Our daughter loves rocks. Reading this book to her made her curious to examine her rocks and compare it to the nice charts provided at the end of the book. The illustration were bright and beautiful. It was easy for my daughter to follow along. Each page provided a fun fact on the bottom of the page and explained the uses of the rocks. Everyone can learn from this book. If your chOld loves collecting rocks the. I recommend this book for your Little Rock collector.

I'm a former teacher who wanted a simple, clear book for my grandson and granddaughter. They are really into rocks right now and this book had great illustrations and easy to understand explanations. The kids are 7 and 9.

I've searched through many K through 3 grade books that introduce rock formation to children. This by far is the best book. Younger children will need to have this book read to them, but the explanations are simple and easy to understand. Experienced readers will be able to read this independently and understand the concepts that are introduced. Give this book and some rocks to any kid. They are sure to be excited!

Not what I was expecting, but I have high expectations for my "science" books. My four-year-old has never shown an interest in this book, but loves his Audubon Society Guide to Rocks and Minerals.

Just reading about the success of author Adachi's previous titles alone made me pick up this first volume. This is the first of his works I've read, but so far I'm willing to give this series a chance.Without giving away the main spoiler in this 3-volume-in-1 release, the story revolves around a young boy, Ko. The first volume covered in this release is more of a backstory on his childhood, floating between his father's sporting goods store and his neighbor's coffee house. Readers are immediately introduced to his love interest in Waka, his neighbor and second oldest of four girls. Waka's interactions with Ko alone are enough to establish that they're gonna be the main pairing you're expecting while reading, but to bring it on home, you also find that they're born on the same day. It'd be cheesy in any other instance, but Adachi makes it work just well enough for readers to tolerate it.... but you'd be wrong to assume this manga is a full-on romance. As suggested by its genre alone (most shonen manga rarely delve that deeply when it comes to romance) its primary focus isn't on the possible couplings throughout the story, but moreso on the action, which in this case is baseball. The latter two volumes covered in this release are different from the first in that focus is less on the romance (which was only done in the first volume more to establish characters than the full story itself) and more on baseball--which will either make or break it when it comes to whether you should buy the release or not.Having read this 3-in-1 release, the overall tone of the series tends to that of your typical sports manga with the smallest doses of romance and suggestiveness (in the chapter title pages alone!) expected from your typical sports manga. Regardless, there's just enough charm for me to continue with the series.

Loved the manga and love the anime. It's touched on several aspects of people's lives. What it's like to loose someone and what happens when destiny lands a hand.

I read this manga quite a while ago. It is one of my favorites. So now I have bought the kindle version of it. I even liked the anime.

I love the series and I wish H2, Touch, Rough, Katsu, Mix and all of Adachi's works were brought over.

The artwork is classic, the story is engaging (if not a little melancholy). This is a manga for baseball fans, along with shoujo and shonen manga fans. Enjoy!

Much of the kudos and complaints from previous reviews, I agree with.I just wanted to add that the writer clearly was coming from a US military mindset, and his writing contained a number of obvious examples of this. For example: what place does a leader of the Russian Orthodox church being in the KGB have in a book about Byzantine military strategy? Especially as this book was written well after the fall of the Soviet Union? For that matter, where is the equal mention of the Catholic Church and its making so many CIA members Knights of Malta? Malta is at least the same geographical area as the Byzantines once held sway over.I'd also like to add some clarity on the previous comments on the relative scholarship and intended audience of this book. When dealing with ancient documents (and thus ancient languages), the outcome of translations is subject to large degrees of interpretation. As such it is normally common practice to refer to the original text so that either common ground or sources of disparity can be easily seen. In nearly every case in this book, the translations are assumed to be unitary and consistent when even in the book there are notes that this is not a safe presumption.I also agree that this book is a thinly veiled means to criticize extant US national security policy.I do note a number of positives: there is a much more nuanced overview of Islam as well as early Christian history (Monophysites/Council of Chalcedon) than is commonly seen, though the former is diluted by what appears to be a blurring at times between modern and proto-Islam.The book also does a fair job of distinguishing the actual makeup of historical "Huns" and what not vs. what the likely actual composition was.A last note is that there is the merest beginnings of a look at the economic underpinning behind military strategy - unfortunately this is largely ignored outside of where a couple of points are intended to be made (i.e. heavy taxation + religious oppression = Egypt and Syria going Muslim rapidly). What numbers are presented are not very useful due to a complete lack of context - what use is knowing how much tax in gold was owed if there is no idea on the average income in gold?All in all, the book was clearly written for armchair military strategists and intelligence operatives with a side bar of US military fans, despite its many criticisms of ancient works by armchair military strategists.

Edward Luttwak has devoted much of his career to the analysis of the concepts of strategy especially what is called `grand strategy'. In this book he has attempted to distill the basics of the grand strategy used by the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire to out last the Western Roman Empire by almost 1000 years. Since grand strategy is a modern concept, Luttwak had to analyze the history of the Byzantine Empire and infer the strategic designs that it followed from relevant historical evidence, including events, fragmentary comments, and official writings. All in all, he has done a pretty good job of it.Constantinople (Istanbul) was at the center of Byzantine strategy since for much of its history it was the most prosperous and populous city in Western Christendom. Its unique location made it highly defendable and indeed until it was successfully captured in the Fourth Crusade (1204) it was the anchor of the Empire. The Byzantines used the magnificence and wealth of the city as well as the carefully staged extreme opulence and ritual of the imperial court to overawe enemies and allies alike. Operating from this nearly impregnable bastion, successive Emperors and their bureaucracies were able to employ a complex mixture of intelligence information, bribery, diplomatic maneuvering including duplicity, and military force to thwart all imperial enemies even in the face of much stronger military forces. Perhaps their greatest enemy was the high cost of their strategy for in spite of a very effective system of taxes Byzantium was very near to bankruptcy several times in its history.Since the very survival of the Empire was at stake, the Byzantines studied and analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of their potential enemies in a very modern and effective manner. Their military forces evolved over the years, but until the last 200 years before the destruction of the empire, always included a strong navy and an army consisting of a core of well trained native troops supplemented by large contingents of mercenaries. After the Emperor Justinian (ce 6th Century) the empire was largely on the defensive. As Luttwak explains in considerable detail the Byzantines developed a strategy that enabled them to defend and maintain the empire against a variety enemies bent on its destruction. This is an interesting and well researched book

Extremely informative if you don't already study the field, but rambly, and jumps around different time periods rather than proceeding linearly. Its most important feature is that it presents the interesting parts of all the many Byzantine military texts while filtering out the redundant parts. I ended up with dozens of highlight notes. The kindle edition has many typos and minor formatting errors which suggests they accidentally uploaded the second-to-last version. The text includes both facts and the author's opinions but it's straightforward to tell them apart. There are a few passive-aggressive notes from the author arguing with ancient sources which is actually kind of funny.

Edward Luttwak has written has written a superb geopolitical history of the Byzantine Empire that provides a sound historical basis for events occurring in Europe and Asia today. It's scope and insights make it far harder to put down than it's title would suggest. This is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the background of current events in Southeastern Europe and the Near and Middle East. More importantly, in describing the methods which the Byzantine Emperors used to maintain their Empire for nearly a thousand years, it provides useful insights supporting current policy formulation.

I normally get my Kindle First reviews posted much sooner, since I know how excited I am, and many are, to make their KF selection for the month. I'm a bit later this time around, and there are already some wonderful reviews for this book, so I'll just say that I echo them! When I started looking through the selections early this morning, I wasn't very happy with any of them. I have never chosen a thriller, so that one was out. The book about the Unkillable Kitty O'Kane didn't interest me enough to even get the sample chapters. I considered the Moth book (sorry, I don't remember the title), and did get the sample chapters, but they didn't impress me...Which I have to admit was the same for this book. I read the sample chapters of this book 3 times before finally deciding, reluctantly, to make it my month's selection.I wasn't expecting too much, and though it didn't really grip me until about 20% in, it turned out to be an utterly delightful read. Such a beautiful story. There weren't a lot of moments that really burned in my mind, but the book as a whole is wonderful. There is absolutely no language or sex, and while several other KF selections in the past have enchanted me somewhat more, there was nothing in this book that made me want to knock off a star. I'd definitely recommend it as a solid choice for readers of historical fiction.

4.5 starsThe Silver Music Box is one of the best Kindle First books I have read. I started it this morning when I had a little free time and couldn’t put it down until I had finished it. The book is beautifully written – it was originally written in German and then translated into English so occasionally a turn of phrase or expression is a little unusual but that didn’t impact the story one bit. The tale starts out slowly but really picks up about a third of the way in.The silver music box is at the heart of the tale. As the book opens in 1914, Johann Blumenthal creates an ornate silver music box for his son Paul so that Paul will remember his father while Johann goes off to fight for Germany in World War 1. The story continues through the decades until the mid-1960’s following Paul and his family members and close friends with the silver music box remaining the thread that ties them all together. At times uplifting and at other times heartbreaking, the story sucked me in until I made it to the very last page.My favorite part of the book was Lilian’s story, and the path she is lead down when her adoptive parents die. Have tissues handy!! I also liked that a list of characters is included at the front of the book; it is very helpful because there are a lot of people in the book. I also enjoyed the Author’s Note at the end where she discusses her exhaustive research and the facts she altered a bit for the purpose of maintaining the flow of the book. I was happy to learn that one of my favorite characters, August Konrad, was based on a real person – what a pleasant surprise!The Silver Music Box is a wonderful and heartrending tale that will stay with me for a long time.

This is the best Kindle First book that I have read in a long time. The story is exquisite, the words just flow. Love the characters, it follows the family for several decades.I have always loved family sagas, this one is wonderful. Highly recommend.

The past several months I have bypassed all the Kindle First selections as they held no interest for me. The only book to appeal to me this month was The Silver Music Box. My interest was piqued by the sample chapter and the entire rest of the story did not dissapoint. This is one of those 'cannot put it down' books that will stay with me for a long time.The writing is like a fine wine - it goes down so smoothly. The story of the Blumenthalls was captivating and, while fiction, paints a poignant picture of a terrible period in history. The author does an excellent job of bringing every character in the book, and there are several, to life. I highly recommend The Silver Music Box. As another reviewer mentioned, have several tissues close at hand.

Before setting off to fight for his country of Germany in World War 1, Johann Blumenthal gives his son Paul a beautiful music box. Paul treasures this item as he grows into a young man who runs the jewelry store his family has owned for years. But because the Blumenthal family is Jewish, the family business and their lives will be changed forever as the Nazis come into power. This is a story of what people are willing to sacrifice in the name of love and their dreams.This was an incredible historical fiction novel. I have read many books taking place right up to and during World War 2 but was not very familiar with role of Jewish soldiers fighting for Germany in World War 1. I thought the story of Paul and Clara was fascinating and what they were willing to do in order to fulfill Clara's dream. I loved the role of the music box in the story and how it spanned generations. Knowing how history played out it made for tense reading at times but in my opinion it is a book well worth reading because it accurately shows the tough decisions people had to make during that time period. I definitely recommend to anyone who has an interest in historical fiction.

The persecution of Jews seems to begin slowly, and most cannot fathom what is to come. Some emigrate, and some remain committed to the land they call home. The story eventually focuses on Paul and Clara Blumenthal and their desperate attempt to flee with their young daughter. Then comes a rather jarring transition to 1960's London, where we meet a young lady who was sent to England on a Kindertransport, and follow her search for her birth family. Of course it all meshes, sometimes too easily. This novel was originally written in German, and I think some of the emotional connection may have been lost in translation

Although I respect some who have endorsed this book, and the intent of the author was probably good, I could not more strongly advise not to use this guide to Christian prophetic insight. It is simply steeped in occult definitions, and while there is much mention of the bible and some accurate interpretations, I discovered within just a few pages that it neglects scripture more than consults it. There is enough truth to make someone believe it is all accurate and I feel this book severely misleads people into some very dangerous areas. There is a significant imbalance between what God says things mean and what things mean in ancient mythology, sorcery, magic, etc. It's also very disturbing that the author knows more about pagan terminology than biblical symbology. I have studied biblical symbology for 12 years, interpreted over 40,000 dreams - also wrote a book on it and teach on the prophetic. My advice is a strong STAY AWAY. We don't study the false to understand the real. We do not have to study paganism to understand God's perspective on symbolic meanings.

I was very excited when I flipped through this book in my local Christian bookstore. I am a pastor and seminary professor and always looking to find good background information on the Bible. When I got this book, I was shocked at all the craziness within the pages!!This book is filled with errors.For example, under the section of "NIMROD" the author states; "Truly, this was a man prepared for the call on his life, which was to supply the children of Adam from Cain's lineage with an alternative culture and religion..."Nimrod lived after the flood. The entire lineage of Cain ALL DIED IN THE FLOOD!! Only Noah and his wife and kids survived. This is basic Bible 101.This is only one example of the errors in this book and there are hundreds!!She states that MELCHIZEDEK was "the priest of all creation, he officiated at the only Creator altar on the planet to propitiate the damage done by Lucifer's rebellion and the subsequent demonic host evicted from heaven to terrorize the earth."She states that Daniel was a prophet and the CHIEF OF THE MAGI in Babylon!She states that Jehovah stopped the use of CAVES OF DIVINATION because people were worshipping other gods beside Him.She states that Adam reigned over the earth for 70 years after his exile from Eden, then was dethroned by the serpent. I was asked to teach a class on prophecy, so I bought several books to help with my studies. This was a well written book that provided other perspectives to assist me with teaching. The author knows the subject and did a fine job of imparting the knowledge and experiences of his life path.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, but so far it has not been helpful because everything I look up seems to give me the occult meanings and history instead possible biblical meanings. I can appreciate the research that went into the book, but I would have preferred a more positive approach and help in interpreting my dreams and visions - I have no occult/witchcraft background, so this book doesn't apply to me. Maybe it will in the future if I start interpreting other people's dreams who have that kind of background.

I purchased this book a few months ago and it has helped me maybe once. I don't like it at all. There has to be a better resource out there. It doesn't have as many basic words as I thought it would. Plus the explanations don't really tell me anything to decipher my dreams. Wish I could return it, because I would!

It's a great resource for those who are just starting to walk in their prophetic gift, it has so much information to help you understand all aspects of the Prophet anointing. Apostle Dr Matthew Stevenson suggested this book to us and he is a Chief Prophet and I learned from this book exactly what that meant.

This book is so detailed. I thought it was going to be a little pocket dictionary with a few words and definitions and explanations but was I wrong! This book is thick and it has every definition of every word that relates to the prophetic including people, places, and times of events.

This is probably my favorite dream/vision book. Besides being helpful with prophetic dreams, it's just plain good information about many different terms that we come across as ministers.

I am a private piano teacher and mom and love the Alfred series. I have used it for years and love the huge variety of fun, classical, spiritual, etc. that it offers. There is something for everyone!

I have been a pianist for the last 25 years, and my 5 year old daughter decided she wanted to learn. We don't have any instructors in our city, so I decided I could teach her in the beginning. I remembered using the Alfred books when I began lessons, so I was happy to see they were still in print! I ordered the Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book, Theory, and Technic (Level 1). They are meant to go together.The books are well laid out and simple for a child to follow. My 5 year old is an early reader, and with me, she has no problem following these books. They are illustrated and the print is large.The books will let you know when to incorporate the lessons from the Theory and Technic books, as the lessons taught will coincide and help build on each other.In the beginning, your child will learn the basics on reading music, but for the first half of the books, a numbered finger system will be used in place of a traditional staff. This is to build your child's ability to use their separate fingers correctly.If you are using this as a parent to teach your own child, my only advice is to go slowly and patiently. Make sure that the child understands and is using the correct technic before moving ahead. It is a simple book, but speed is not key. This takes time and practice in order to build confidence.This is the perfect first lesson book.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for 15 years and I am delighted with the Alfred series. This book specifically has quite a few songs that the kids will recognize. It starts by introducing the dotted quarter not, which is often difficult for students. It ends with great coverage of the primary chords, I, IV, V7. I love the approach Alfred takes to introducing those chords, then using them so much for the accompaniment. At first the kids are always very confused by it, but by the end of the book, they recognize them easily in all their pieces and can name them without any trouble. Be aware that some of the supplements in the series are substantially harder than the corresponding lesson book.

The Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course book is the perfect addition for any new piano player. These basic piano teaching books are easy to follow, easy to read, and easy to teach. The pages are filled with a good use of white space. The book itself is made of good quality and I do not feel that they will easily deteriorate. I believe that these books by Alfred's Basic Piano Prep are the basic books for piano knowledge and a great place to start a beginner. I have already purchased other of the Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course books and will continue to purchase from this publisher. I have also steered my student's toward purchasing their own sets of these books to help with practicing outside of the classroom setting. These books will definitely stay around in my teaching library for years to come!! I look forward to seeing what other prep books are written and how they supplement the current books!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

This product arrived within a few days of ordering. It was in pristine condition. I use this set of books because they are what my piano teacher prefers to teach from. Although the book says for later beginners, it should be a bit more specific. It is definitely not designed for adult learners (the songs are geared more toward children or adolescents). I do not mind so much, but others might. All in all a great buy. I recommend the seller. Delivered as promised and had a very accurate description of product. I am very pleased.

I have more than a full collection of Christmas piano books for my students. I have one young student who is currently in the Alfred B lesson book. It sticks mostly to the C position and does not introduce the Middle C position. I purchased this book specifically for her to have songs in her usual position. Turns out this book is completely in the Middle C position. I'll probably keep it because it has teacher duets, but I'd still recommend the Bastien Christmas books over this series. The layout is cleaner and the pictures are more enticing.
