#328,837 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a wonderful resource for LEGO Harry Potter fans and collectors. It includes tons of worthwhile information about all sets released between 2001 and 2011, plus a great set timeline, minifigure galaxy, and even an index to help you find what you are looking for. I've put together a short video pictorial review so you'll know what's included. I hope you find it helpful.

Despite being one of those mass produced "series" books, this is a beautiful, very well illustrated, current and accurate overview of human origins. I grew up with Time Life books as a kid -- wish they were still produced, they were the sort of books that would draw me away from eBooks and back to print media -- and this the only work on this subject that is a worthy successor to the old Time Life Emergence of Man series. This is a large format volume, but is NOT a "coffee table book" (I always think of the great Seinfeld episode where Kramer publishes a coffee table book with folding legs that actually turn it into a coffee table), it is content-rich.

Evolution: The Human Story is a wonderful book. It is beautiful and compels you to keep reading. It may not be an in-depth book for someone who wants to learn the finer points of evolution, nor does it have to be, but it is a ton of fun. My 4 and 8 year old children love looking at it with me and that is, in fact, one of the reasons I purchased it. They love the pictures. They ask questions about them which prompt the reading of the small chunks of fun information. I would not use this book to ace a legitimate class on the subject but would use it to grease the old gaskets before the course! A fantastic book for beginners. A perfect book for the coffee table.

Evolution: The Human Story highlights lifelike fossil-hominoid head reconstructions while also featuring many images of living and fossil primates. Pages 30-31 show in photographs the thirteen steps in the reconstruction process used by Dutch paleoartists Adrie and Alfons Kennis that involves layers of plastic clay, silicone rubber, mold-painting-casting, glass eyeballs, and hair insertions. Page 44 features the skulls of the giant monkeys Caipora (44 pounds) and Protopithecus (55 pounds) of Brazil, both of which were probably hunted to extinction by humans. Pages 52-53 feature the skulls, pelvises, and skeletons of the orangutan, the gorilla, the chimpanzee, and the modern human. Pages 58-59 feature side views of the head reconstructions of Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus afarensis, Australopithecus africanus, Homo habilis, Homo ergaster, Homo heidelbergensis, and Homo sapiens that show the evolutionary progression of increasing cranial size and decreasing jaws projection. Pages 66-67 show the lifelike head reconstruction of Sahelanthropus tchadensis that features orange-and-yellow hair, charcoal-gray facial skin and ears, and a faintly-human expression-appearance. Pages 90-91 show the lifelike head reconstruction of Australopithecus africanus for the Taung child, which is viewed as having died at 2-3 years old and which lacks the jaws projection of the adult form. Pages 172-173 feature side and back views of the head reconstructions of Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus afarensis, Australopithecus africanus, Homo habilis, Homo georgicus, Homo ergaster, Homo erectus, Homo antecessor, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo floresiensis, and Homo sapiens.

Beautiful book. Full of written information. But it doesn't stop there. The graphics are outstanding. With this book, you can learn about evolution just by studying the graphics and their captions. I recommend this book to any one interested in human evolution.

My son asked for this because he builds lego and wanted ideas. He is very happy with it. It has great pictures and ideas.

This book is awesome! It is big and may not fit on every shelf but that is not a problem for me. The quality is very good, lots of photos and illustrations. Would suit as a gift.

Similar to other books from this publisher and all have been very enjoyable and informative. My favorite bedside reading.

This book SHOULD be the book in every science class that covers human evolution, if it were humans would stop wasting time filing delusional lawsuits to teach creationism as science. This book is well written, well documented, and provide stunning evidence that covers the evolution of the human species.

#381,557 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

First off, I would like to thank Kathy Addis for helping folks who need quick solutions to living gluten free.My machine is a low cost Hamilton Beach with a perported Gluten Free cycle, which was not really properly designed for gluten free baking, rather it was a marketing ploy to hook in gluten free buyers. So the kneading and baking times are inappropriate for gluten free ingredients. It does however have Express cycles for 1.5 lb and 2 lb loaves that take approximately 1 hour total like advised in Kathy's book so I was happy to buy Kathy's book and try her recipes.I USED FRESH SAF INSTANT YEAST. If you do not used fresh yeast or at least proof your yeast, do not complain about failures to rise. The ingredients mix and rise just fine, but I have found that the bread does not fully finish baking on my machine. Perhaps this explains some of the folks who say they ended up with mush. Fortunately I have the option of letting the Rapid cycle run to the end, wait for the end beep then reset and use the Bake cycle to add another hour. I have to then set a timer to alert me when a half hour has elapsed so I can take out the loaf when it is done. This results in fine loaves. I determined this by testing with a dial meat thermometer which I place in the loaf near the end of the rapid cycle, and close the lid. I can then check the temp through the window on the lid of my machine. If you read the manuals of various bread machines on the internet, you will see what a great variety there is in baking temperatures, kneading times, rising times and baking times. No wonder the recipes in this book do not work for everybody. But most machines allow you to add time by using the "bake" cycle after completing a shorter cycle with a single rise in it that is more appropriate for gluten free ingredients. If your machine does not have a bake only cycle, you can pull out the pan and place it on its side to finish it in the oven. I feel she should add instructions in the book on testing end temperatures and on additional baking if necessary for your machine. Also you could just use the bread machine dough mixing cycle and bake in a bread pan in the oven for the appropriate time. Like many folks I do not have a big expensive mixer and do not enjoy mixing by hand so the dough cycle is a handy thing for me!I do wish there were more bread recipes in this book with different grains. Also it would be nice to have a "gum free" recipe for those folks intolerant of xanthan gum or guar gum.I wish the folks who failed with this book would list what machines they were using and whether they had fresh yeast. It might save others from failing. It would be delightful if I had a machine that turned out these recipes perfectly without the extra effort I mentioned above, but this book is still useful and you can make the recipes work. Perhaps you will even luck out and have a machine that works great with these recipes. It's worth a try.

The book's value is the author's guidance in using a bread machine. It was worth the $5 and even more to overcome my fear of making gluten-free bread with my new Oster, giving me the confidence to revamp recipes I've tried in the oven (but it just took too long and was too messy). I've tried three recipes so far; two were so-so, but the raisin-cinnamon bread is fantastic! Next I plan to try the onion buttermilk recipe. Her recipe and advice about stuffing and croutons was amazing. I would welcome other recipe books and bread machine baking advice from this author.

I so wanted to like it and I followed other reviews to increase baking time etc.... I think the author hasn't included enough info regarding liquid amounts, judging texture of the bread, adding liquid substitutions for dry milk, etc. Each loaf that I tried, Sally Lunn and cinnamon raisin, call for more liquid than other recipes (since I substituted dry milk with liquid almond milk as the author suggests) and both loaves were a gloppy mess, even with extended bake time.So now I give up on this book for my bread machine :(

Some of these recipes are way off. I first tried "Sally Lunn Bread" on page 72, and ended up with one awful mess. It calls for both a cup of milk, and 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Way too much liquid, and just try to get that goo out of the bottom of your machine. I don't think I want to try any others in this book.

Love this book! If you are frustrated and determined to make gf bread in a machine, please do yourself a big favor and get this. It is so helpful understanding the process. I combine this book with Gluten-Free Bread, by Sophie Miller. By using these books you can make easy breads like quick potato bread and a simple bread bread. Kathy thanks for the help and encouragement!! Also, if you get a bread machine, I recommend one with a gf setting, and use that setting. I have a Ham. Beach.

These are great recipes, even in a small machine. I use a Zojirushi BB-HAC10 Home Bakery Programmable Mini Breadmaker, and was delighted to see that Addis gives instructions for adapting recipes. Though my Zojirushi's quick bread cycle takes two hours and her recipes are for machines with one-hour cycles, they still work just fine. My favorites include the maple oat bread (which I make with agave syrup) and the Italian Dried Tomato Bread - though the multi-grain bread is really good too, and I haven't tried a recipe I didn't like. These recipes do use eggs, and for one-loaf machines the instructions call for using 2 eggs instead of 3 along with half the other ingredients). The result is a bread with a slight custardy texture, though not annoyingly so, and a great taste - even my husband, who isn't on a gluten-free diet, agrees. The loaves are a bit smaller than others I've made in my machine, probably due to the use of instant yeast. It's still some of the best bread I've had in the almost 20 years I've been gluten-free.The ingredients may require a bit of shopping (online for me, despite my fairly well stocked gluten free pantry). Addis's basic bread flour recipe calls for both soy flour and coconut flour, along with the brown and white rice flours and tapioca starch I always have on hand, and she uses SAF instant yeast and dough enhancer, also new ingredients for me. But the results are well worth it. There are a lot of really appealing recipes in the book - cinnamon or pecan raisin, cheddar cheese, buttermilk onion, Welsh currant, and savory bacon pepper loaf, along with the maple oat and Italian dried tomato and multi-grain breads that are my favorites. After taking years to find recipes to make the simplest kind of edible bread, I'm really looking forward to having a lot of fun with this cookbook, baking some really interesting savory breads at last!P.S. I ordered a copy to give a nephew on a gluten-free diet, and was happy to see that it now comes with a spiral binding, so it will lie flat on its own - much easier to use.

My Dad gave me a copy of this when I graduated highschool in the 90s but I wasn't "ready" for it yet, I don't even think I read it to be honest. Now I'm 37 and realizing that I've put my personal growth on the back burner for entirely too long. I had pretty much given up on making new adult friends. I had actually self-diagnosed myself with Asperger's because I was having such a difficult time trying to figure out why people (including myself) do the things that do. The realization that my marriage was being effected by my nearly empty toolbox of social skills promoted me to take personal responsibility and shoulder the blame myself for once instead of blaming everyone around me for everything. I grew up with a hypercritical Mother so I think I had promised myself that I would never be criticized again, even if that meant writing people off the instant I felt like I had made myself vulnerable enough to be hurt by them. I couldn't find the copy that my dad gave me so I ordered a new one and chapter 1 alone is changing the way I look at EVERYTHING. I've been plagued with mild depression/anxiety for 20 years and I'm realizing that I've developed some unhealthy defense mechanisms to cope with these issues. I never turned to drugs or alcohol, but the fortress-like walls I've constructed to deal with criticism (real or perceived) aren't much better for me. I've re-read and taken notes on the first section of the book several times now and my wife is noticing and she seems quite relieved, i had no idea I could impact another persons life so strongly. Like I said, I am only getting started with the book and it has already helped me enough to warrant a 5-star rating. This book has stood the test of time for a reason and I can see why now. The strategies are applicable to and helpful in all aspects of my life so far, from my marriage to my job, and even to the way I interact with clerks in gas stations. I've read numerous self help books in the past, seen a therapist for 3 years, been through the gauntlet of antidepressants, etc, and until now I thought I was wasting my time. I've been learning things all along, but I never learned how to actually apply the things I had learned until now. This book speaks my language and if your background sounds even remotely similar I have a feeling that you'll agree.

I wish I had purchased this book sooner.Dale Carnegie's advice has remained constant and applicable across the years for a reason. It's simple and his techniques make perfect sense. If you're anything like me, you'll be kicking yourself when you see how you could have handled situations differently. I'm being transformed from a socially awkward, timid and defensive person, to someone that seems collected and confident. If you're having troubles in life and simply can't figure out what you're doing wrong, this is a fantastic place to start. Good luck on your journey!

In my honest opinion, several principles in this book are repeated around the book. I don't see it as a disadvantage, because repetition is the key to learning. I did think several of the principles explained in the book are common sense, but I found that it could be easy for a person to react quickly to conflicts. This book has taught me the importance of staying in control and how beneficial it is to be in control of our behaviors and act in a way of service to others. The examples described in the book made it simpler to understand the concepts that Dale is teaching. I recommend this book if you would like to improve your skills with people. This book is especially beneficial for those who are working on their businesses and close relationships. This book is divided into four parts. The first half of the book discusses techniques in handling people and how to have people like you. The final half of the book gives instructions about how to win people to our own thinking and how to be a leader by changing people without offending them or causing resentment. In the first part of the book, it is divided into three principles. The first principle emphasizes the importance of avoiding criticism and he describes working with people as: working with people of logic. He further describes complaining and criticizing as a foolish task to do and how it takes a person of character to understand, forgive, and have self-control. Principle # 2 describes the importance of honest and sincere appreciation. Within this principle he describes the importance of ending our own thinking of accomplishments and desires. Instead, we must put our focus on the other person's good qualities. If being sincere, this will cause people to cherish them in their minds, even years later. The third principle involves influencing the other person to want, but not in a way that is manipulative. With this principle, he describes the importance of self-expression and connects it to the importance of thinking in terms of the other person, so that they come up with your ideas on their own, which they will like more.Within the second part of the book, it teaches six principles. The first describes how critical it is to become interested in other people because you will make more friends compared to having others interested in you. When he moves onto the second principle, he explains the importance to smile in a heartwarming way because it will brighten the lives of those who see it. Dale then describes the importance to recall a person's name in the third principle. He gives tips on how to remember and then explains how people enjoy the sound of their own name. The fourth principle is about being a good listener and encouraging those to talk about themselves. He then goes onto to explain again that people are more interested in talking about themselves instead of others. He further explains this point in principle five: Talk in terms of the other person's interests. The final step is to sincerely make the other person feel important because this is the "deepest urge in human nature."Dale describes in the third part of the book the steps to have a person think in terms of your own thoughts. He then explains that it is better to avoid arguments and to show respect for other people's opinions and never tell them they are wrong. because it will further push them away. If there is fault in your own behavior, Dale explains to immediately admit you're wrong without any doubts. If you are upset, he explains to sit down and counsel together, and if there are differences, understand it. Even in some differences, there will be points of agreement. He then explains the importance of agreement and having the person say "yes," at least twice. You doing this by looking into the other person's viewpoint and asking questions that cause them to agree. It is essential to have friends do the talking and have them excel us, instead of excelling them. When this occurs, they will feel important. To further the notion of feeling important, it is important to have the individual create their own ideas. He deepens this idea by asking questions such as, "Why should he or she want to do it?" and then being sympathetic towards their ideas. In order to catch a person's attention, you must dramatise the ideas you have. If all else fails, he explains the importance of competition and how it drives people to feel important and empowered to work efficiently and effectively. In the final part of the book, Dale again discusses the importance of beginning with praise and honest appreciation. When someone makes a mistake, call to their mistakes indirectly. This can be done my making their mistakes your own and explaining the importance of fixing it and why it gave you a disadvantage. He then explains the importance of asking questions that direct the person you’re speaking to, to obtain your idea on their own. He emphasizes the importance of having the person be saved from embarrassment, and then explains the importance of praise again, even if it is small. Dale then gives examples of giving a person a reputation that makes them better, in order to have the person be motivated to improve. After giving someone a reputation to live up to, encourage the person to correct their faults and make them happy to do the actions you suggest.

Edit: I'm changing my rating to 3 stars, as I feel a 2 star rating for writing of this caliber is uncharitable. My personal enjoyment of the material is more on a 2 star level, however.Where to start? Positives, I suppose.- The writing is tight. No overlong exposition or unnecessary detail, prose is average or slightly better. Editing is quite a large step up from most self-pubs.- Characters are well drawn and very distinct, though virtually zero development occurs (more on that later). Many self-pub writers have difficulty writing easily distinguishable characters. Not so, in this case.- There was an air of mystery about the primary characters. The book is written from three distinct POVs, and each time we get a little bit of info on their reactions and motivations, but it’s only enough to give a glimpse of who they really are (I thought – more on this later). There are hints of rich backstory to flesh out each character.- The opening really grabbed me – legendary sword of unknown power and its mysterious wielder pairing up with a powerful undercover sorceress,Unfortunately, after the first 30-40% of the book, none of the promise that seemed so rich early in was delivered upon. The cons started to pile up, and never really stopped mounting for me:- The magic system is neat, but execution is flawed; there’s very little consistency. Some characters need auditory cues to “cast”, some don’t, some need gestures, some don’t. Each person is supposed to be bounded by affinity for a limited number of “dominions” (e.g. dreams, knowledge, metal, fire, etc), but the author plays extremely fast and loose with what can be done with each of these. It really seems that he made the system up, then just allowed the various characters to do whatever they tried to do with the only limit being how powerful they were within their domain.- The characters are extremely flat and uninteresting. There was only the barest hint of character development. It took a while to find out that they really don’t have much depth. In the end, they’re pretty much caricatures more than they are characters.Taelien is kind, gregarious, chivalrous and dumb. He acts like a complete child and this never changes. Other characters view him this way, and it fits because that’s pretty much exactly what he is. A very powerful child, but a child nonetheless. He takes his cues from Lydia throughout the book, and is pretty much powerless to act with any autonomy whatsoever.Lydia is an overbearing, condescending, arrogant bully who feels it’s her right to impose her will on others wherever she goes. The character of Moiraine in WoT fits her pretty much like a glove…except when you realize that that’s completely ridiculous because she’s about 20, and Moiraine is supposed to be over 70 or something. She thinks of (and actually refers to) Taelien as a child and mothers him the entire way through the book. She acts in a similar manner to pretty much anyone else. Some of this can be explained away when she needs to be in her frosty court sorceress persona, but early in the book she reflects on the great disparity between her undercover “ice queen” persona, and her natural, more friendly and compassionate self. Unfortunately this is just fluff, because we see only the tiniest bit of evidence that she might not actually be the former through and through. She’s calculating and thoughtful, but mostly to no real effect. She’s often afflicted with analysis paralysis, and progress pretty much just falls into her lap.Jonan was full of potential. Many reviewers called him the rogue. The funny, fun-loving sidekick. Somewhat appropriate, but his character is very similar to Lydia (intelligent and calculating, distrustful) excepting the fact that he pretty much acts like a doormat.- Characters go through the story helping others and doing things for completely inexplicable reasons. Taelien gets thrown in prison in the beginning for some reason completely unknown to him. Lydia helps break him out, and for some reason he continues to follow her like a puppy at her vague agreement to help him with his quest to find out more about himself. Now, if I had a clear goal, like find some guy (who I’ve been told can help me figure out my lineage and birthright), unless somebody or something is going to imminently help me get at this goal, I’m going to part ways from it. Instead, he gets distracted *constantly* with what I refer to as “side quests”. He’s helping a cause that he doesn’t even appear to have a strong moral reason to support. Jonan does much the same. For some reason Jonan bands together with these two people (Lydia and Taelien) that assaulted him, took him prisoner, and interrogated him, despite the fact that their ideologies are ostensibly at ends with one another. What? Later, another character attacks him by breaking into his home and smashing valuable belongings critical to his magic, and he just shrugs it off and offers to assist her for some reason. Again, what? This kind of behavior is everywhere too.- The pace of the book is worse than glacial. I read hundreds of pages of idle talk or inner monologue with no meaningful activity whatsoever. The vast bulk of the book covers discussions that occur in a matter of moments, much of it being an inner monologue from the current POV character. Eventually it just feels like a lot of churn for no reason.- The world building seemed flat. It surprised me that so many reviewers felt that this was a strong point of the novel. Then again, I categorize magic system as just that, and not related necessarily to world building. World building - to me - tells the story of the people, their cultures, their philosophy, their politics, their technological maturity, their regions and regional disputes, their resources, and so forth. I feel this novel did almost none of that. The only sense I got that the nations were different at all was the fact that they worshiped different gods. I couldn’t get a sense that there was any differentiation of ethnicities within the races (if there even were), and even the races were only described in the broadest terms.Overall, the book just felt dull and uninteresting, and I didn't identify with the characters one bit. I was very disappointed since it got rather good reviews and the beginning really grabbed me. I won’t be reading the second.

"Certainty in the face of variables is a sign of insanity."I loved this as much as I didn’t, which is why it fell into my LIKED vs. my LOVED rating. I felt like a pendulum trying to decide, but in the end there were a few more negatives than positives. But it didn’t get close to my INDIFFERENT rating, so that should say how much I liked it.I couldn’t really summarize this as the story revolves around three characters all on their own mission that ended up overlapping one other. I’m afraid if I tried I’d accidentally give something away. So the book blurb is going to have to do.The world was nicely developed, in my opinion. I never felt cheated. Matter of fact, in the beginning there’s a lot thrown at you. And I never felt like it let up. Not in a cool way, but in a let’s-get-all-this-out-now way. Normally I can go along with info dumps when it’s worked into a dialog. That happened in a lot of places, but it was sooooo long that I ended up skipping, hoping I’d understand later. I did, so yay me and yay to Rowe for keeping it clear. The world, however, never came close to the amount we learned about the magic system. Some people are going to love it. For me—and keep in mind that I love love love magic—it was too much. Much like the world building, it felt long-winded and overcomplicated. I skimmed, and I fear I payed a price for that. I think if i would have been patient, some of it could have been more entertaining.I liked the writing for the most part. Action scenes were incredible. I had a clear picture of what was happening. Those scenes were the reason this didn’t get a lower rating. They were really nifty, particularly those with Taelien. There were some typos, enough that I noticed by not enough to ruin the book for me.Now, the reason I was enjoying this so much was the characters. Taelien was a badass, and his magic was by far my favorite. Manipulating metal might sound boring, but Rowe made it fun. Super fun! Taelien's got a lot to find out about himself, and he truly wants to be a good person. He’s an easy character to root for, especially with his adventurous personality and slightly blind bravery. Our heroine, Lydia, was nicely gifted, but her magical ability of gaining knowledge about stuff just wasn’t as enthralling as magic used in a fight. Even so, she was a tough gal, collected, curious, and strong in her own right. Never a damsel in distress. Our other protagonist, Jonan, used sight magic—making himself invisible, looking through mirrors, and so forth. I never got as good of a feel for him as I did the other two. I could never quite peg his intentions.Overall, I’d recommend this to those that like a traditional upbeat fantasy. It’s short and fun. Because of Taelien I’ll be picking up the second book. I’m curious about his story and where he’ll end up.

I'll admit this one took a while to get into, since the opening chapters were very dialogue-heavy. The book also gives a lot of insight into what is happening in the characters heads, which took a bit of getting used to. However, once the book got going, I found myself really appreciating the detailed thoughts, since the characters are very logical and I love the "rationalist" genre. After the first few chapters, I was hooked (~30% on my kindle). The magic system is pretty great. I'm a fan of hard magic systems, and there are detailed rules, limitations, and costs to the magic in this book. I really appreciated the diversity of the magic, as well. As much as I love Sanderson's magic systems, sometimes they are fairly limited. Forging Divinity has magic of all types: physical, elemental, healing, knowledge, illusion, etc.The worldbuilding is also great. Godhood can be sold to the highest bidder? Awesome. Multiple conspiracies, a looming war, original races that are tied into the magic system? Even better. The characters are good as well, though not as strong as the worldbuilding. Each of the three main characters has access to different magic types, has their own hidden agendas that you slowly learn about, and distinct personalities. One is overly analytical about everything, one is a hotheaded warrior, and one is a secretive spy who relies on illusions instead of direct magics.Overall, the book was a slow start but a great read. I've bought the second and am looking forward to reading it in the near future. I might have to put the sequel off for a bit, because once I hit the 30% mark of this one I pretty much couldn't put it down (so much for being productive this week).
