The Jihad Next Door: The Lackawanna Six and Rough Justice in an Age of Terror

From Booklist

The Lackawanna Six, Yemeni American friends living in straitened circumstances outside Buffalo, New York, accepted Kamel Derwish as their mentor in the hope of becoming better Muslims, unaware of his involvement in the attack on the USS Cole and his role as an al-Qaeda recruiter. Temple-Raston, National Public Radio's FBI correspondent and a superbly gifted author, describes with a journalist's urgency and a novelist's sensibility Lackawanna's close-knit Yemeni community; the fateful journey of the six friends to Yemen, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; their frightening experiences at an al-Qaeda training camp; and the political frenzy surrounding their high-profile prosecution. As she sensitively portrays each of the five men currently behind bars, she reveals their dire naïveté and profound regrets, which stand in stark contrast to her revelations regarding the Bush administration's use of the Lackawanna case to bolster the Patriot Act and to justify the assassination of Derwish, an American citizen. Compelling and clarifying, Temple-Raston's invaluable exposé will stand as one illuminated chapter in a dark saga of governmental crimes and cover-ups. Seaman, Donna

I found this book to be a valuable resource on the Lackawanna 6 and homegrown terrorism in general. Temple-Raston went to great lengths to tell this story in a reliable and factual way. I felt that her writing was very objective - she was not overly sympathetic, nor did she make the Lackawanna 6 out to be monsters. Her careful citations of facts were appreciated. With that being said, this was not a dry read like so many books that get bogged down by the facts and citations. The writing and storytelling was immaculate - I could not put this book down and kept wanting to know more. A must-read for anyone wanting to understand the phenomenon of homegrown terrorism.

My overall evaluation of this book is stated in the title of this review. The author doesn't develop one theme throughout this book, but jumps around between several different themes. Worse, some of these themes have merit and some don't. Some examples:Theme 1: The Yemenite community in Lackawanna was typical of an ethnic/immigrant community anywhere in America in the past 100 years until this incident and its fallout. - One wishes this were true, but apparently it isn't, and Temple-Raston herself can't help but note things like this community's general celebration of the attack on the U.S. Cole (p.30), their insularity, the susceptibility of their youth to religious radicals, and their celebration of the escape of one of the "6" [really 9] from Yemenite authorities. Comparing this with the "illegal" Mexican-American community where I live, I don't see any similarity at all. My Mexican-American neighbors are rabidly pro-American [curiously, even when being chased by Homeland Security] and would like nothing better than for the U.S. model to be emulated everywhere.Theme 2: The 6 [or 9] were just young alienated youth who really weren't at all interested in terrorism, but just wanted "to belong" and reaffirm their ethnic identity. They were misled into going to the Al Queda camps under the guise that they would be training to fight Russians and Serbs, not Americans. It was "an adventure" for the 9, not a serious taking up of arms. - The author adduces some evidence for this theme, but then, again, notes facts like the Lackawanna youth who ended up staying in the Middle East clearly declared to his fellows that he wanted to be a martyr and die for the cause. [One wonders why things were so clear to this young man but purportedly weren't at all clear to the other 8.] By the time that most of these youth had declared that the life of a Jihad warrior wasn't for them, it had been made clear to all 9 [if it wasn't crystal clear before - and it should have been crystal clear before] that the enemy was the U.S. and Israel, not the Russians and the Serbs. But was that their motivation for leaving the camp, or was their motivation that they didn't REALLY want to dedicate their lives and future to a cause, even the cause of "defending" fellow Muslims? The author doesn't seem to really know.Theme 3: America is turning into a police state and giving up basic civil liberties gained from hundreds of years of struggle against tyranny. - This is the theme the author should have been emphasizing to start with and returning to throughout the book, yet she doesn't really get around to it until Chapter 14. The simple fact of the matter is that, although the 6 [or 9] may not have been, and may not be, very good Americans, they would not have been criminals under our laws of 50 years ago. They didn't actually DO anything to harm other Americans or their property. They would have had the same standing under previous American law as those people who were members of the German American Bund [or Henry Ford] before WWII [disgusting people, but not people we want littering our jails for their stupid views] But somehow the author seems "fuzzy" about this very basic point until nearly the end of her book.So my evaluation is simple: Buy this book if you want somewhat disjointed sketches of the lives and some of the surroundings of the 6, with little more. Don't buy it if you are looking for a case study of this incident to accompany the many fine more theoretical studies of the loss of our civil liberties. You might borrow it from a friend and read Chapter 14, but if you are a civil libertarian there is not a lot more in the book to interest you.

This book is a good "read". It covers this story well. I grew up not far from where these young men grew up. Attended a high school like these men did. There were a lot of similarities. I should have read it years ago but I "thought" I knew the "story". Honestly, these guys could be me ... or my old high school friends or just some kids in Any High School USA. The trouble they got themselves into ... Honestly, I have no idea how they survived their trip to Pakistan and then to Afghanistan and bin Laden's "training camp". They could have died and their parents would not have known their fate. Then there was the trip back to Buffalo. How they got out of this camp ... this should be a movie. Average to above average kids, friends off at 18 years old ... "eh, what did we just do" must resound in their head every day. Perhaps they were gullible but how gullible can an 18 year old boy be ... or should I say an 18 year old man. For me I was 18 once ... had admissions to 2 very good local universities there, Alternate to a military academy, enlisted in 2 separate military forces ... eh, what was I thinking ? I hope these guys come out "the other end" and enjoy the days they have left.

The Boy from Nine Miles: The Early Life of Bob Marley (Young Spirit Books), by Cedella Marley Gerald Hausman

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-4-A brief account of the musician's childhood in Jamaica, cowritten by his daughter. The two chapters cover the first five years of Marley's life with his mother and grandparents in Nine Miles, and a year he spent in Kingston. The book is full of conversations and descriptions of the young boy's thoughts and feelings as the father he has never known arrives and takes him to be educated in the city, and the writing is at times amateurish. An afterword sketches Marley's career. Framed full- and double-page illustrations in vibrant colors appear throughout. Unfortunately, they fall short of the folk quality to which they clearly aspire. While some young readers may be interested in Marley's life and music, the narrow focus of this book limits its appeal and usefulness.Tim Wadham, Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, AZCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my grandson, who loves Bob Marley. It was a very nice story and my grandson enjoyed reading about Bob when he was a child.

My son is doing a bio bash at school and chose Bob Marley. He's only in the fifth grade so we didn't want him reading too much about him.I myself didn't read the book - but he enjoyed it and is looking forward to doing a presentation and report on it.

GREAT

What a nice present for an 8 year old boy who wanted books for his present!!!

GREAT BOOK WITH GREAT ART AND UNKNOWN INFO ON THE YOUNG LIFE OF BOB MARLEY. VERY TOUCHING AND MYSTICAL

I have read this book to my middle school ESE classes for the past three school years (present year included). Year after year, class after class, it has enchanted and enthralled each and every child. They cry. Mind you, these are not your average students. My students come from extremely harsh environments and many of them have criminal histories. They are the so-called 'tough guys' of the school. Yet still, they cry. Every last one of them

I have seen this book reviewed in various media. The Ruminator, for example, calls it "...an intriguing biography...successfully captures a child's point of view...Rich rhythmic language, rife with biblical imagery, conjures the young Nesta's idyllic farm life with his beloved Mumma and grandfather...bordered ink and colored pencil illustrations help readers imagine both rural urban life on this small island in the 1950s." This last is not surprising since the illustrator, Mariah Fox, lived in Jamaica for thirteen summers and is the mother of three Jamaican children. Her work in the book complements Cedella Marley's soft, well-intentioned prose.

This book continues to amaze me -- no matter how many times I read it. I also have shared the novel with many friends and family as gifts. The story of Bob Marley's childhood is revealed truthfully and vividly through beautiful illustrations by Mariah Fox and a wonderful collaboration by daughter Cedella Marley and seasoned author Gerald Hausman. The message of this book rings as clear and soulful as Bob Marley's own songs. Adults and children alike can share in this experience and journey of a child - it's a fantastic learning tool especially for kids and the subject matter is sure to keep them interested. Highly Recommended.

UPDATE: After broken item received amazon sent another book for free. It really deserves 5 stars because is a great product, good quality (I cannot understand how the first one could arrive damaged). The kids loved it. I recommend it.

My seven year old daughter received this as a gift and she adores it. There are opportunities to color on every page, but I would estimate that about half the pages involve an activity. There are mazes, word puzzles, drawing prompts, and matching games to name a few. If you are only looking for coloring pages, this is probably not the book for you.The included stickers are very nice, and about a 50/50 mix of characters and colored snowflakes. The images for coloring are highly detailed, and might be frustrating for younger children. This book is best suited to users with colored pencils.

I bought this Frozen coloring book for my granddaughter's birthday since she loves the movie. This coloring book is thick and has a lot of activity pages in it, but most of them can be colored as well. There is one page in the front of the book that has stickers that include snowflakes and the main Frozen characters. There are a lot of details on the pages so I would recommend using a mix of crayons and colored pencils to color in this book. The activities in the book include mazes, find the difference, word search, counting items, drawing and more. There is a story line on the top of the coloring pages that goes along with the movie. If you are looking for an activity/coloring book then I would recommend this book, but if you are looking for just a coloring book then I would recommend to keep looking.

I have a four year daughter who is a huge fan of the movie "Frozen" and when this arrived in the mail last week, she sat down for two straight hours, completely consumed. She loves coloring in the pictures and has asked me to help her with some of the more advanced activities like the mazes or letter games. I have been thoroughly impressed with this book's ability to inspire her concentration and imagination and since she can sit still with it for long periods of time it has also freed me up to do other things while she's occupied. Most of the activities are too advanced for a young child to read or do on their own, but she recognizes all of the scenes from the movie and loves putting her own touches into the illustrations. I highly recommend it for the price and it will be a coloring book that's filled in from cover to cover for little enthusiasts of the film.

My 2 1/2 year old twins love Frozen and they enjoy coloring (okay, scribbling) so I bought this coloring and activity book for them. The coloring book is great because the coloring pages and activities follow the Frozen story all the way through the book. Each page has a sentence or two about what is going on in the picture or what kids need to do for the activity. I love that the pages are perforated so I can just tear out a couple of pages and hand them to my kids so they don't fight over who gets to use the coloring book. There is also a full page of stickers included in the book. My kids are still too young to fully enjoy the fun of a coloring and activity book but they love it and are so happy when they color so that makes me a very happy mommy! The price was excellent and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a Frozen fan!

Well I would have given it 5 stars but the book is mainly full with activities.. Take note that if you are trying to buy this for a young child.. Don't.. Its highly detailed note the photos.. Also the stickers were not qworth it..most of them are snow flakes! I would have liked to see more different kinds!.. The package did arrive a day early (surprised!!) And packaged really neatly and nicely! Will be ordering one for myself! And the Ariel one!

This is lovely. The Pictures are lovely and beautiful I'm almost wishing for a 2D version of the movie in this art style. Also Elsa crown or tiara whatever one may call it, look kinda like, she wearing cute little ears. The package got here right on the schedule date of delivery. there was a few bent corner but that was fine for me. Overall I'm happily okay with my coloring book my cat okay with it too. I might get this book for more older kid rather then a younger one althoughI upload a pic of Elsa really the crown look like cute little ears :)

My daughter loves to color, and she also loves Frozen (probably like 95% of little girls). This perfectly fit-the-bill for me and my daughter. Not only is it fairly priced, but it has a very large quantity of pages to color. Actually, I bought one of these for her about one year ago and she completely filled the pages. I forgot that I had purchased it, and bought another one about one month ago. She noticed that they were the same right away, but she told me that she didn't care and she was really excited to color it again. So it worked out for me.For the price and the quality, I don' think you can go wrong.

Review

“What makes R.J.B Bosworth’s new book so captivating is not just the picture he paints of their affair, based on diaries, letters and police reports, but also the light he throws on the corrupt, greedy, scheming world of the Fascist leadership… Bosworth, the author of some twenty books on the Mussolini years, is one of the finest historians of modern Italy, and his deep knowledge and understanding, as well as his formidable research, inform every page of this enjoyable biography.”—Caroline Moorhead, Literary Review, 10th February 2017. (Caroline Moorhead Literary Review 2017-02-10)“Readers are fortunate that the Australian-born historian is the first English-language specialist to make extensive use of this material… He writes with erudition, perceptiveness and humour about Claretta and Mussolini — she called him Ben, and he called her Clara —and about the light cast by their affair on the dictator’s personality, his style of rule and Italian social conditions during his 1922-43 spell as national leader.”—Tony Barber, Financial Times (Tony Barber Financial Times 2017-02-18)“That fateful first encounter and the passionate, but doomed affair that followed between Claretta and her ‘Ben’ is detailed in a riveting new biography of Petacci by historian Richard Bosworth.”—Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail (Christopher Stevens Daily Mail 2017-02-25)“Most of the world – as Richard Bosworth points out at the start of this scrupulously forensic examination of a woman for whom his own sympathy is discreetly scant – has forgotten about Claretta Petacci… Xenophobic, anti-Semitic, ruthless, amoral and idle, she is fortunate to have fallen into the hands of a calm, kind and fair-minded biographer, one who balances Petacci’s vices against the fact that her life ended with humiliation, hardship and a shameful death.”—Miranda Seymour, Daily Telegraph (Miranda Seymour Daily Telegraph 2017-02-25)“Bosworth ably demonstrates how histories of amorous adventurism can be used to explore central themes of modern political history to great effect.”—Neil Gregor, THES (Neil Gregor THES 2017-03-03)“Claretta: Mussolini’s Last Lover is a book that casts a new light on Mussolini as a failed leader. For readers interested in World War II and the path upon which its leaders trod, this is informative and interesting.”—New York Journal of Books (New York Journal of Books)“Gripping and scholarly”—Bee Wilson, London Review of Books, 16 March 2017. (Bee Willson London Review of Books 2017-03-16)“RJB Bosworth draws on rarely consulted papers that Petacci kept of their nine-year relationship. One of the finest historians of modern Italy, Bosworth has written both a love story, full of passion and jealousy, and a vivid portrait of Italy under a man who dreamt of recreating the Roman empire . . . Claretta is an extremely enjoyable read.”—Caroline Moorehead, Financial Times (Caroline Moorhead Financial Times 2017-06-23)“A worthy companion to Bosworth’s previous biography of Mussolini, this study is more Borgia than bunga bunga, an illuminating history of a folie a deux which could have been sub-titled ‘Fifty Shades of Fascism’.”—Robert Carver, The Tablet (Robert Carver The Tablet 2017-07-08)

Very personal insights into the life of Claretta Petacci, Mussolini and both of their families based on her diary and letters. Great book!

Fabulous story good book

Greatly enjoyed this book!A quick read for anyone interested in this period of 20th century Italian history.

Not much has been available, at least in the US and in English about Clara Petacci. I found the book very well written and informative.

A bit of history not well known.

The Last Lover of Mussolini: Claretta Petacci and Her World by R.J.B. Bosworth is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late December.Despite being one of several women in Benito Mussolini's life, she is likely the most impassioned, had admired him her entire life, and offered up the greatest amount of detail about both herself and her 'Great Lion.' The most eye-opening fact that I learned from this book is, had his first wife not gotten pregnant with his first child, his dream was to emigrate to the U.S. (which would've affected the landscape of world history and Fascist politics).
