This is a fantastic book! Tommy Gong traces Bruce Lee's evolution as a Martial Artist from his Wing Chun roots (at age 13) in China, through his different "phases" upon moving to America (Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles), clearly highlighting the techniques and training methods Bruce Lee incorporated, developed - and often discarded - along the way. After guiding the reader through the various phases of JKD, the author then outlines the core techniques, which, I feel, is as good a place to start as any, if you want to know what JKD fighting is really like. But Tommy Gong also discusses the philosophical side of Bruce and how he tried to incorporate his personal beliefs into his system of Martial Arts. Martial Arts is as much a way of looking at life, dealing with the world and facing our own fears and limitations, as it is about fighting and Bruce Lee was constantly aware of this, as Tommy Gong shows us. There are six Appendices, One of which is an interesting discussion of Biomechanics, applied to JKD, written by 3 experts in the field. Another appendix is an overview of Bruce's personal library. One of Bruce's most ardent beliefs is that we never stop learning, growing and changing and that adhering rigidly to any style or system inhibits our growth as Martial Artists and as Human Beings. I hope this volume will go a long way toward clearing up many of the misconceptions surrounding Jeet Kune Do, since the author provides many quotes and excerpts from Bruce himself as well as his widow, Linda and JKD instructors like Ted Wong, who apparently logged more training hours with Bruce than anyone else. There are lots of great photos and illustrations (many I'd never seen before), taken from various sources, including private collections, and they complement the text wonderfully, sometimes demonstrating techniques, sometimes illustrating concepts. I also like the brief "biographies" of Bruce's friend and students, such as Ted Wong and Allan Joe. They help to capture the feel of the time and places Bruce was teaching and developing his art.For me, Tommy Gong's book clarified so many points and answered so many questions about the techniques (both evolution and execution)of JKD. I've always known that Bruce's art developed through the years, but this book pins it down and shows which of the main techniques developed during which period and how they differed from previous "versions". If you are a long-time fan of Bruce Lee and JKD, this is well worth adding to your library. If you are looking for a place to begin learning about Bruce Lee or his art, I recommend starting with this book, to get an overview of the history and development of JKD. This is one book I will be reading and re-reading.

When I first saw this book on Amazon I was skeptical. There are so many books on Jeet Kune Do and Bruce Lee, some good , and some bad. Then I saw that it was by Tommy Gong. I have had the opportunity to meet and talk with Tommy Gong a couple of times at JKD seminars and events, and I know that he is very knowledgeable. I just got my copy of the book today, and I must say that this is an outstanding book. It has to be the most in depth analysis of the evolution of Bruce Lee and his martial art ever written. I especially like Chapter 6, Comparison of Core Techniques. Thank You, Tommy Gong, for writing this book. It fills a void that most JKD books never even touch.

I just finished reading Bruce Lee, the Evolution of a Martial Artist, by Tommy Gong. This is such a good book for any martial artist interested in Lee and his systems of fighting. He was Chinese and American from the get-go, born in San Francisco. In fact, his Chinese name, Jun Fan (pronounced fawn) means protector of San Francisco. However his youth was spent in Hong Kong, where he became a child movie star, and studied Wing Chun, a southern style of Kung Fu, with Yip Man. The book shows how Lee incorporated elements of Kung Fu and Western forms of fighting, i.e., fencing, boxing, and so on, on his path toward mastery of the martial arts, at a time when everyone else viewed different Asian and Western systems as walled-off from each other. It also shows that there was much more to Bruce Lee than just acting or fighting. He studied Asian and Western philosophy, reading constantly, and analyzing films of great fighters like Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, and so on. His influence was widespread, partly because of the different people he trained at times, for example, Joe Lewis, the great Karate champion. I knew Bruce in Oakland, and this book really captures his great drive for excellence and self-improvement.

This book is the best ever written on Bruce Lee's Martial Art. Purely factual and put together In an orderly fashion. This volume has many unpublished photos and documents from the Bruce Lee archives . There is so much garbage out there on Bruce Lee ... This book sets the standard of what could be and should be regarding Lee's incredible Legacy.

Finally, the whole story in chronological order with the changes in fighting philosophy that led to Jeet Kune Do. Very impressed and a must for any Bruce Lee fan.

A well written book about the true martial arts master, Bruce Lee. There are also great pictures to add to the quality of this book.

There were only three individuals who were ever certified and authorized by Bruce Lee to teach the art of Jeet Kune Do. The highest-ranked Instructor is Taky Kimura. The only other instructors certified by Bruce Lee were the late James Lee and Dan Inosanto. Ted Wong was a senior student at the time.It is therefore disappointing that Guro Inosanto is given only the briefest mentions in the book, he is not interviewed nor profiled in anyway. This unfortunate and is due to politics and personal issues that are not honorable to discuss here in a review. However, the book is well laid out and researched, with examples of personal notes by Sijo Lee and worthy of reading if you understand that a notable perspective and side of Bruce Lee’s JKD history is missing by excluding Guro Inosanto who is alive and continues to teach to this day.

Best book on Bruce Lee, to this date, filled with a lot of interesting detail, e.g., Bruce Lee practiced chi-sao until his death...I thought he gave up on chi-sao, but his students recall him studying chi-sao and trying to perfect this technique.

Let's get right down to business. I'm going to need to send CJ a bill for all the therapy she is going to put me through with this series, I can already feel it. Holy toledo. That's right. Toledo. It's been two days since I finished the book and I'm still reeling from the book hangover. It's true when they say you can find beauty in the darkness. The transformation of Sunshine is so beautiful. What happened those last few days before she disappeared tore her heart to shreds, and even after five years it's taken a toll on her. She didn't just survive those five years on the run, she fought her way through them. She is still fighting. She's harder. Stronger. More pessimistic. Honest. And for all intents and purposes she is broken. The Bullets didn't know who they'd find when they finally found Sunshine, but there was no way they could have expected the woman they found. She was once their light and warmth, now she's cold and dark. Summer is gone. Only Sunshine remains. In some ways time has done the Bullets well, in others they are still broken from the girl that stole their hearts when she left them. What was once a strong family unit, has fractured in the absence of their Sunshine. Their relationships may have changed with one another and their hearts may be bruised from her absence, but they still crave their Sunshine. Gavriel wants to control her. Blaise wants to see her. Callum wants to save her. Ryker wants to punish her. The secrets she holds will break them more than when she left them, but it will make them stronger."You know what makes a person strong, Sunshine? It's not their ability to hurt someone," he began with a frown, "it's their ability to take a hit."CJ has created this beautifully fractured dark romance, and I'll take every hit she throws my way when it comes to Sunshine and her Bullets. Her writing is gritty, yet graceful. Dark, yet full of so much light. Broken, but I feel it will mend together perfectly in the end. You cannot come into this story expecting rainbows and butterflies. You need to expect pain. You need to expect darkness. You need to expect heartache. But I promise you this, everything CJ puts your heart through will worth the heartache in the end. She'll show you you can take a hit.

Once Summer was a Golden Girl; sweet, innocent, a good student, the perfect daughter of the police chief's perfect family. She played the part of a good girl beautifully with one exception or three. She had a secret friendship with the Bullets, the local gang. They were the town's bad boys; underground fighters, drug dealers, womanizers but Summer knew a different side to them. With her, they were gentle, protective. She was their Sunshine. Until it all fell apart and she disappeared. Summer was no more. She ran, changed her look, her name. She lived on the streets, did what she had to do. She survived. The Bullets and one of her dad's officers came together from the day she disappeared. Never believing that she was dead, they didn't give up until they found her. Now they have her back. It's the same but so very different. She's a different girl than the innocent girl they once knew. The guys are all grown up now and much more dangerous. A crime boss, a pro fighter, a bounty hunter, and a federal agent all bonded over the girl they once knew, the girl they all loved. Still love. However, Sunshine ran for a reason. Now that her past has caught up to her, it may kill her.Sunshine and Bullets is extraordinary. For me, it was also a difficult read. It's well-written, the characters are indescribable, the storyline is fantastic. It's gritty, ugly, mean, and left me raw. I can deal with anything and everything Sunshine did to survive. I would never question or judge a person for their actions to remain in existence. It's the men who cause me pain, even as teens. The teasing, taunting, controlling, all while sleeping around. The pedestal she was placed upon was cold and lonely and to watch them easily give affections to so many others was callous at best. The adult men are brutal, cruel. Gavriel wants to control her. Blaise wants to see her. Callum wants to save her. Ryker wants to punish her. They are broken, complex and angry but it went too far in both Gav and Ryker's cases. They each caused me to have a negative physical reaction during their scenes. Sunshine may have left them, hurt them, angered them but she had reason and they had never been open enough or honest enough for her to understand how they truly felt about her. They each did what they wanted in life and then punished her for doing what she felt like she had to for herself and for them. Adult Blaise hopefully has outgrown his manwhore ways if he wants Sunshine and Callum has always been sweet and sexy. I also need to note her best friend, Nix. I look forward to so much more of this guy! Brilliant, commanding, twisted, loyal. Love him and can't wait to see him with the Bullets. This story is a compelling, beautifully damaged, dark romance full of monsters. It's told in the present day and in flashbacks. It's abrasive yet there are enough moments of light that it keeps the reader from becoming overwhelmed. I was definitely out of my comfort zone but in the best way. I do believe in the love story despite the ugliness. Sunshine and the Bullets will never be perfect but if they stay together, they may do more than survive. They may get their twisted version of HEA. Despite my fears, I am anxiously eager for the next book.

I'm a bit new to this genre, and the only author I have read is Coralee June. This book and her Walker series has made me a big fan of her writing. I came across this amazing author on Amazon in search of a new series and I'm so happy I clicked on Wings of A walker or I wouldn't have gotten a chance to read such great books. Sunshine and Bullets, I read it until 2am. I was hooked and Wanted to read while my 3 year old was a sleep. Wanted no interruptions. I loved everything about this book. When it came to her running away and leaving the guys behind..all I kept thinking was, what happened?? Then you start seeing her 17 year old life and in the back of your mind you have a small feeling maybe it's because of this person or maybe this person. Gav was the only person I'm on the fence about. I liked him more as a teenager, but I know he became this way because sunshine left. So maybe he'll loosen up now that she's back. I loved how raw this book was. This is the type of book you can't put down because you have to know what happens next or you'll be thinking about it all day. I can't wait for the next book. I'm patiently, not really waiting for book 2. Lol

Summer annoyed the heck out of me. You can't write that she strong and then show her being weak sauce. The male characters didn't have that problem from high school to five years later they have all kept their personality traits. But being on the run for five years... in these streets, Summer should have had a hardness to her and she doesn't.
