What I find most inspiring about this memoir is Ernestine Shepherd's honest and authentic account of herspiritual and emotional transformation, as she embarked upon her career as a body-builder in mid-life.Naturally, her athletic accomplishments are also motivating. The second part of the book contains a workout routine, nutritional advice, and motivating quotes that ES recommends.Yet, while some athletes write books -- from a position of invulnerability-- containing standard exercise and diet advice, Ernestine Shepherd writes about her life with a kind of vulnerability that touches me and shows me how changes in the body (i.e. fitness and athletic accomplishments) start in the spirit, heart, and soul.Openly and vividly she recounts her struggles with depression -- with with its agonizing symptoms -- caused by the loss of her sister Velvet, who was her soul mate and champion. She talks about God's interventions through dreams, music, relationships, and by the holy spirit, which brought her out of despair so that she began to love and trust the goodness of life again.I am quite moved not only by Ernestine Shepherd's stellar accomplishments but also by her honesty and her awe in the face of spiritual mysteries. Her tone and subject matter are not always serious, of course. The book can be fun and entertaining as ES recounts her adventures, and friendships, along the way to her athletic successes.I give this book 4 stars rather than 5 because there are some basic copyediting and proofreading mistakes in the text. In the Kindle version, furthermore, one page seems to be misplaced. The photographs do not come across well, either, in the Kindle format, which is a real loss for the reader.
Funny read! A very inspiring fitness story that, probably, a lot of baby boomers need and haven't or hardly see (because of the age of the author). It was relaxing to read and shows the process that made Ernestine so determined. Her attitude and spirituality are superb and to be emulated. This is by no means a weight-lifting manual but a beginner guide with some beginning exercises from an expert..
I have to say that this book was a pleasant surprise. I actually did read it cover to cover in basically one sitting. Ms. Shepherd is hilarious and a total inspiration for anyone looking to regain lost physical fitness. She is so open and down to earth that it inspires everyone to strive for the best that we can be. Age can no longer be an excuse. I absolutely recommend this book!!! If only there was a 6 star option....
Oh my gosh I woke up today feeling so hopeful. when I started reading Mrs. Shepherds book yesterday I could not stop til I got to the very end and usually I am very distracted when I read. She is such a real inspiration to both women and men approaching "old -er age" I was starting to feel so depressed about getting older and been struggling with all the changes in my own body and started to get into the mind set that life was pretty much over as I knew it but Mrs Shepherd true life story gave me hope. It's so much better than hearing in other books how as you age it becomes a struggle to lose weight and get fit. Mrs Shepherd and her advice in this book is something I will never forget and I believe everyone that reads her story will walk away with much more than before reading it. I shared this book with my husband this morning in hopes he can understand better how excited Iam and why I am carrying on about how I finally found a person who is a real inspiration rather than the women put in magazines and such who pretty much are not "real" . Mrs Shepherd earns her beauty inside and out and not buys it. Any woman over 50 will understand that.
Get up. Get moving. Get fit. Stay young. A prescription for joyous living. Through exercise, weight training, and faith, Ernestine shows us how to rise against depression, inertia, and the perceptions of aging. I can't wait to use her prescription!
A simple book, written from the heart. Common sense and a lot of hard work. Ernestine inspires me. I am 56 this year and know there is hope for me if I am willing to be determined, dedicated, and disciplined. Thank you, Ernestine.
I read this book in one sitting in the middle of the night while everyone slept. Ernestine's journey is a true inspiration. It is one of love, loss, ups, downs... But rising through it all to be the best that she could be for herself, her family and certainly for her sister. Keep doing what you do Ms. Ernestine. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Ernestine's journey to get herself fit is amazing, inspiring and thankfully because of the way she tells her story, achievable. I love her enthusiasm and candor as she tells the whole story of her life. She doesn't gloss over or sugar coat her past or her struggles. She's real and relatable. Age IS just a number. Time to get moving! Where's my running shoes?
