Review

Praise for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest“A work of genuine literary merit...What Mr. Kesey has done in his unusual novel is to transform the plight of a ward of inmates in a mental hospital into a glittering parable of good and evil.”—The New York Times Book Review“[A] brilliant first novel...a strong, warm story about the nature of human good and evil...Keysey has made his book a roar of protest against middlebrow society's Rules and the invisible Rulers who enforce them.”—Time“The final triumph of these men at the cost of a terrifying sacrifice should send chills down any reader's back....This novel's scenes have the liveliness of a motion picture.”—The Washington Post“An outstanding book...[Kesey's] characters are original and real....This is a tirade against the increasing controls over man and his mind, yet the author never gets on a soap box. Nor does he forget that there is a thin line between tragedy and comedy.”—Houston Chronicle

This is an unflinching look at mental illness, psychiatric hospitals and friendship. The book explores the questions of sanity - what is it; what defines it? It also explores hopefulness, loyalty and heroism within the construct of a rigidly structured hospital ward reigned by a sadistic, insane (or compassionate, sane?) nurse and her similarly formed minions. With vivid symbolism, this book is considered an allegory for Christ's sacrifice to save humanity. The question is was the ward truly saved? How one answers this question, I believe, turns on one's view of Flowers for Algernon - is it better to never have experienced freedom/sanity/happiness/intelligence or better to have experienced it briefly then lose it in a consciously helpless way?

If you are intrigued by stories about the human condition, then you'll do no better than One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This is an incredible story of how indomitable and influential the human spirit can be, even in the face of a manipulative and controlling system that cares little for anyone or anything beyond winning. An absolute must read!

Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Although the story takes place mainly in a mental hospital, its ramifications can be felt in all of the broader society. The struggles depicted in the various characters, both internally and inter-personally, will give the reader pause and perhaps change your perception on life. The story at its core encompasses the struggle between the individual (portrayed by Randall McMurphy) and the establishment (Portrayed by nurse Ratched.) It is told through the eyes of the schizophrenic half-Indian known as Chief Bromden. Bromden has pretended to be deaf and dumb for so long that everyone takes this fact for granted. It also allows him to overhear comments from the staff that others would not. The Chief is an interesting choice as narrator, and at times it seemed like he was rambling on about nothing. Unreliable narrators can be a touchy thing, but Kesey is able to navigate his way through the Chief's mind, and in time we find his ramblings have a purpose. He views the establishment as a machine, which he refers to as "the combine." He speaks of fog machines, wires in the walls, and robotic people, and views them as part of the combine. Even the name of the nurse, Ratched, sounds almost like "ratchet," which is a common tool. The Chief sees the struggle between the Big Nurse, as he calls Ratched, and McMurphy, and even though he has a sense right away that McMurphy is different, Bromden doesn't hold out much hope. After all, the combine is a massive machine and the Chief knows what it did to him. Bromden tells McMurphy he "used to be big," but not any more. The Chief's mother, a white woman from town, along with the government, broke down both he and his father and became bigger than both of them put together. The antagonist is Ratched, an ex-army nurse who rules the ward with an iron fist. She preys on the weaknesses of the patients and attacks them in those areas. She is all about control and power, and over her long career has devised many ways of projecting this with a cold, machine-like efficiency. Ratched has hand picked her staff based on their cruelty and submissiveness. The Chief calls her "The Big Nurse," which reminds me of Orwell's Big Brother, and mentions early on that "The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine" (pg 24). Indeed the Chief sees her as a machine, part of the combine who's purpose is to make others small. Ratched represents the oppressive nature and de-humanization present in modern society. And then there is Randle McMurphy. Sent to the ward from a work farm (because it's "easier" time), McMurphy comes in loud and confident. His singing and laughter are something new for the patients so used to suppressing their emotions. And he is definitely not the kind of patient the mechanical and repressive Nurse Ratched wants. It only takes McMurphy one group session to see Ratched's method of exposing the patient's weakest areas and pecking them into submission. Harding, the subject of the group meetings earlier frenzy, explains that it was all therapeutic. McMurphy, however, gives Harding his perception: "what she is is a ball-cutter. I've seen a thousand of 'em...people who try to make you weak so they can get you to...live like they want you to. And the best way to do this...is to weaken you by gettin' you where it hurts the worst" (pg 56). So McMurphy, ever the gambling man, makes a bet with his fellow patients that he would be able to make Ratched lose her composure, and he accomplished this by using her own tactics against her. As he pulls Bromden and the others out of the "fog" and makes them big again, McMurphy unwittingly becomes the savior of his fellow patients. It did not go un-noticed that the electroshock table was cross-shaped with the patient restrained by the wrists and feet and a "crown" placed over his head. When McMurphy rips Nurse Ratched's tightly starched uniform and exposes her breasts, he is symbolically exposing her hypocrisy and breaking the power she had once wielded over the patients. Chief Bromden's final act of mercy cemented Nurse Ratched's fall as well as giving McMurphy the dignity that he had earned.Perhaps the largest piece of advice I pulled from this novel is to never let anyone or anything take your individuality. Society in general would like to have everyone fit into the same mold because then the people are easier to predict and control. However, we all need a McMurphy in our lives to show us that we can still be individuals and fit into society. And when The Combine tries to weaken you and make you conform, just throw your head back and laugh like McMurphy, "because he knows you have laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep yourself in balance, just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy" (pg 233).

This is an amazing book. I didn’t read this until I hit thirty; the reason for this being I thought less of it due to having seen the film. The film is not bad, but for me One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest was its film version, full stop. I eventually decided to read the book after learning about the interesting life its author Ken Kesey lived, including that he wrote much of this book while working at a mental hospital. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest deals with the relationship between freedom and power, and about how mental illness develops when the power of others dominates an individual to such a great extent that he/she can no longer act free. The individuals in the hospital are shown by Kesey to be lacking in courage and self-belief, and demonstrate an unwillingness to act without permission and approval. While the hospital should be making patients better it actually makes them worse by actively discouraging attempts to be assertive and by labelling any attempt to act free from the constraints of institutional power as symptomatic of a worsening of the underlying disorder. The book is told through the eyes of Chief Bowden: a part Indian man that has spent a long time in the hospital pretending to be deaf and mute. Through the subjective experiences of the Chief, Kesey presents the actual experiences of mental illness. Kesey in doing this dismisses the notion that mental illness is unreal but reveals how its treatment is sometimes abused to keep people in line. Chief Bowden experiences things through metaphorical hallucinations. For example, when speaking of the power held by the Big Nurse, he literally sees wires running from her office into the bodies of those that she controls. This conception of mental illness is similar to that found in R.D Laing’s book the Divided Self: the mentally ill person is someone that cannot face the pain of reality and retreats into their own realm, but reality still intrudes via metaphorical representations. Throughout the novel Chief Bowden focuses on the power struggle taking place between Randle McMurphy and the Big Nurse. McMurphy is not in hospital voluntarily but has committed an offence which landed him on a work farm. He is transferred to the mental hospital partly of his own design to escape drudgery. McMurphy immediately emerges as a threat to the Big Nurse due to his willingness to question process and act without fear. He is not scared of authority and does not censor himself when confronted with the subtle shaming techniques of the Big Nurse. The Big Nurse effectively runs the hospital. She is shown through the subjective eye of Chief Bowden to be solely concerned with maintaining her grip of power over the hospital. She is obsessed with process; she pretends to enforce process for the therapeutic value that the processes have on the patients, when in reality she loves the process because it is her process and provides her with a sense of security and power. The interactions between McMurphy and Big Nurse question the extent to which people can be free. Sartre once argued that individuals are totally free so that even if facing the death penalty we are free to defy the executioners by mentally not accepting their interpretation of events and the descriptions placed on them. McMurphy is a Sartrean hero as he does not allow the views of others and the subtle attempts to shun and devalue him dictate how he behaves. However, as the book plays out Kesey demonstrates that living in this manner may not lead to a life of pleasure or fame but may involve the free person being crushed by power structures and processes that do not appreciate the questioning of where power lies. I would argue that One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest offers a modern presentation of the story found in the New Testament. Like Christ, McMurphy questions the powers of his time: in this case psychiatry and bureaucratic process rather than the Jewish religious leaders. Like Christ he questioned the intentions of the powers that be and acted as a free human rather than someone embarrassed by their true nature. Moreover, like Christ, McMurphy suffers at the hands of an authority that pretends to be in place for the concern of the many when in reality it gives power to the few, and in suffering on the Cross gives the weak a lasting sense of freedom.See my other reviews at amateurreviewspace.blogspot.com

This "manual" is a lie. I bought it hoping to figure out some problems with some fluidic converters the previous owner installed and was non-plussed.Replacement procedures were not the same as removal. Once I replaced my ventral shield generator I stated noticing flucuations in Medvedov radiation readings. All suggested fixes were not supported by CEC.

Not as funny as I thought it would be. Has a lot of filler content outlining the history of the people who flew it. Han, Chewie, and Lando Calrissian all get full-page photos with text about their adventures & backstory. Bought it for my husband who's restoring our Van and spending a lot of time reading actual repair manuals. It could have been WAY more funny if this had kept up the fiction of being an actual tear-down-and-rebuilt repair manual for a YT-1300 freighter, with all kinds of details about how to repair a hyperdrive motivator, for example, he would have LOVED it. Of course, that would have been a LOT more work to put together, and probably appealed to a much narrower audience, so I can understand why they took the easy way out. Worth a laugh just for the cover. The book itself is a slog.

We have seen lots of technical information on the Millennium Falcon over the years. Starting with the Starlog Technical Manuals to entries in the Essential Guides and Vehicle Cross Section books to even a 3D layered book. All of these were great entries and held lots of cool information. However Haynes has made the best of the best among all of them.Just about everything that mentioned in the other books is all here along with lots more. It reads like a product catalog for this Corellan light freighter along with the other models. So not only do you get detailed specs on our beloved cruiser you also get some details on several Falcon-like variations like cockpit placement, engine types, cargo capacities and other unexpected "options". But the meat of the book is all Falcon. This is not a repair manual in the sense that people are used when seeing Hayne's on the cover. None of Hayne's sci-fi books are. It is a detailed set of specifications though, and really that should be enough.Every system, function, feature, and modification is specified on this manual. You get to read about the standard parts as well as the ones tricked out by Solo and previous owners. You get specifics on navigation and maneuvering, weapons systems, guidance and sensor systems, defensive shielding, cargo capacity, support systems, available factory options (you can get a mini-fighter launched from one of the access hatches) and more. There is enough here for you to even imagine what you own Corellan freighter would be like.As I stated earlier this book pretty much trumps every other technical entry previously published. You think you have some awesome stuff already? You probably do, but with this book has more. Guaranteed. If you absolutely love the Millennium Falcon and would absolutely love all the info you can gather this book is it. Unlike other Star Wars books that seem to be constantly updated with new stuff (thus making new editions to buy) I would be hard pressed to conceive how much more can be done than this book... unless somebody makes a real repair manual.

Outstanding reference book for Star Wars fans. Very imaginative creation of a historical narative for the SW universe, and this ship design.Gives a rehash of the essential characters, and how they relate with the ship.Don't think in terms of a "Haynes Repair/Service Manual", that is just silly. It's a basic fan reference book. A must have for true SW fans.

Let me preface this by saying, I have no clue what a Haynes Manual is. I assume it's a repair manual. However, I will not be reviewing this "Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual" as a repair manual but as a reference book. Of that, it does a good job.The manual details the history and variations of the YT designs, especially the most famous of all YT's, the Millennium Falcon. We get to see photos of all sides of the Falcon, floor plans, some of Han's modifications. It also includes a buying guide, with photos and illustrations of the facilities, the navigation and defense systems, the cockpit, together with scenes out of the movies. The history of the Falcon itself includes short biographies of Lando Calrissian, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. What would have made this book perfect is to see a history of the ship beyond "Return of the Jedi," but the author says this was done so fans can enjoy the book without spoilers. Overall, it's a good reference book for Star Wars fans young and old.

Fun reading, incredible amount of fictious info regarding history of Correlian engineering and the fiction of all the YT-1300 systems. The detail that's gone into, side notes of other individuals you never knew existed in the Star Wars universe, is over the top, the writers went above and beyond. It reads like it's factualA must for any Star Wars fan and a absolute requirement for millennium falcon lovers

I have several Haynes Manuals for my other vehicles (04 Corvette, 83 280ZX, 90 Toyota 4x4, 03 Ford F250 6.0l diesel and 06 Honda Civic) and this one is filled with everything required to keep your Falcon in tip-top running order. I am very impressed with the format and detailed content. I've already added the other Haynes Manuals for several other cool "out of this world" vehicles to my wish list!

This is a Haynes Workshop Manual for the (fictitious) Millennium Falcon. It's a bit outlandish to be obliged to fill out boilerplate ratings about the plot, mood, pace and characters of a tongue-in-cheek repair manual. Sometimes, one size doesn't fit all. I wonder if the same rating format is now applied by Amazon for other real reference material, e.g., woodworking, gardening, dictionaries, numismatics. . . .

Okay, so I tend to be pretty picky about these kinds of books (nonfiction, business, how-to); there's just so much "noise" in this space that it can be difficult to find high quality material, but this book is officially my go-to reference for when people ask me questions about social entrepreneurship. The author outlines the various aspects of organizing a social enterprise (what it is, legal/incorporation issues, fundraising, measuring impact, intrapreneurship) as well as the more personal-oriented aspects of social entrepreneurship (taking the entrepreneurship leap, building a career in this space, consumer habits, etc.). It covers all the major areas and gives plenty of real-world examples. It's also written from the perspective of three rising entrepreneurs, so it's a bit more interesting than just reading your usual dry, how-to manual––and it's well-organized, so if there are only a few topics that the reader is interested in, it's easy to skim through the table of contents and find the location in the book of those topics only. Lastly, the author also makes it relevant to all sorts of people (business owners/founders, students, professors, people interesting in creating social enterprises within existing organizations) and all sorts of business (nonprofit, for profit, small, large, etc.), which makes it relatable/accessible regardless of whether you're a die-hard social entrepreneur, just getting your feet wet in this work, or merely exploring.

As the reader quickly finds out, social entrepreneurship is a vast topic. I really can appreciate how the author is able to keep it from being “drinking from a firehose” and presenting the material in a self-contained manageable volume. What makes this possible is a great format in following three very interesting characters looking to start a social enterprise. The book, which starts out as a story, extends beyond that by dropping in tons of knowledge with qualified sources, and ends up a very credible reference. You can tell a lot of research went into it especially in the areas of legal structure, fundraising, and the global scene for social impact. I think this is a great introduction and provides the framework for anyone wanting to enter the space.Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a curious reader who hopes one day to enter the social impact scene. Additionally, as a relatively newer topic in entrepreneurship, there doesn't seem to be much material available to help guide, making this book all the more necessary and valued. This would be a great addition to Business school curriculum.

I wish I would've read this book before starting my own journey as a social entrepreneur. It's been awhile since I read a book from cover to cover in one evening, but this book made me think, dream, and it delivers insight know how into the world of social entrepreneurism.Read this book.

This was a great read! Initially I was a bit intimidated by the social entrepreneurship space but this book made it easy to digest. Anyone interested in this topic has something to gain from reading this!

Awesome book.

As an aspiring social impact entrepreneur, this book was an great read and thorough resource. It gave me a deep understanding of the topic, including tips from starting up a business to policies that affect the sector. Its structure—51 questions discussed one at a time as a conversation by three characters—was particularly helpful. The conversation was clear and immediately understandable, while the ordering of the questions makes for a great reference manual for future use. Finally, I found the content to be actionable; the book covers many how-to questions and provides reference to additional resources, so I feel that I can use what I've learned to get to work!

I am planning to teach a new course on Impact Creation, Analysis and Evaluation for our MBA students at UCLA Anderson School. This book by Parekh would be an excellent background reader for my class. It is an easy read, provides a lot of useful information on what is meant by social entrepreneurship and describes various organizational forms that can be used for social ventures. It is organized as answers to 51 questions but is presented as queries faced by three fictional social entrepreneurs who must understand the nuances to make relevant decisions.

This is a FANTASTIC guide to the world of social entrepreneurship. When I first read the example Parekh structures the book around (getting healthy, affordable food to low-income people living in "food deserts"), I thought: 'In the absence of a billionaire investor bankrolling the project, how would you even go about doing that?!' Now I know! She provides a step-by-step narrative--complete with trial and error--showing one real-world way that it could be done. That's my favorite thing about this book: It offers practical, down-to-earth advice you can really use. If you're thinking about social entrepreneurship, do yourself a favor and read this book and keep it as a reference. It's jam-packed with everything you need to know--and it's incredibly inspiring, as well!
