(For those who don’t want to look it up, a “trigger warning” is a blurb that intimates that a work has words or images that may induce a traumatic reaction.) However, these stories are Gaiman to the core, which means they are humorous, clever, and often quirky; but they are unlikely to throw one into catatonia or an apoplectic fit. The pieces include Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who stories, spin-offs from Sleeping Beauty and American Gods, as well as a few homages to other authors, including Ray Bradbury, Gene Wolfe, and William Blake.Without further ado, I’ll give a rundown of the included works:1.) “Making a Chair”: This is a poem about writer’s block.2.) “A Lunar Labyrinth”: An homage to Gene Wolfe’s work, “Solar Labyrinth.” This short story is about a maze that was destroyed, and that wasn’t to be walked on full moon nights.3.) “The Thing About Cassandra”: This is among my favorite stories in the collection. It’s about a person riding in a lifeboat down the Thames toward the sea.5.) “The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains”: This one was inspired by an island off Scotland called Skye, but the story is fantasy with magic elements. A man strikes out in search of revenge and closing, regarding a daughter who he thought had run away. This is one of the most engaging pieces in the collection.6.) “My Last Landlady”: This is a story, conveyed in poetic form, about a mean landlady.7.) “Adventure Story”: In the Introduction, Gaiman calls this a companion piece to his novella “The Ocean at the End of the Lane.” However, I didn’t make that connection, (and I’ve read that story.) At any rate, it’s a great story about an intriguing artifact left behind by a [deceased] father whose stories were always painfully dull. It’s told by a mother to a son who is incredulous that his, seemingly milquetoast, father lived through such a fascinating event.8.) “Orange”: Like several of the pieces in this book, this one is unconventional / experimental. However, it’s creative, and it works. It consists of answers to a questionnaire, from which the reader pieces together the story. One doesn’t have the questions, but most of them are fairly clear from the context of the answer.9.) “Calendar of Tales”: This is what it sounds like, 12 stories each matched to a month. It’s another of the unconventional and unusual pieces. Each story was spun from a tweet response to a question about a given month of the year.10.) “The Case of Death and Honey”: Few characters in the public domain have spurred as many offshoot stories as Sherlock Holmes, and this is Gaiman’s entry in the pool. Holmes’s interest in bee-keeping is central to the story.11.) “The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury”: An homage to Bradbury. If one forgets a person, did they ever exist?12.) “Jerusalem”: This work was influenced both by a poem by William Blake and a trip the author took to said city. The story is about a couple of tourists and the unique mental illness associated with this locale.13.) “Click-Clack the Rattlebag”: A scary bedtime story told by a child about a different kind of monster.14.) “An Invocation of Incuriosity”: A story about one of the strange and colorful people one might meet at a flea market.15.) “’And Weep, Like Alexander’”: A light-hearted story about an “un-inventor,” one who keeps you from having flying cars and all the other promised technology from sci-fi.16.) “Nothing O’Clock”: This is a “Doctor Who” story. It’s not necessary to be familiar with the series (necessary backstory is provided), but it could make it more appealing—i.e. the inside joke effect.17.) “Diamonds and Pearls: A Fairy Tale”: This is from “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?” Palmer is a cabaret-punk singer/songwriter and Gaiman’s wife, and the aforementioned booklet consists of a series of photos of Palmer looking deceased with brief stories to go along. This is one of the stories that could stand alone. It’s a fairy tale of the adults-only variety.18.) “The Return of the Thin White Duke”: Another fairy tale, this one about a Duke that strikes out on a quest for adventure in order to rescue a Queen who doesn’t need rescuing.19.) “Feminine Endings”: A story about a human statue—by that I mean one of those people who deck themselves out and stand on a box in the town square in touristy places in many parts of the world.20.) “Observing the Formalities”: A poem about one who doesn’t get invited.21.) “The Sleeper and the Spindle”: A take on the story of “Sleeping Beauty,” but from a different point of view.22.) “Witch Work”: This is another poem. I believe it’s the only one that’s not free verse. It’s about the life of a witch.23.) “In Relig Odhrain”: This is a true story about a saint, written in free verse.24.) “Black Dog”: This is a spin-off from the novel “American Gods” and it features that book’s protagonist, Shadow. You don’t need to have read that book, but you might have a greater affinity for the story if you have. It should also be noted that this is the one piece that is original to this collection, and it’s one of the most substantial pieces in the collection. i.e. it gives fans a reason to pick up the book even if they’ve read a lot of it from the original source.I enjoyed this book. Gaiman is a masterful story teller. Whether it’s one of conventional pieces based in established worlds (e.g. “Doctor Who” or that of Sherlock Holmes) or one of the off-the-wall, experimental pieces, these stories and poems are a pleasure to read.

I love this author. I know that anything he writes will be awesome, so I happily bought this book. And I wish I hadn’t. It was awful, painful, and a waste of time & money.There were a few actual stories that were good, my fave being the last one about Shadow. As for the other 95% of the book...I don’t know what I was reading. They definitely weren’t stories. More like a weird jumble of random unfinished thoughts. They made no sense, or very little sense. I had to force myself to keep reading this book. At least the last story was good. But after reading this, I would not buy any of his recent or new books in case they were like this. I’m very disappointed and sad.

Trigger Warnings is full of the creepy and the unsettling, but also full of rich characters.My favorite stories were "The Truth is a Cave in the Dark Mountains," a different kind of treasure seeking tale, "The Case of Death and Honey," where Sherlock tries to crack his hardest case, "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who story, "Diamonds and Pearls," a very contemporary fairy tale, "Feminine Endings," creepiest love letter ever, "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a perfect fairytale retelling, and "Black Dog," where Shadow encounters the surreal in a seemingly very normal town. Oddly, I'm not a huge American Gods fan, yet I loved the short story.Obviously, with so many favorites, this is an excellent collection. It could also be a great entry point for those unfamiliar with Neil Gaiman.Making a Chair: Poem comparing writing to making a chair. 2.5/5A Lunar Labyrinth: A traveler likes to visit bizarre sites, but may get more than he bargained for when he goes to a burned down lunar labyrinth. 3/5The Thing About Cassandra: An artist finds out that the girl he made up and drew as a teenager has been speaking to his friends and family. A reread. 4/5Down to a Sunless Sea: Flash fiction. And old woman walks in the rain, and there's a bone around her neck. A reread. 4/5"The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains...": A dwarf asks a farmer to show him the way to the cave in the mountains that holds gold, though gold that comes at a price. This one really hit me. 5/5My Last Landlady: A creepy poem. 4/5Adventure Story: Flash fiction about an adventure a mother won't talk about. Listened to a version of this first on NPR. 3.5/5Orange: Transcript from a teenager about her sister, and turning orange. Cute. I may have read this before. 4/5A Calendar of Tales: A tale for each month. Some are really great. Rhythm stuck with me. 4/5Black Dog: Shadow from American Gods stops at a small town on his travels where he stays for a short time with a couple who are hiding something. Love the mix of magic and thriller. 4.5/5

I have just read the book. I am very knowledgeable about the scientific research on the effects of marijuana.The authors give a ton of factual information in the book. The book is easy to read.The authors give their opinions at the end of the book. All 3 differ. They also jointly give parameters at the end of the book regarding what controls they believe there should be with legalization. They believe that there should be significantly more control with legalization than there currently has been in any of the states that have legalized with the exception of Vermont.I would highly recommend the book. It is written by public policy experts who do not have a particular dog in the marijuana legalization fight. It is balanced and will help readers understand the different types of plans that one could use when legalizing marijuana. So far, in all states except Vermont, it has been one size fits all. But there are other ways to do this and the authors do a good job at describing these other ways.Unless you already know a good amount about this topic, you will come away knowing a lot more.

This is a good book written by people who write for the RAND corporation, a well known think tank, often employed by the government and other large organizations. It is thorough and a more scholarly writing than most books on marijuana. The authors point out many of the pros and cons that may be associated with marijuana legalization. In most cases they note that much of what is stated today by proponents as well as opponents of legalization is currently not able to be verified scientifically. They frequently use the phrase "unintended consequences" when talking about legalization. In one of the later chapters the four authors each summarize their own position. Only one would not legalize or make many changes to current laws the other three all would like to see changes made but each has concerns and each vary in his/her approach to legalization. I had previously read Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink (2nd edition) and this book, along with additional research tempered my views. I now would like to see the Federal government turn this question over to the states, and have the DEA reduce marijuana from its current Schedule 1 status to a Schedule 3, 4 or 5.

There are many books and other sources of information with strong points of view, pro and con, for legalization of marijuana. There are precious few that give a balanced view on both sides of the issue, and this one is essential reading for anyone who wants to be informed, who hasn't already made up their minds.Some of the facts covered here:Americans are increasingly open to the idea. Rasmussen released a poll in May, 2012 which found that 56 percent of Americans were in favor of "legalizing marijuana and regulating it in a similar manner to the way alcohol and tobacco cigarettes are regulated today." Older Americans tended to be much more negative than younger Americans, so it may be that the pressure to legalize will continue to grow.A key analysis: legal Marijuana might be incredibly cheap. As the authors point out, marijuana is a nonperishable bulk commodity like wheat, corn, coffee and tea. For those kinds of commodities, cost of production is the key driver. Modern American agriculture and its related packaging and transportation methods are incredibly efficient, especially on a large scale and in areas conducive to large yields.Canada produces industrial hemp industry for about $500 per acre. If mid-grade commercial marijuana (a similar plant) could be grown at that cost, the price to the consumer would be about 20 cents per pound. Better grades of marijuana would cost more; as the authors write: "production costs for crops that need to be transplanted, such as cherry tomatoes and asparagus, are generally in the range of $5,000-$20,000 per acre." Those more labor intensive crops suggest a consumer price of under $20 per pound to less than $5 a pound depending on quality. Those prices compare with price of "other legal herbs such as tea or tobacco ... 100 times lower than the current prevailing price of $300 per ounce --- or a few cents per joint."Whether you support or oppose legalization, this data is useful: increases in consumption might be very high, but tax revenues might be significantly higher as well. Federal cigarette taxes bring in about $10 billion a year, but the authors believe legalization couldn't yield revenues at that level.Nonetheless, it is very helpful to have firm data from which to reach policy decisions, and the authors provide that sort of information -- not only on the costs of production and possible tax revenues, but on other possible benefits -- and disadvantages. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the issues.Robert C. RossJuly 2012Addendum: It may be worth mentioning that I have never used marijuana -- my drug of choice is five to ten glasses of red wine a week -- but the issue of legalization seems very important to me as a policy matter. In some ways I am not sure how to review this book. It reads more like a very critical piece with much discussion of addiction/dependance which the authors weave into most topics. While not addictive, a few people, especially young people, can certainly become dependent but it seemed to me cannabis dependence is over stated. I think one thing of value here is an honest discussion of some claims about the economics of legalization. However, having said that, I also think the authors give short shrift to hemp. The extrapolate from current use which does not strike me as valid. If hemp was legal, I believe many more uses as well as the economies of scale would result in a healthy, environmentally friendly industry. I recommend that those who advocate legalization as I do, should read this book so as to help keep their discussions more factual. If this review seems to vacillate between positive and negative it is because does but that's the value of the book.

The authors describe the behavioral effects of marijuana, the harms, the various ways to ingest the drug, the medical benefits and the implications on driving after marijuana use. They bring us up-to-date on what has happened in the states that have legalized marijuana and make estimates for the future. Just an excellent book!

Book is very small and tore apart at the seam the first time I opened it. It is only attached by a very small area - which I tried to reinforce with tape. It tore apart again the first time my grandson opened it and he was not being rough on it. Sure wish it would have been much more sturdy.

Who Was Harriet Beecher Stowe?   During the 1800s, the economy of the southern United States boomed with the production of cotton. Many white plantation owners became rich growing it. They relied on black slaves to work their fields and harvest the cotton. These slaves were not treated as people. They were property to buy and sell, just like livestock or farm equipment.   In 1850, the US Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act. It stated that anyone caught giving food, shelter, or help of any kind to an escaped slave would have to pay a $1,000 fine and spend six months in jail. The people of the United States had long been divided over the issue of slavery. This new law meant that even those who were against slavery could offer no help. If they assisted runaway slaves in any way, they would be breaking the law. Slaves who managed to escape to the North could not be protected.   When this law passed, Harriet Beecher Stowe was a writer and mother, living in Brunswick, Maine. She and her family had long been against slavery. But she was especially horrified by stories she heard of slave owners forcibly taking back slaves who had escaped to freedom. No black man, woman, or child was safe.   Harriet’s sister-in-law wrote to her saying, “Hattie, if I could use a pen as you can, I would write something to make this whole nation feel what an accursed thing slavery is!” After reading the letter, Harriet got up from her chair, crushed the paper in her hands, and declared, “I will write something. I will if I live.”   Harriet Beecher Stowe went on to write one of the most famous books in US history, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. She worried that no one would listen to what she had to say.   But they did.   Uncle Tom’s Cabin was not only an instant success. It changed the course of history. Harriet’s book revealed the horrors of slavery. It fueled the tensions that led to the Civil War.   Her words helped inspire people to change. Her story helped bring an end to slavery in the United States.     Chapter 1: A Busy Household     Harriet Beecher was born on June 14, 1811, in the small New England town of Litchfield, Connecticut. Her father, Reverend Lyman Beecher, had hoped for a boy whom he wanted to name Henry. But his wife, Roxana, gave birth to a girl instead. They chose to name her Harriet, and called her Hattie for short.   The house was already quite full of children when Hattie became the sixth child in the Beecher household. After Hattie, Roxana had two more boys. Hattie was always surrounded by family. Her grandmother and aunt lived right down a garden path from her own house. Because Hattie’s father was a Congregational minister in town, the Beecher house on the upper end of North Street was often filled with visitors.   The family suffered a great loss when Hattie was only five. Her mother died of tuberculosis in September 1816. Later in life, Harriet wrote: “I remember the mourning dresses, the tears of the older children, the walking to the burial ground, and somebody’s speaking at the grave . . . we little ones, to whom it was so confused, asked the question where she was gone and would she ever come back?”   Lyman thought it might be good for Hattie to escape the sadness of the household. Hattie went to live with her other grandmother, aunt, and uncle in Nut Plains, Connecticut. The night Hattie arrived, the outside of their home struck her as a “lonely little white farmhouse.” But her worries calmed when she entered the parlor, where a cozy fire crackled in welcome.   Here, Aunt Harriet turned all of her attention onto little Hattie. She taught Hattie how to knit and sew. She taught her manners and prayers. Hattie spent her time memorizing hymns, poems, and quotes from the Bible. She was intrigued by the treasures around the house brought back by her uncle, Samuel Foote, a sea captain. The house was filled with exotic items, such as fabrics from India, bells from China, and incense from Spain. Hattie stayed in Nut Plains for almost a year before she returned to her family in Litchfield.   Back at home, the household didn’t go without a mother for long. Lyman was preaching in Boston when he met another Harriet—Miss Harriet Porter. They married in the fall of 1817. Hattie remembered the night her new mother arrived in Litchfield. Hattie was sharing a bedroom with her younger brothers when she met her for the first time. She later wrote, “A beautiful lady, very fair, with bright blue eyes, and soft auburn hair . . . came into the room smiling, eager, and happy-looking . . . and told us that she loved little children, and that she would be our mother.” Lyman and Harriet Porter had two more children together while in Litchfield.   Hattie grew up in a very religious home. Her father was a powerful, energetic, and famous preacher. He believed that people were born sinful and needed to pray to God to save them so they could enter heaven when they died. Lyman was determined to save souls—both in his congregation and elsewhere. Throughout New England, he was called to help lead revival events. He was strict with his children and required them to obey him. He did not believe in the rituals of other branches of Christianity, such as celebrating Easter and Christmas.   Even though Lyman was busy as a spiritual leader in their community, he still made time to play with his children. The Beecher family was happy and supportive of one another.   Hattie later wrote that she was raised in “a great household inspired by a spirit of cheerfulness and hilarity.” The family chopped wood together and shook chestnuts from trees. They gathered in the kitchen to peel apples for apple butter in the fall. While they worked, their father asked questions and led debates. He entertained them with pranks and by playing the fiddle. At a time when girls were not given as many opportunities as boys, the Beecher family, full of both boys and girls, treated one another equally.   When Hattie had a moment alone, she could be found with a book. Her father’s study was one of her favorite rooms. “High above all the noise of the house,” she wrote, “this room had to me the air of a refuge and a sanctuary. Its walls were set round from floor to ceiling with the friendly, quiet faces of books.” She would sit in the corner of this room reading while her father wrote at his desk. Searching for more to read one day, she riffled through a barrel where her father kept his sermons. Underneath the old papers, she found a copy of Arabian Nights, a collection of folktales from Asia and the Middle East. She treasured it and read it over and over again.   Lyman preferred that Hattie only read religious books. He called novels “trash” and considered them evil. But Uncle Samuel had traveled the world and seen many cultures. He liked reading stories himself and convinced Lyman to change his mind. Hattie’s father finally gave in. Poetry and novels became a part of the Beecher household, and Hattie read whatever she could get her hands on.

These books are really good as i read them myself to refresh my memories....as i did get them for my grandson to use later in school as he is only 4 yrs now.

Yes, I love this book. I have not finished it yet, nonetheless I can taste the experience, it is so good. Great read for anyone who loves visiting Latin or Central American countries.

I read parts of it before going to Chiapas Mexico and then I read the section on Chiapas. It was fascinating to read his remarks and descriptions of what I was seeing. He writes very descriptive pictures.

Republished edition is one of the best and most comprehensive impressions of the era - during the Guatemalan Civil War - and its effects on the Maya populations in the surrounding countries.

Well written and endlessly fascinating.

I purchased this book to learn a bit more about the Maya before I take a trip to visit ancient Maya sites this fall. The book does present some interesting information on the ancient Maya, particularly, their calendar and system of time. It spends more time discussing the problems faced by the Maya of today, which is enlightening, but I feel it spends too much time discussing politics and what is wrong with the governments in Maya lands today than what I need to prepare for my trip. I do feel that an understanding of the situation is important to have before visiting a third world country; I just find this a bit overburdening in light of what I need and want to know, especially since it reflects the situation in 1985. It does not tell me what to expect TODAY.

Although I found some information interesting and informative, the delivery was much too long. Far too many descriptions of scenes where one photo could have replaced three pages of text. In fact, he travels with his friend David who is taking photos... he should have used them! Very repetitious and redundant, really belaboring simple points that could be explained in one third the words. However I was reading to learn facts, I was not reading for entertainment. I cannot recommend this book for learning; but if you want a travelogue of one person's interpretations of his trip, this works well.

Time among the Maya, Ronald WrightThis is a charming travelogue, particularly if you have experienced travel to some of the Maya Indian sites. Ronald Wright has given us an insight that could only be possible from someone who has spent considerable time and research into the politics and plight of the Maya people. There are some helpful maps for orientation. The writing is like a daily journal, which is charming in its observations and the attempts at a phonetic impression of the speech of the various populations that he encounters in his journey. There are references to some of the masterworks of more early explorers, such as John L. Stephens, with excellent drawings by Catherwood (Dover Publications), and the helpful translation of Popol Vuh by Dennis Tedlock. Ronald Wright gives us "food for thought" about the terrible things that have occurred in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico, as various political factions have battled for control.

At first this book appears to be merely a travelogue of Wright's journeys through the Maya areas of Mexico and Central America. Sure, he gives us the goods on the ancient Maya ruins and archeological treasures, plus a lot of great historical coverage, but these turn out to be the background of a much larger narrative. Instead, Wright spends the bulk of his time visiting with the local people, both modern Mayas and non-Mayas who inhabit these regions today. Therefore we get an excellent sociological study on these peoples. I was surprised to learn of the large numbers of Maya that still exist, not just as an ancient fringe religious group, but as a sizeable portion of the populations of Guatemala, Belize, and Southern Mexico. Unfortunately these people still deal with the fallout of nearly 500 years of oppression, and continuing discrimination today. Their resulting hardships are a major focus of the book. Wright also has a flair for picking out offbeat and enjoyable characters among the people he meets, like the nearly-Rasta mestizos of Belize and a variety of befuddled and naïve traveling companions. Wright could stand to be a little less biased at times, especially in the portion of the book that deals with Guatemala. Wright gets really carried away in describing this dreary nation as a hopeless hellhole. This characterization is probably not too far from reality, but impartiality is missing at times in this book. (Note that this was written back in the mid-80's, though it's doubtful if much has changed since then). Also, pictures of the many fascinating areas Wright visited would be a nice addition to this book. You have to rely on Wright's descriptions instead, although he does a pretty good job. Ultimately, this book is less a standard travelogue than an entertaining and very enlightening sociological study on a people who are still going strong even though their culture "collapsed" (in Western eyes) centuries and centuries ago.
