enteric nervous system has been recognized as the ‘second brain’. Dr. Emeran Mayer, a true expert of this topic, has now written the best lay-public guide yet to this spectacular part of ourselves. Recommended reading.” (Antonio Demasio, author of Descartes’ Error, The Feeling of What Happens, and The Self Comes to Mind)“I have known Emeran Mayer for years and have learned to pay attention to what he says and writes. The Mind-Gut Connection is a delight. Both scholarly and fun to read, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about how the mind and gut communicate.” (Michael D. Gershon, MD, author of The Second Brain)“Microbiome research is revolutionizing our understanding of the human body and the brain. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer provides authoritative insight into this rapidly expanding field. Synthesizing recent research with patient stories and personal anecdotes, he offers practical, evidence-based recommendations to keep the dialogue between the brain, the gut, and its microbes flowing smoothly.” (Rob Knight, PhD, author of Follow Your Gut and director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation, UC San Diego)“The Mind-Gut Connection is a revolutionary new holistic view of what keeps us healthy, ranging from the food choices we make to the ways we can train our mind, with the ultimate goal of attaining optimal health. ” (Kenneth R. Pelletier, PhD, MD, Clincal Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health, University of California School of Medicine (UCSF))“Microbiome research is revolutionizing our understanding of the human body and the brain. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer provides authoritative insight into this rapidly expanding field. Synthesizing recent research with patient stories and personal anecdotes, he offers practical, evidence-based recommendations to keep the dialogue between the brain, the gut, and its microbes flowing smoothly.” (SELF online)

From the Back Cover

Chances are, at some point in your life you’ve noticed the connection between your brain and your gut. If you’ve ever felt queasy as you walked into an uncomfortable situation or based a life decision based on a “gut feeling,” then you know that sometimes our bodies react faster than our minds. Most of us have also experienced the same phenomenon in reverse, where our mental state has affected our digestive system—like the butterflies in our stomach before an important meeting or a first date. But while the dialogue between the mind and the gut has been recognized for centuries, scientists today are just starting to understand how powerful that connection is.In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, executive director of the UCLA Oppenheimer Center for the Neurobiology of Stress, offers a cutting-edge view into this developing science, showing us the full impact of how the brain, gut, and microbiome—the community of microorganisms that live inside the digestive tract—communicate. As Dr. Mayer explains, when this communication channel is out of whack, major health problems can crop up, including food sensitivities and allergies, digestive disorders, obesity, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. The Mind-Gut Connection teaches us how, with a few simple changes to our diet and lifestyle, we can enjoy a happier mindset, enhanced immunity, a decreased risk of developing neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, and even lose weight. With a simple, practical regimen drawn from the latest research, Dr. Mayer shows us that paying attention to the mind-gut balance is the key to unlocking vibrant health.

There is sure no shortage of trade books on the microbiome and the list of books is bound to proliferate given the popularity of the topic. This book separates itself from the pack in a number of ways. First, Dr Mayer is one of the select group of scientists worldwide whose work has helped fuel research into what we know about the microbiome and its importance to our health. While other scientists saw painful medical disorders like irritable bowel syndrome as a “psychiatric disorder” Dr Mayer was conducting research showing that the brain has a far more powerful and complex role in tipping the balance between health and illness than just governing our mental wellbeing. Because he knows what he is talking about, the reader can feel confident that the material is accurate, trust worthy, and backed by evidence tested in rigorous laboratory settings. This is no small feat among the growing number of books chock full of half-truths, exaggerations, and outright inaccuracies that make it hard for the reader to separate fact from fiction. Second, Dr Mayer emphasizes the importance not only of how our mood, behaviors like our activity level and what we eat and drink, and mindset can impact the collection of microbes that colonize the human body but how our microbiome can in turn impact the brain. There is no other book available that covers so much terrain with such expertise and precision. Third, the book is an easy read, written in such an engaging and non-technical manner that even the person whose last science book was in 10th grade bio class will find this book a pleasure to read, making it far and away the best microbiome book out there for general audience. Finally, as a gifted clinician, Dr Mayer concludes the book with some “nuts and bolts” strategies for how to make simple lifestyle changes that put in practice what microbiome research tells us about how to optimize our health. A+: Recommend wholeheartedly-- Dr Jeffrey Lackner, Behavioral Medicine Clinic, University at Buffalo, SUNY

This book is exceedingly helpful and informative. My husband, who is a professor in the Medical School at UCLA, and I are captivated by this important and cutting-edge work. I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Mayer as my physician years ago and he cured me of my IBS. This work explains clearly the connection between the mind and the gut, which is bidirectional, it is utterly fascinating. There are few professionals with the combination of care, compassion, concern, dedication and knowledge that Dr. Mayer possesses. It is a gift to us that he wrote this outstanding book. I strongly recommend this vital book. He is an exceptional physician, as he looks at the whole person and the interconnection with the mind, body, emotions and spirit, sadly, a rare combination in today's medical practice..

Synopsis - the bacteria in your digestive system play a large and underappreciated role in both your gut health and in your overall health; take care of them. While an enjoyable and colorful read, this book has several problems with it. First, the author draws many "conclusions" based upon the work of published animal studies even though in he also admits that the neurological systems of animals and humans are considerably different. Sometimes he admits that his conclusions are just hypotheticals but more commonly goes for the sensational claims to wow the layreader.Second, the books suffers from sloppy editing. A typical example is on page 208 where Mayer says, "This helps explain the fact that infants who are not breastfed have fewer bifidobacteria in their stool than formula-fed infants." Other editing errors are buried in the often contradictory science-speak - I'm sure a biochemist would have a field day here. His discussion of the neurotransmitter GABA on pages 141-142 is particularly wishy-washy.Third, the book is light on novel recommendations. The concluding remarks on page 284: maximize regular intake of naturally fermented foods and probiotics, cut down on animal fat, avoid processed food, eat smaller servings, be mindful of prenatal nutrition, reduce stress, avoid eating when sad or depressed, enjoy social aspects of food, and listen to your gut.Bottom line, a fun read but lots of book-selling science claims without many actionable recommendations.

This book is a must-read. It's no secret that our medical system is suffering. The reasons are multi-factorial. But what Dr. Mayer's book illuminates is that a new paradigm for understanding how our bodies function (and malfunction) is overdue. Once we understand that the brain, gut and bacteria are in communication, the construct of specialties of medicine based on body part or system is outdated. As Dr. Mayer so aptly states, our current system of medicine is based on a post-industrial age concept of a machine with parts that go bad. Hypertension? Off to the cardiologist. Abdominal pain? Gastroenterologist. The overhaul will require that we adopt a holistic perspective, that the communication between systems and organs is as important as the systems and organs themselves. This mandate is no different than the one for our society as a whole. As a recently hired physician at UCLA, never having heard of Dr. Mayer, I saw his book on the shelf of a colleague. Its name appealed to me and I ordered it that night. To say I was excited to see my personal long-held philosophies in print, validated by years of Dr. Mayer's research and experience, was an understatement. Fast forward six months, I am now exploring collaboration with Dr. Mayer and others with the intention of researching the mind-gut-microbiome connection with eating disorders. Our concepts must evolve, and Dr. Mayer's book points us in the right direction.

Really thought provoking. I learned a lot by reading this book. There are more serotonin neurons in the gut than in the brain. I felt like it needed more advice, though. I learned a lot but not sure how to put it into effect to help myself with brain-gut problems. What is the next step please?

The Audel HVAC Fundamentals series: Volumes 1, 2, 3, have been a great source of information for me in maintaining my old HVAC system. My Dad first introduced me to the very useful Audel publications.

Heat Pumps are one of the subjects my students have the greatest difficulty understanding well. This book has helped me provide them with another perspective and furnished me with an additional resource to guide them through the certification process.

A solid beginning at understanding HVAC.

I didn't find these series of books very useful at all. I bought them when I first started out in the HVAC industry and they were no help to me. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Thanks!!!

The controls section of this book needs to be updated, but 90% of the book is still relevant. The text tends to lag behind the images, but this book is packed with a ton of helpful information and plenty of pictures. If you're a mechanic and you're working with older equipment, maybe this book is exactly what you're looking for. This is the second book that I bought by Mr. Brumbaugh, and I noticed there's a little over lapping, but still, this book is a few bucks and what you'll get out of it is worth it.

Most of the information is too basic and out of date; not any real value.

Good reference book to have in ones library. Be sure to have on hand. Be sure to get your copy.

no information I could use.Out of date.

I bought this for my 6 yr. daughter. She's very interested in Space. It's a good quality book (no cheap paper). It has a lot of information from the past. First attempt into space they sent a dog. My daughter is very smart and understands what she is reading (or what I help her read). I would say it's more for 8 yrs and up (but perfect for a younger mature child). It has original pictures (not cartoon drawings) and is very educational for the whole family (if you are interested in learning about space). I recommend it for your collection.

We are using this book as a supplement to our homeschool science curriculum this year. It is a perfect fit for my 11yo 6th grader.I LOVE that:1. It is written so that an 11 yo can comprehend not only the solar system, but space exploration when reading on her own.2. I am excited to have experiments that are simple for my daughter to do on her own, or with very LITTLE help from me. She loves the independence and self confidence that this gives her.3. I am quite impressed with the historical figures and astronomers that are discussed within the book. It is fun to learn what scientists and astronomers helped to invent or discover.I believe this book is a great book for kids 6 - 8th grade to read on their own, and for 4th and 5th graders who are being read to and helped out a bit more.

Purchased to go along with telescope. Wasn't aware at the time that this would go along with projects they are doing in school. This is a hit with me.

I must say that this is a very well-written and illustrated reading material for all ages, not just for kids.

Being a nerd, I was sure my 6-y/o would love this, since he wanted "space stuff." He never got into it. I forgot he had it until I saw it on the "review your amazon purchase" page.

In true Mary Kay Carson fashion, Exploring the Solar System : A History with 22 Activities isn't dumbed down even the slightest. Carson respects children and seems to grasp well what they can be expected to understand - which is often more than what they are credited with. As a result, her text is thorough and frank and can easily be read to would-be astronauts as young as 4 or 5 years. And the illustrative photos are stunning, the perfect foil for the text in capturing the imagination. From interviews with well-regarded scientists (including explanations of how they themselves became interested in studying space) to easy-to-execute activities to a very thorough timeline of space exploration, Carson has once again thought of everything for engaging our own little scientists. I simply cannot recommend this book enough.

Great classroom resource!
