This is a "must read" for those who want a good, easy to read summary of the Theology of the Body presented by Pope John Paul II. Healy goes into enough detail that one can easily understand the premises behind JPII's theology. JPII's Theology of the Body, as a book, is a compilation of a series of his talks on this subject of human sexuality and true spousal union as mutual self-gifting. If you purchase the other book, you will find many repeats because each "talk" begins with a recap of the lecture before. Healy breaks this all down to the basics of JPII's lecture series and is an excellent companion to the large volume that includes the exact words of the Holy Father. Healy writes in simple language for even younger people to comprehend. This book emphasizes the value and sanctity of marriage and the gift of sexuality, as originally given to us by God outlined in Genesis. JPII continually refers to Genesis and "in the beginning," before the fall of humankind, and this is what we were created for---true spousal union, when man and woman truly become one with each other, and with the grace of God through the interaction with the Holy Spirit, a true sacramental marriage is possible. She mentions JPII's comments on objectification of the human body and how it has depleted our dignity as human beings. Overall, I recommend this book to those who are not theologians but to people who want to know more about the divine design of the human race and how sexuality is sacred when respected and treasured as a gift from God.

For a long time I wanted to read Theology of the Body. This should be the first book you get for learning and love what is in TOB. Wonderful, easy to read, easy to understand, takes into account all “ those hard issues” and explains them under the light of God’s love for humanity.

As a young, recently married Catholic, I have been introduced to Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body, but some of the literature can be quite intimidating. This is essentially an introduction to the Theology of the Body written as a study. I suppose it could be used for groups, but I have found it to be a great book for individual study, complete with Scripture passages, quesitons for reflection and spiritual exercises. You'll want to have a Bible handy while reading as well. I highly recommend this book for Catholics young and old, married or single. Actually, I recommend it to anyone, Catholic, Christian or not who is seeking the truth about human dignity. I have since given this book as a gift to my younger brother who recently married and to my parents who just celebrated their 40th anniversary. I want more people to know about Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body because it has changed my life and my marriage.

This book eloquently and coherently conveys the theology of the body from John Paul II's teachings in the context of Biblical and Roman Catholic teachings. Mary Healy demonstrates an intimate knowledge of the topic, as she skillfully presents some complex ideas. This teaching is rooted in Scripture and follows the course of the Pope's teachings.I approached this book thinking of it as a book on marriage. I discovered that it is much more than a book on marriage. It is a book for all people to learn God's truths about who we are as humans in physical bodies; our bodies are called the "sacrament of the person." This is certainly helpful for a better Biblical understanding of marriage, but it also helps us better understand being single or celibate. The chapters address the redemptive-salvation history of God's relationship with people-- our creation, fall, redemption, future glorification. Our bodies and relationships are addressed in this context of the revelation of God's love and grace. We are called to follow God in expressing self-giving love through our bodies as Christ did in his sacrifice. This book teaches how this might look in our lives. The reality of Christ's coming has changed our realities and responsibilites forever. We have been set free and charged to love as God loves. For the married person, the teaching shows that we are to love our spouses as Christ loves the church; in fact, Healy writes "The cross of marriage is its glory." And for the celibate person or single person, the teaching shows that God's love is sufficient and that we can commmit ourselves to him fully.I think the topics of the book are all substantiated by Scripture with the exception of the Roman Catholic teaching on contraception. To me, this is something that is permissable rather than something contrary to Scripture. I think at the very least the use of contraception is what the wider church would call adiaphora --something nonessential to salvation and not morally mandated for Christian ethics. We are called to live by faith and not put stumbling blocks before other Christians. Although I disagree with the teaching on this topic, I appreciated the writing and carefully thought out explanations.I recommend this book to all Christians, especially Roman Catholics who desire to learn the Pope's teachings better; however, in no way is the book's helpfulness limited to Roman Catholics.

Readable. Understandable. Maybe superficial but now I’m prepared to read the original , well, in English, and see what I’ve been missing.

Great book. Has lots of practical applications for individual or group study

Mary Healy is a wonderful writer. She speaks of St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body is a beautiful narrative style and makes something that is very dense, very comprehensible.

Great overview of St. John Paul II Theology of the Body. Healy is very practical and very easy to understand.

Strong as Sandow: How Eugen Sandow Became the Strongest Man on Earth

Review

The life of Eugen Sandow (1867–1925), a Victorian-era bodybuilding superstar dubbed “the Modern Hercules,” is rife with mystery. Not only did his family destroy his belongings after his death, but articles and books on Sandow are often contradictory. Tate (a former bodybuilder himself ) reconciles these challenges by telling the story as “Sandow would have wanted it told”—with drama and flair. This decision could have easily resulted in an over-the-top portrayal of the subject; instead, Tate’s chronological narrative portrays an ambitious, hardworking showman with a drive for excellence—from “feeble” boy to acrobat, strongman, fitness guru, and creator of the first organized bodybuilding contest. And although admiring of Sandow’s impressive physique and strength, Tate is skeptical of the man’s purported antics (such as defeating a lion). Tate argues that Sandow was more than just a strongman; that his attention to both mind and body inspired the people of his time—and can inspire people today—to devote “more attention to their own health.” The digital illustrations—rendered in a gentle, textured black outline housing a warm color palette—show an approachable version of the athlete. Additionally, decorative caption boxes and some stylized lettering (seen on marquees and banners) help develop a period feel. Back matter includes an afterword, exercise techniques, a bibliography, an author’s note, and quotation sources. A powerful pairing with Meghan McCarthy’s Strong Man and Nicolas Debon’s The Strongest Man in the World. —Horn Book STARRED REVIEWSparked by his own passion for bodybuilding and physical fitness, Tate recounts the story of Eugen Sandow (1867–1925) in this inspirational picture book. The biography begins during Sandow’s childhood in Prussia, where he used sports and exercise to develop from a frail, skinny child into a robust, physically active young man and later into a world-famous strongman in the United States, with his own successful business enterprise. The text progresses chronologically, with references to various geographic settings and specific historical events. Tate’s mixed-media illustrations feature characters, especially Sandow, with oversize, highly expressive faces. The muted colors are appropriate to the historical setting. The artwork is chock-full of humorous, cartoonish details that greatly enhance the story. In the afterword, Tate provides additional biographical information on both Sandow and himself. He includes a few simple exercises for kids and a well-developed bibliography. This title would be a good companion to Meghan McCarthy’s Strong Man: The Story of Charles Atlas, reinforcing the themes of physical fitness and the importance of healthy choices. VERDICT An excellent introduction to a historical figure that will appeal not only to children already interested in sports and fitness but also to those in need of encouragement.—School Library Journal STARRED REVIEWTate introduces his readers to one of the first international sports stars in a well-researched biography of bodybuilding strongman Eugen Sandow. Friedrich Wilhelm Müller began life in Prussia as a weak and sickly child who longed for activity. A boyhood trip to Italy changed Friedrich's life, when he learned about the gladiators of Rome and their belief in daily strenuous exercise. Tate explores Müller's life as a student, circus performer, and model as he grows (pun absolutely intended) into the professional strongman Eugen Sandow. Digitally created illustrations use dramatic grainy shadows that suggest the inky carbon smudges of old newspaper photos. As in many old newspapers, all the characters depicted in the story are white. Tate wisely introduces some diversity in the backmatter by showing a multiracial group of boys and girls as models for four simple exercises. The other strongmen that appear in the book present a range of physiques, a nicely designed if subtle hat tip to the idea that fitness can be reflected in different weights and sizes. Additional backmatter includes an afterword on Sandow's life, Tate's relationship with the sport of bodybuilding, and a bibliography that includes Web links when possible. The only thing that's missing is a timeline, a feature that is always appreciated. Readers will find parallels with Meghan McCarthy's picture-book biography of Charles Atlas, Strong Man (2007), but Tate's celebration of Eugen Sandow makes a solid addition to any biography section.—Kirkus Reviews"Strongest Man on Earth"? With competing reports, self-promoting hype, and Louis Cyr (of Debon's The Strongest Man in the World, BCCB 5/07) on the strongman show circuit, it's hard to award that title to Eugen Sandow with certainty. He is, however, considered the father of body-building, and he turned himself from a scrawny kid into a bundle of muscle. After an exhausting career as strongman, Sandow, no longer as bulky and buff as he was in his heyday, "launched the Great Competition," a men's body-building contest that assessed not only an impressive physique but also overall health and athleticism. While Louis Cyr and other muscle-flexing contemporaries have passed into the history and record books, Sandow lives on as the gold-plated statuette awarded annually to Mr. Olympia. The grunting, hefting, and posing are presented here with a liberal helping of humor, and if viewers aren't rolling on the floor over the early twentieth century body-builder's costumes, they will be over Sandow's own stint as a life model in an art studio. As engaging as Sandow's story is, endnotes command equal attention, particularly the historical follow-up in the afterword and tate's own body-building interests and experience (complete with photograph) in the author's note. Source notes, a bibliography, and suggestions for some simple strengthening exercises are also included. —BCCBAt the turn of the twentieth century, Englishman Eugen Sandow was known as the strongest man alive, a trailblazer in bodybuilding and fitness, and a personal trainer to King George V. Though his life story may not be the stuff of history textbooks, his experiences are a window to popular culture in the Victorian era and the emerging idea of celebrity. He was one of the first to inspire people to pay attention to their health and to be physically active long before it became a mainstream practice. He became a world-wide phenomenon by performing feats of strength in circuslike shows and hosting bodybuilding competitions for spectators. Both Tate's narrative and colorful illustrations reveal his own personal experience in the bodybuilding arena and his respect for Sandow's lifelong goal. Throughout his life, he perfected his physique and the larger-than-life persona that accompanied it, but Tate's measured biography doesn't shy away from the imperfect aspects of Sandow's personality. —Booklist Friedrich Wilhelm Müller loved athletics as a boy but "playing sports required a strong, healthy body" and Friedrich was skinny and frail. Though he was often "too sick to play," he remained undaunted by his physical restrictions and played sports, determined to be a healthy and strong person. As Friedrich grew older, his love of athletics never dimmed. Though his father wanted him to attend university and focus on a career, Friedrich could not ignore his drive to be active--he decided to join the circus. When circus life didn't work out for Friedrich, his journey toward being "the strongest man in the world" began in earnest.  He trained as a bodybuilder, changed his name to Eugen Sandow and soon became a professional strongman. With time, work and some (possibly slippery) performance tricks, Eugen gained world fame and launched the first organized bodybuilding contest, ever-so-humbly awarding the winner a statue of himself. Eugen Sandow's exercise and diet regimens are used to this day and the prize for the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition is still the (slightly updated) Sandow.Don Tate (Whoosh! Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions), who used to be a bodybuilder himself, treats the exceptional life of Eugen Sandow with appreciation and respect while making sure to note in the ample back matter that much of what people today know about Sandow came from the man himself--a man who constantly sought perfection and sometimes stretched the truth. Tate's biography of one of the first international sports stars is welcoming to the young reader with approachable text and rich digital illustrations. And, for the budding athlete, there is even a page that teaches different strength building exercises. —Shelf Awareness

My class loved this story. We used the exercises in the book for indoor PE!

Very well written

Loved learning about Eugen Sandow in STRONG AS SANDOW. Tate tells Sandow's story in a way that is not only factual, but inspirational. I also think the way Tate has illustrated this is fantastic. My personal favorite picture is the one with Sandow lifting the piano full of people on page 3!!

My children can be particular about the books they are willing to read. One of my kids is a huge Cars fan, and selected Race Team as an early reader. The book has held their interest enough to keep them reading until all of the words were mastered.Race Team is a “Ready to Read” book and targeted to pre-K to Kindergarten readers. This book features “big type and easy words, rhyme and rhythm, [and] picture clues.” It also tells a familiar story with the themes you'd expect from Cars: friendship and teamwork.Lightning McQueen is heading to a race and all of his car friends will help him prepare and travel to the race with him. This particular book does not contain rhyming words, but the pictures do provide clues. There are a few challenging words in Race Team, like “excited” and “reporters,” that will leave your child with a great sense of accomplishment when she can read them. “Ka-chow!”The text in the book is large and easy to read. There are 8-10 words per page in this 32 page book.Race Team was illustrated by the Disney Storybook Artists and stays true to the characters and scenes in cars. Many of the illustrations will have a familiar feel to fans of the first Cars movie: Lightning surrounded by reporters, Doc wearing his headset, McQueen with his tongue sticking out. When you're learning to read, it's nice to have books you enjoy. Luckily my kids have a wide variety of interests, so I get to listen to Cars books in addition to Princess and Barbie books! This is a fine “learn to read” book for the Cars fan in your home.

That I know of, there are no Cars books available where Mack is on the cover and on many pages of the book. As Mack is my grandson's favorite Cars character, this makes this book his absolute favorite, because of the pictures. Not much plot. Not many words. Vibrant pictures. Truthfully, if it weren't my grandson's favorite book, I'd give it about 2 stars. I just don't feel like we should give a free pass to early readers. Early readers can and should be easy to read yet still interesting.

My 2 year old loves Cars! He’s picking up on some of the words while reading.

Son loved it

Pricey for not much story.

See headline. This book was not worth buying. You’d be better off with anything else besides this book. It took a lot of effort to write this many words about the book. In fact, I think there are more words in this post than are in the book.

my son loves it

Great!!!!!

The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit: And Its Impact on World History, by E. Michael Jones

Review

"One of the most important books one can read on the topic is the massive work The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit and Its Impact on World History, by E. Michael Jones. Mr. Jones provides documentation for his major historical theses, often from recognized Jewish historians. ... the basic point is clearly demonstrated: 'Judaism' under the rabbinic schools and the Talmud since 70 A.D. is significantly different from the revealed religion of the patriarchs and Moses, and the community of Jews who disbelieve Jesus of Nazareth will always produce a certain number of individuals whose ideas and actions objectively undermine, in characteristic ways, the influence of Christian faith in society. If a reader keeps this in mind, and Jones says as much in his own way, then his understanding of the Gospel and of history will be enriched without having to a priori suspect all Jews of nefarious designs against the Church." Rorate Caeli"What is the thesis that has gotten Jones in all this hot water? He says that throughout the past two thousand years, whenever there has been a major movement opposed to the Catholic Church, the Jews have tended to side with those movements, whether religious, social or political. ... Now the question: why should this thesis be considered anti-Semitic? The answer: I have no idea. Are Jones' critics claiming that the Jews have always agreed with the Catholic Church? ... Jones makes a case that the Church has had to defend itself on more than one occasion from revolutionary movements in which the Jews played a part, small or large, and the Jews consequently faced the resentment of Christians afterwards. ... But the really hot stuff is his discussion of the neo-conservatives. Eyebrows will go up. However, here and throughout the book, his research and analysis is comprehensive and calm. The veins never bulge from Jones' neck; if there is Jew hatred here, it is immensely cunning. I would hope that Jones' critics would give him a fair reading rather than continuing to arrange to have his public appearances cancelled. They're not helping their own case - whatever that case is. It's really hopeless when anyone who tries to discuss the Jews is instantly accused of being anti-Semitic if his conclusions point out any Jewish misbehavior." Bradley Rothstein, Gilbert Magazine"Jones is a Roman Catholic, and one of the focuses of his book, perhaps the main one, is the gradual erosion, over a number of centuries, of the Church's power and authority in Europe, a process in which Jews, as the author shows, played very key and very active roles every step of the way (along with the help of willing Christians), and the eventual displacement of that authority by the rising tide of Jewish power. This is an extremely important area of study because for many, many centuries it was the Catholic Church that kept Jewish power in check." Richard Edmondson, deLiberation.

Stunning work, massive scope.Forget Cultural Marxism. Marx is just a little dot in the full image. The book is a rewrite of standard (Whig) history starting at the foot of the cross, up through modern American politics and NeoConservatism, from the Catholic Perspective. This book ties together the work of Josephus, Voltaire, Pat Buchanan (Death of the West) and Paul Gottfried (Multiculturalism) into one neat ideological thread explaining much of European history. The messianic spirit of the modern leftist cultural attacks is traced to its root as the rejection of Christ (Logos). The bizarre civil war of the Jews as described by Josephus (fighting against the Romans) is carried forward and the good cop/bad cop routine of the radical/pseudo-conservative Jewish activists is exposed. The book also explains in detail (from the origins) the WASP/Protestant tendency to support the insane cultural agenda of the Jewish revolutionaries by describing the philo-Judaic theology and origins of these movements. The section on Bolshevism is devastating to the standard canard that associating Jews and Bolshevism is a no-no.This book is a must for every counter revolutionary, although, by the end of the journey you are likely to be a Catholic counter revolutionary.

This is one of the few books I've read that is both entertaining and scholarly. The writing is so clear and economical, and the subject so compelling, that it is hard to put the book down even though it weighs in at 1,200 pages. At the same time, the level of detail is almost staggering. By reading this book, you will get a thorough education in history, politics, religion, psychology, economics, and sociology all rolled into one beautifully integrated package. And you will learn things that mainstream publishers, school teachers and university professors would not dare to tell you. My only criticism is that the author might consider publishing the book in two volumes rather than one. 1,200 pages is long for one volume, and you have to handle the book carefully to avoid damaging its spine.

Another meticulous, scholarly work by Dr. Jones. I think the quotes which best amplify the reality of "The Jewish Revolutionary Spirit" are on pages 40 and 41:"By rejecting Logos, which was simultaneously the person of Christ and the order in the universe, including the moral order, which sprang from the divine mind, the 'Jew' found himself drawn inexorably to revolution. ... The rejection of Christ was intimately bound up with the acceptance of Barabbas, the Zealot, i,e., choosing the revolutionary Jew over the suffering Christ."As a boy, among the first books I read were the Hardy Boys mysteries. I graduated from these to Agatha Christi novels. When I began watching TV, among the first shows I watched were detective shows like "Cannon", Barnaby Jones", and "The Rockford Files". This interest has continued over the years and so in the past quarter century I've watched shows like those in the various "Law & Order" series created by Dick Wolf. These shows have often portrayed the Catholic priest as an evildoer. Nuns, lay Catholics, Christians, and others wearing crosses around their necks have been depicted as hypocrites, committing the worst crimes. "Thugs of the Cross", I like to call them. With this in mind, I couldn't help when receiving Dr. Jones' book but go to the specifically cultural chapter in the book, chapter 31, "The Jewish Takeover of American Culture", PP. 959-986. Make no mistake about it, the movies, TV, and entertainment in general have been used as instruments of cultural change, as tools of propaganda forming those who think they're wise but are really just lemmings. Along these lines, I can't help but mention a passage about pornographer Al Goldstein on page 1024:"When Luke Ford asked Al Goldstein, the publisher of Screw, why so many Jews were involved in pornography, Goldstein got to the theological heart of the matter. 'The only reason that Jews are in pornography,' Goldstein responded, 'Is that we think that Christ sucks. Catholicism sucks."This quote of Goldstein's comes from chapter 32, "The Neoconservative Era". As I write this on February 9, 2016, voting in the New Hampshire presidential primaries has started. Donald Trump is expected to score a significant victory. Trump keeps saying that he said at the time, the War in Iraq was a terrible mistake. He also says the U.S. negotiates the worst trade deals and that he's going to get our jobs back from places like China and Mexico. Has the comeuppance of the neocons in the Republican Party started? I think it has. Time will tell. The Life issues, and particularly abortion, remain paramount to me. And so I highly recommend chapter 28, "Jews and Abortion", PP. 917-922. Abortionist Bernard Nathanson, who committed tend of thousands of abortions before converting to Catholicism, is mentioned in this chapter and on PP. 988, 989. What an incredible witness to the Divine Mercy, in this Holy Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis, the late Dr. Nathanson is. Incidentally, chapter 29 is entitled "The Black Panthers", PP. 923-942. A current controversy revolves around singer Beyoncé, a performer during last night's Super Bowl halftime show. Her backup dancers during her performance were dressed as members of the Black Panthers.I can't remember if it's in this book or in his excellent monthly, "Culture Wars", but Dr. Jones has said that while 9 out of 10 revolutionaries are Jewish, only 1 in 10 Jewish people are revolutionaries. And so, readers of this book must remember a quote from the Second Vatican Council's Nostra Aetate on page 38:"Even though the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ (cf. John 19:6), neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during his passion. It is true that the Church is the new people of God, yet the Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from the Holy Scripture."

It took me a long time to read this book because some of the things in it are so unbelievable that I had to stop reading in order to get some additional info. before I could go on. I was able to verify as factual everything I initially doubted. This book is a monumental work of love by an outstanding scholar that I found to be informative and enlightening.

Greatest Catholic mind of our time. I recommend all of his books.

I love the quality of the work and the book. The paper is great and one sided with a black back to help with bleed through. You get 2 of every image so you can color favorites again. I really appreciate the 🆓 PDF copy that comes with the purchase. You can print favorites over and over again so you can give as gifts, try many different color schemes and relax, relax, relax. The sayings are hilarious, this book in particular spoke to me through the phrases . Another great book by Jade Summer!

One of my favorite coloring books, Jade Summer really produces some great images. I love the sweary coloring books, and if you do as well you won’t be disappointed with this one. The phrases are great, they’re so entertaining. The background art varies enough, and is complex enough, that I don’t finish coloring a page in just a few minutes. It keeps me occupied for a good amount time, which is what I need to fully unwind.I myself rely heavily on reviews when it comes to deciding whether or not I’m going to purchase something, so my reviews are completely honest. If my opinion of the quality of this product changes, I will update my review accordingly. Please let me know if my review was helpful to you by voting yes below, and let me know if you have any questions!

I got this initially as part of a downloaded PDF at reduced cost but wanted the actual book so I ended up buying it. DO NOT REGRET IT AT ALL!!! I love the art, cuss words and everything about it. the back of each page has black so if the pages smear, they won't get on the back of the page OR leak through to the next drawing. I love that they have only one design on each page, not front and back. If you love to color the crap outta things like I do, why the hell are you still reading this? Go buy this now! Jade Summer you are a certified genius...

I was hesitant about buying it & finally did it!! GLAD I DID!! HILARIOUS!!Gonna enjoy every minute of this!!Anytime I find free time at work, on my authorized 10 minute breaks, & at lunch in the breakroom!! I'll be coloring gifts for my coworkers!! Heeheeheeheehee!!Very high quality book & paper, thick!! I highly recommend this book!!

If you buy this knowing what to expect, from seeing the pictures in the listing, you'll be pleased. Nice clear designs, black-backed pages so no bleed-through. Funny and fun.

I love this! I received this paper copy for a review and honest opinion. I have to say, I giggled the whole time looking through the book. It's a stress reliever, both the coloring AND the "colorful" language used in the pages.

The coloring book is nice and thick, the pages are going to be a blast to color. This is exactly what I wanted it to be. Not disappointed at all.

Love the pictures and the writing. The back of the pages are blacked out so you can use marker or crayon and not ruin the design on the side.

Neil Gaiman is always an author I've enjoyed more for his short stories than his novels, and this collection is a clear example of why. Some highlights from Trigger warnings include:Shadder: A short horror story that gets everything started, about a mysterious creature called the Shadder. The truth is a cave in the black mountains: One of the longest stories in the collection, this is the story about a dwarf on a mission and his guide, traveling to the titular cave.A Calendar of tales: A story made of even shorter stories, one for each month of the year. The case of Death and Honey: A Sherlock Holmes story, explaining what Holmes was doing in his retirement.Nothing O'Clock: A Doctor Who story about the good Doctor's confrontation with the Kin.The Sleeper and the Spindle: A reimagining of the tales of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.Happy reading!

“Trigger Warning” is a collection of 24 pieces of short fiction and poetry written by Neil Gaiman. If you know what a trigger warning is (I had to look it up) you may be thinking this collection is darker, edgier, and/or more risque than it really is. (For those who don’t want to look it up, a “trigger warning” is a blurb that intimates that a work has words or images that may induce a traumatic reaction.) However, these stories are Gaiman to the core, which means they are humorous, clever, and often quirky; but they are unlikely to throw one into catatonia or an apoplectic fit. The pieces include Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who stories, spin-offs from Sleeping Beauty and American Gods, as well as a few homages to other authors, including Ray Bradbury, Gene Wolfe, and William Blake.Without further ado, I’ll give a rundown of the included works:1.) “Making a Chair”: This is a poem about writer’s block.2.) “A Lunar Labyrinth”: An homage to Gene Wolfe’s work, “Solar Labyrinth.” This short story is about a maze that was destroyed, and that wasn’t to be walked on full moon nights.3.) “The Thing About Cassandra”: This is among my favorite stories in the collection. What happens when your friends and family start bumping into the girl who you made up as a girlfriend back in school?4.) “Down to a Sunless Sea”: This was written for a water-themed event. It’s about a person riding in a lifeboat down the Thames toward the sea.5.) “The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains”: This one was inspired by an island off Scotland called Skye, but the story is fantasy with magic elements. A man strikes out in search of revenge and closing, regarding a daughter who he thought had run away. This is one of the most engaging pieces in the collection.6.) “My Last Landlady”: This is a story, conveyed in poetic form, about a mean landlady.7.) “Adventure Story”: In the Introduction, Gaiman calls this a companion piece to his novella “The Ocean at the End of the Lane.” However, I didn’t make that connection, (and I’ve read that story.) At any rate, it’s a great story about an intriguing artifact left behind by a [deceased] father whose stories were always painfully dull. It’s told by a mother to a son who is incredulous that his, seemingly milquetoast, father lived through such a fascinating event.8.) “Orange”: Like several of the pieces in this book, this one is unconventional / experimental. However, it’s creative, and it works. It consists of answers to a questionnaire, from which the reader pieces together the story. One doesn’t have the questions, but most of them are fairly clear from the context of the answer.9.) “Calendar of Tales”: This is what it sounds like, 12 stories each matched to a month. It’s another of the unconventional and unusual pieces. Each story was spun from a tweet response to a question about a given month of the year.10.) “The Case of Death and Honey”: Few characters in the public domain have spurred as many offshoot stories as Sherlock Holmes, and this is Gaiman’s entry in the pool. Holmes’s interest in bee-keeping is central to the story.11.) “The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury”: An homage to Bradbury. If one forgets a person, did they ever exist?12.) “Jerusalem”: This work was influenced both by a poem by William Blake and a trip the author took to said city. The story is about a couple of tourists and the unique mental illness associated with this locale.13.) “Click-Clack the Rattlebag”: A scary bedtime story told by a child about a different kind of monster.14.) “An Invocation of Incuriosity”: A story about one of the strange and colorful people one might meet at a flea market.15.) “’And Weep, Like Alexander’”: A light-hearted story about an “un-inventor,” one who keeps you from having flying cars and all the other promised technology from sci-fi.16.) “Nothing O’Clock”: This is a “Doctor Who” story. It’s not necessary to be familiar with the series (necessary backstory is provided), but it could make it more appealing—i.e. the inside joke effect.17.) “Diamonds and Pearls: A Fairy Tale”: This is from “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?” Palmer is a cabaret-punk singer/songwriter and Gaiman’s wife, and the aforementioned booklet consists of a series of photos of Palmer looking deceased with brief stories to go along. This is one of the stories that could stand alone. It’s a fairy tale of the adults-only variety.18.) “The Return of the Thin White Duke”: Another fairy tale, this one about a Duke that strikes out on a quest for adventure in order to rescue a Queen who doesn’t need rescuing.19.) “Feminine Endings”: A story about a human statue—by that I mean one of those people who deck themselves out and stand on a box in the town square in touristy places in many parts of the world.20.) “Observing the Formalities”: A poem about one who doesn’t get invited.21.) “The Sleeper and the Spindle”: A take on the story of “Sleeping Beauty,” but from a different point of view.22.) “Witch Work”: This is another poem. I believe it’s the only one that’s not free verse. It’s about the life of a witch.23.) “In Relig Odhrain”: This is a true story about a saint, written in free verse.24.) “Black Dog”: This is a spin-off from the novel “American Gods” and it features that book’s protagonist, Shadow. You don’t need to have read that book, but you might have a greater affinity for the story if you have. It should also be noted that this is the one piece that is original to this collection, and it’s one of the most substantial pieces in the collection. i.e. it gives fans a reason to pick up the book even if they’ve read a lot of it from the original source.I enjoyed this book. Gaiman is a masterful story teller. Whether it’s one of conventional pieces based in established worlds (e.g. “Doctor Who” or that of Sherlock Holmes) or one of the off-the-wall, experimental pieces, these stories and poems are a pleasure to read.

I love this author. I know that anything he writes will be awesome, so I happily bought this book. And I wish I hadn’t. It was awful, painful, and a waste of time & money. There were a few actual stories that were good, my fave being the last one about Shadow. As for the other 95% of the book...I don’t know what I was reading. They definitely weren’t stories. More like a weird jumble of random unfinished thoughts. They made no sense, or very little sense. I had to force myself to keep reading this book. At least the last story was good. But after reading this, I would not buy any of his recent or new books in case they were like this. I’m very disappointed and sad.

Trigger Warnings is full of the creepy and the unsettling, but also full of rich characters. My favorite stories were "The Truth is a Cave in the Dark Mountains," a different kind of treasure seeking tale, "The Case of Death and Honey," where Sherlock tries to crack his hardest case, "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who story, "Diamonds and Pearls," a very contemporary fairy tale, "Feminine Endings," creepiest love letter ever, "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a perfect fairytale retelling, and "Black Dog," where Shadow encounters the surreal in a seemingly very normal town. Oddly, I'm not a huge American Gods fan, yet I loved the short story.Obviously, with so many favorites, this is an excellent collection. It could also be a great entry point for those unfamiliar with Neil Gaiman.Making a Chair: Poem comparing writing to making a chair. 2.5/5A Lunar Labyrinth: A traveler likes to visit bizarre sites, but may get more than he bargained for when he goes to a burned down lunar labyrinth. 3/5The Thing About Cassandra: An artist finds out that the girl he made up and drew as a teenager has been speaking to his friends and family. A reread. 4/5Down to a Sunless Sea: Flash fiction. And old woman walks in the rain, and there's a bone around her neck. A reread. 4/5"The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains...": A dwarf asks a farmer to show him the way to the cave in the mountains that holds gold, though gold that comes at a price. This one really hit me. 5/5My Last Landlady: A creepy poem. 4/5Adventure Story: Flash fiction about an adventure a mother won't talk about. Listened to a version of this first on NPR. 3.5/5Orange: Transcript from a teenager about her sister, and turning orange. Cute. I may have read this before. 4/5A Calendar of Tales: A tale for each month. Some are really great. Reread. 4/5The Case of Death and Honey: Sherlock's last case. 4.5/5The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury: The title says it all. 3.5/5Jerusalem: There's an illness that only hits in Jerusalem. Reread. 3.5/5Click-Clack the Rattlebag: Creepy little story. 4/5An Invocation of Incuriosity: A cabinet leads to other times. Reread. 4/5"And Weep, Like Alexander": An uninventor walks into a bar. 3/5Nothing O'clock: Doctor Who?!!!! 5/5Diamonds and Pearls: A Fairy Tale: Dark, modern fairy tale. 4.5/5The Return of the Thin White Duke: Can someone with ultimate power be happy? 3.5/5Feminine Endings: A super creepy love letter. A reread, but still creeped me out. 4.5/5Observing the Formalities: A poem about the fairy (or witch, or godmother, depends on the version) that wasn't invited to the christening. 3.5/5The Sleeper and the Spindle: Wonderful short story that turns the passive Snow White and Sleeping Beauty into not so passive agents in their own futures. 5/5Witch Work: A poem about a witch who keeps her life in a box and sells storms. 4/5In Relig Odhrain: A poem about a new saint of Iona. Rhythm stuck with me. 4/5Black Dog: Shadow from American Gods stops at a small town on his travels where he stays for a short time with a couple who are hiding something. Love the mix of magic and thriller. 4.5/5
