Who Was Harriet Beecher Stowe?   During the 1800s, the economy of the southern United States boomed with the production of cotton. Many white plantation owners became rich growing it. They relied on black slaves to work their fields and harvest the cotton. These slaves were not treated as people. They were property to buy and sell, just like livestock or farm equipment.   In 1850, the US Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act. It stated that anyone caught giving food, shelter, or help of any kind to an escaped slave would have to pay a $1,000 fine and spend six months in jail. The people of the United States had long been divided over the issue of slavery. This new law meant that even those who were against slavery could offer no help. If they assisted runaway slaves in any way, they would be breaking the law. Slaves who managed to escape to the North could not be protected.   When this law passed, Harriet Beecher Stowe was a writer and mother, living in Brunswick, Maine. She and her family had long been against slavery. But she was especially horrified by stories she heard of slave owners forcibly taking back slaves who had escaped to freedom. No black man, woman, or child was safe.   Harriet’s sister-in-law wrote to her saying, “Hattie, if I could use a pen as you can, I would write something to make this whole nation feel what an accursed thing slavery is!” After reading the letter, Harriet got up from her chair, crushed the paper in her hands, and declared, “I will write something. I will if I live.”   Harriet Beecher Stowe went on to write one of the most famous books in US history, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. She worried that no one would listen to what she had to say.   But they did.   Uncle Tom’s Cabin was not only an instant success. It changed the course of history. Harriet’s book revealed the horrors of slavery. It fueled the tensions that led to the Civil War.   Her words helped inspire people to change. Her story helped bring an end to slavery in the United States.     Chapter 1: A Busy Household     Harriet Beecher was born on June 14, 1811, in the small New England town of Litchfield, Connecticut. Her father, Reverend Lyman Beecher, had hoped for a boy whom he wanted to name Henry. But his wife, Roxana, gave birth to a girl instead. They chose to name her Harriet, and called her Hattie for short.   The house was already quite full of children when Hattie became the sixth child in the Beecher household. After Hattie, Roxana had two more boys. Hattie was always surrounded by family. Her grandmother and aunt lived right down a garden path from her own house. Because Hattie’s father was a Congregational minister in town, the Beecher house on the upper end of North Street was often filled with visitors.   The family suffered a great loss when Hattie was only five. Her mother died of tuberculosis in September 1816. Later in life, Harriet wrote: “I remember the mourning dresses, the tears of the older children, the walking to the burial ground, and somebody’s speaking at the grave . . . we little ones, to whom it was so confused, asked the question where she was gone and would she ever come back?”   Lyman thought it might be good for Hattie to escape the sadness of the household. Hattie went to live with her other grandmother, aunt, and uncle in Nut Plains, Connecticut. The night Hattie arrived, the outside of their home struck her as a “lonely little white farmhouse.” But her worries calmed when she entered the parlor, where a cozy fire crackled in welcome.   Here, Aunt Harriet turned all of her attention onto little Hattie. She taught Hattie how to knit and sew. She taught her manners and prayers. Hattie spent her time memorizing hymns, poems, and quotes from the Bible. She was intrigued by the treasures around the house brought back by her uncle, Samuel Foote, a sea captain. The house was filled with exotic items, such as fabrics from India, bells from China, and incense from Spain. Hattie stayed in Nut Plains for almost a year before she returned to her family in Litchfield.   Back at home, the household didn’t go without a mother for long. Lyman was preaching in Boston when he met another Harriet—Miss Harriet Porter. They married in the fall of 1817. Hattie remembered the night her new mother arrived in Litchfield. Hattie was sharing a bedroom with her younger brothers when she met her for the first time. She later wrote, “A beautiful lady, very fair, with bright blue eyes, and soft auburn hair . . . came into the room smiling, eager, and happy-looking . . . and told us that she loved little children, and that she would be our mother.” Lyman and Harriet Porter had two more children together while in Litchfield.   Hattie grew up in a very religious home. Her father was a powerful, energetic, and famous preacher. He believed that people were born sinful and needed to pray to God to save them so they could enter heaven when they died. Lyman was determined to save souls—both in his congregation and elsewhere. Throughout New England, he was called to help lead revival events. He was strict with his children and required them to obey him. He did not believe in the rituals of other branches of Christianity, such as celebrating Easter and Christmas.   Even though Lyman was busy as a spiritual leader in their community, he still made time to play with his children. The Beecher family was happy and supportive of one another.   Hattie later wrote that she was raised in “a great household inspired by a spirit of cheerfulness and hilarity.” The family chopped wood together and shook chestnuts from trees. They gathered in the kitchen to peel apples for apple butter in the fall. While they worked, their father asked questions and led debates. He entertained them with pranks and by playing the fiddle. At a time when girls were not given as many opportunities as boys, the Beecher family, full of both boys and girls, treated one another equally.   When Hattie had a moment alone, she could be found with a book. Her father’s study was one of her favorite rooms. “High above all the noise of the house,” she wrote, “this room had to me the air of a refuge and a sanctuary. Its walls were set round from floor to ceiling with the friendly, quiet faces of books.” She would sit in the corner of this room reading while her father wrote at his desk. Searching for more to read one day, she riffled through a barrel where her father kept his sermons. Underneath the old papers, she found a copy of Arabian Nights, a collection of folktales from Asia and the Middle East. She treasured it and read it over and over again.   Lyman preferred that Hattie only read religious books. He called novels “trash” and considered them evil. But Uncle Samuel had traveled the world and seen many cultures. He liked reading stories himself and convinced Lyman to change his mind. Hattie’s father finally gave in. Poetry and novels became a part of the Beecher household, and Hattie read whatever she could get her hands on.

Mrs. Rau's nonfiction books are a staple in my classroom. Most popular are her planet books and the big head biographies. This one is an incredible resource for teaching people in CT history and author's that have influenced America. A must have.

These books are really good as i read them myself to refresh my memories....as i did get them for my grandson to use later in school as he is only 4 yrs now.

Granddaughter loves this series. We plan to visit Harriet Beecher Stowe's home.

Who was series is fantastic!

It was very good and educational. The history A+!

Fantastic book for kids

I had to read this book for AR as required by my school, but despite that I really enjoyed this book

Did Harriet Beecher Stowe start the Civil War? Abraham Lincoln may have greeted her with a statement to that effect! In 1851, Harriet was horrified by slavery and set out to write a few episodes of a story detailing the cruelty of slavery. It ended up being 40 chapters and turned into the controversial novel UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. The book was not well received by the public because it shed such a spotlight on the horrors against humankind that slavery is. It was dangerous to even own the book in the South. This is an interesting illustrated biography from the extensive WHO IS...?/WHO WAS...? biography series with almost 100 names available.

Yes, I love this book. I have not finished it yet, nonetheless I can taste the experience, it is so good. Great read for anyone who loves visiting Latin or Central American countries.

I read parts of it before going to Chiapas Mexico and then I read the section on Chiapas. It was fascinating to read his remarks and descriptions of what I was seeing. He writes very descriptive pictures.

Republished edition is one of the best and most comprehensive impressions of the era - during the Guatemalan Civil War - and its effects on the Maya populations in the surrounding countries.

Well written and endlessly fascinating.

I purchased this book to learn a bit more about the Maya before I take a trip to visit ancient Maya sites this fall. The book does present some interesting information on the ancient Maya, particularly, their calendar and system of time. It spends more time discussing the problems faced by the Maya of today, which is enlightening, but I feel it spends too much time discussing politics and what is wrong with the governments in Maya lands today than what I need to prepare for my trip. I do feel that an understanding of the situation is important to have before visiting a third world country; I just find this a bit overburdening in light of what I need and want to know, especially since it reflects the situation in 1985. It does not tell me what to expect TODAY.

Although I found some information interesting and informative, the delivery was much too long. Far too many descriptions of scenes where one photo could have replaced three pages of text. In fact, he travels with his friend David who is taking photos... he should have used them! Very repetitious and redundant, really belaboring simple points that could be explained in one third the words. However I was reading to learn facts, I was not reading for entertainment. I cannot recommend this book for learning; but if you want a travelogue of one person's interpretations of his trip, this works well.

Time among the Maya, Ronald WrightThis is a charming travelogue, particularly if you have experienced travel to some of the Maya Indian sites. Ronald Wright has given us an insight that could only be possible from someone who has spent considerable time and research into the politics and plight of the Maya people. There are some helpful maps for orientation. The writing is like a daily journal, which is charming in its observations and the attempts at a phonetic impression of the speech of the various populations that he encounters in his journey. There are references to some of the masterworks of more early explorers, such as John L. Stephens, with excellent drawings by Catherwood (Dover Publications), and the helpful translation of Popol Vuh by Dennis Tedlock. Ronald Wright gives us "food for thought" about the terrible things that have occurred in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico, as various political factions have battled for control.

At first this book appears to be merely a travelogue of Wright's journeys through the Maya areas of Mexico and Central America. Sure, he gives us the goods on the ancient Maya ruins and archeological treasures, plus a lot of great historical coverage, but these turn out to be the background of a much larger narrative. Instead, Wright spends the bulk of his time visiting with the local people, both modern Mayas and non-Mayas who inhabit these regions today. Therefore we get an excellent sociological study on these peoples. I was surprised to learn of the large numbers of Maya that still exist, not just as an ancient fringe religious group, but as a sizeable portion of the populations of Guatemala, Belize, and Southern Mexico. Unfortunately these people still deal with the fallout of nearly 500 years of oppression, and continuing discrimination today. Their resulting hardships are a major focus of the book. Wright also has a flair for picking out offbeat and enjoyable characters among the people he meets, like the nearly-Rasta mestizos of Belize and a variety of befuddled and naïve traveling companions. Wright could stand to be a little less biased at times, especially in the portion of the book that deals with Guatemala. Wright gets really carried away in describing this dreary nation as a hopeless hellhole. This characterization is probably not too far from reality, but impartiality is missing at times in this book. (Note that this was written back in the mid-80's, though it's doubtful if much has changed since then). Also, pictures of the many fascinating areas Wright visited would be a nice addition to this book. You have to rely on Wright's descriptions instead, although he does a pretty good job. Ultimately, this book is less a standard travelogue than an entertaining and very enlightening sociological study on a people who are still going strong even though their culture "collapsed" (in Western eyes) centuries and centuries ago.

Arab MiGs. Volume 5: October 1973 War, Part 1, by Tom Cooper

Review

"Harpia Publishing's brilliant Arab MiGs series remains among aviation history's most vital – and vibrant – research quests. And newly released Volume 5 categorically confirms that...over 50 of co-author Cooper's unfailingly excellent color profiles – many with corresponding dorsal schemes and paint matches – superbly sample the sumptuous swath of Arab warplane camouflage...Robustly recommended!" (CyberModeler)"...heavily illustrated series featuring a veritable encyclopedia of facts and history. Photos and art reproduction in the series are first rate, as are the maps that hep readers pinpoint the numerous airfields by used by Arab and Israeli squadrons..." (Aviation History)

About the Author

Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Following a career in worldwide transportation business – during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa – he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts (about which he has collected extensive archives). That resulted in specialisation in such Middle Eastern air forces as those of Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria - plus various African and Asian air forces. As well as writing and co-writing 25 other books and more than 400 articles, he has co-written an in-depth analysis of major Arab air forces at war with Israel during the period 1955-73 - resulting in the six-volume book series Arab MiGs.Dr David Nicolle is an acknowledged expert on medieval military history, specializing in the Middle East.

The fifth volume of this groundbreaking, somewhat revisionist, series covers late 1970 through the first few days of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war. (Volume 6 presumably covers the remainder of the war.)As with the preceding four volumes, this book provides the Arab perspective mostly through interviews with former pilots, and most of the available published sources. Because much of this material has never before been published, and is at odds with many sources (which predominantly rely on Israeli information), it frequently contradicts the established line, and challenges many old assumptions. In this volume the authors explicitly take their critics to task more frequently and more explicitly than in past volumes, it seems to me.This volume has some particularly nice aspects, especially the coverage of helicopter assaults and special operations in the 1973 war, which shed light on this poorly-understood aspect of the ground war in Sinai. Some excellent appendices include excerpts of Egyptian pilot's logs and a photo-gallery of Egyptian squadron commanders. Photographs, maps and illustrations are excellent as always. My major criticism of this volume is the editing, which seems poorer than earlier volumes. There are some sloppy typos which a spell-checker program could easily have caught, and the footnotes in Chapter 3 in particular need serious editing, they read like they were written by a verbose non-English speaker.

The ideal reference book for Arab Aircraft and airwar in the Middle-east. This series arguably could be the best ever produced.

These are excellent books by Harpia. I have bought all of their Arab MiGs series (and the Mirage series) and really enjoy all of them. Great easy to read text, with lots of details and excellent photos make these books ones I look at often, even after reading them once. Shop around as the prices can vary some. Buy the series and you'll not be disappointed. You will learn a lot from them!

A pandora box , simply amazing , thanks.

Truly awesome book.

We owe this one man, well, our childhood. The essence of this whole line of SCARRY BOOKS,the trick, the gimmick, is the Intricacy. The images engage as your child pours over the pages like a Where's Waldo, with a deep story line that comes forth from imaginations. The man, Scarry, comes through in the work, an eternal child,a gentle soul.A must for Richard Scarry collectors, this is a Scarry work in a line of suggested books with the similar styles and function.WHY SCARRY BOOKS?Our daughter was just accepted into Northwestern's most competitive program, basically like getting into Julliard for smart people. She has the highest verbal skills of any child I have ever seen. She tests "off the charts".She taught herself to read using, yes, Richard Scarry books at age four.Another parent of a genius will give you the same testimonial. Two geniuses of children's media....Richard Scarry and Hans Beck.

My pre-school aged son loves these books. Many of our copies are from my wife's childhood and this particular one had seen better days so we bought an additional copy to read (while preserving my wife's sentimental but badly abused copy). My only complaint is that It's not good for bed time because your child will stay up excited about every little detail in these wondrous and numerously illustrations wanting to know the names and story of each little morsel of a drawing.

My kids loved the books by richard scarry years ago, so I bought this one for grandkids. Im going to collect several different ones for them. My kids never tired of reading this book several times a week. They loved the pictures and memorized the words.

Lowly Worm, Goldbug, Sergeant Murphy...Richard Scarry enthralled my two sons and now 30+ years later my twin grandsons. These are books toddlers can spend hours with on their own (yay!). Goldbug isn't in this one, but the boys enjoy looking for Lowly in all kinds of crazy places, not to mention checking out all the movement and funny characters (Bananas Gorilla appears in this book). So, two generations and still a very favorite.I was delighted to find this book via an Amazon seller, and at a good price.

Bout it to replace the one my son destroyed. It is a little different from the older version we had.

Always a smart purchase for grandchildren.

my grandkids love these books, mostly for the busy drawings

My children had this book when they were little and we read it almost every day, so when my first grandchild came along I had to have a copy for him (I couldn't give up mine!). The condition was actually pretty good, the pages were fine, but the cover showed wear. What can you expect for a used book. This book isn't corny like some of the newer ones.

My son loves everything cars but I'm not a fan of how the story makes tow mater a liar or something. I'm not sure if this book is part of that tall-tales series?

My daughter is a big cars fan and has really enjoyed the series of Mater tales. Heavy metal Mater is her favorite.

I was forced to write this review in order to read pat page 3. I don't have an opinion yet.

About the Author

I first arrived in Ecuador in 2012 with a suitcase and a half-baked idea to travel and practice Spanish for three months. I was immediately fascinated by the culture, natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. My big breakthrough came when a Galapagos tourism company hired me to write their travel blog. I was thrilled to find a reason to stay in Ecuador and make regular trips to the islands. Three months quickly turned into three years.I'm an animal lover and literal tree-hugger, so the Galapagos is my dream destination. I learned to navigate the local mercados, biked across the islands, swam with sharks, and climbed volcanos. The changing seasons, animal life cycles, and ongoing conservation research on the islands means there is always something new to see and learn.

I loved the fact this book focuses on Galapagos Islands instead of just being a "section" of the Ecuador book. Loved the maps. Really loved the wildlife section. With that it is a complete book!!! It has sections on Quito and another gateway city. I was pleasantly surprised some of my lodging selections appears as great choices. I liked some hints like where to dine to avoid pesky mosquitos. I think the book will be helpful for the trip. Can't wait to get back to reading it.

This Travel Guide is a valuable resource that is fun to read. It is well-organized and the photos are breath-taking. I enjoyed the cultural and historical information in addition to useful travel advice. The book assists one to select a budget and the type of tour. It describes multiple options for planning a memorable trip. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Galápagos Islands.

This book really has an effective amount of critical information to plan a trip. While I did not find the reading engaging, it was the content one needs to understand the nature of today's visit to the Galapagos Islands. It was well illustrated (maps very helpful) and photos excellent.

Comprehensive guide. Al you need to know. Nice tips.No very many guides covering only the Galapagos. Highly recommend it.

This book is exactly what I was looking for! So glad I chose this author over others & will definitely buy her other travel books.
